A word from Sorrel Urban Bistro
Born out of a vision to bring affordable farm-to-table dining to Houston, restaurateur Ray Salti created Sorrel Urban Bistro, a casually elegant and fresh design, featuring an ever-changing blackboard menu of organic, locally-grown cuisine. Sorrel represents Ray Salti's second fine-dining culinary endeavor in addition to Ray’s Grill, the highly-lauded farm-to-table concept in Fulshear, TX, 20 miles West of Houston.

In addition to a diverse menu selection featuring local organic produce, meat, sustainable fish, and wild game, Sorrel now offers a charcuterie bar with a wide variety of imported and housemade delicatessen along with artisan Texas cheeses, handcrafted breads and more.

Beverage service includes seasonally inspired cocktails, artisanal beers and diverse selection of 200 plus wines (25 percent organic.)

  • "I'm not suprised this place is closing in a few months. I'd been here once before and enjoyed my meal. This past time I brought a group and to say the least the experience was underwhelming. Three of us ordered the bass with a Pumpkin sauce. It was mediocre for $28 I wish I'd had just ordered the burger. I love the concept of local sourced foods. But I will not be coming back. Houston has a lot more to offer foodie wise! Service was good though."

Ambience was great, location was great, and there was more than sufficient parking the time I went. The only thing I would ask to be changed is that they offer fresh-squeezed orange juice. I felt it was a bit odd for a farm-to-table concept restaurant not to have fresh-squeezed orange juice, particularly for brunch."

The layered tastes in each dish are a foodies delight. My wife and I have frequented Sorrel's for the last two years and are soon to host 8 friends to a food and wine pairing dinner. The owner Ray and manager Ernesto, are consummate hosts. The menu keeps changing to reflect daily purchases from farms and the Gulf. If you see the fig cheese cake on the menu, order two. One to eat in the moment and the other to take home."

  • "The kitchen SO knows what it's doing at this place. We had the roasted goat risotto for an appetizer. It was delicious because--of all things--the great acid balance achieved in the dish. The main courses were even more impressive--the blackening seasoning on the (perfectly cooked) snapper and the dehydrated/grilled beets with acorn squash purée that accompanied the petit filet were amazing. My boyfriend generally hates both bread pudding and anything with sour cream in it, so it's a tribute to the kitchen that every bite of the bread pudding with banana-sour cream ice cream was devoured (the spicy crumb garnish that accompanies it makes the dish). Terrific wine list--we drank a Malbec from the Maule region of Chile. What a great evening!"

  • "My wife and I dined at Sorrel earlier this summer and had a great time with friends. The ambiance is very nice, and the noise level is moderate (OK for conversations). I needed to try their pastrami-topped burger, so we went back for another visit. My wife's vegetarian noodle dish was very heavily salted, even after asking for low-salt/low-oil. The burger was good, but I know Houston chef Ziggy Gruber has purchased this space for his new Dubrow's restaurant next year, so I won't fall in love with it. Overall a nice experience, and looking forward to Dubrow's in 2015!"

  • "This was not my first time at Sorrel, but unfortunately this experience was a very bad one, so much so that the manager comped our meal. The waiter had no idea what was on the menu, to start. When I asked if he could hold the cumin on the filet mignon, he answered that the "chef would not make any changes to the menu because it was restaurant week". Mind you, I was ordering from the regular menu... I think the waiter did not know what cumin was. Then they "ran out" of filet mignon before the waiter could put the order in (he waited until after appetizers). He suggested a pork chop which came raw... bottom line, not a great experience... Previous experiences had been very good though. Don't think I will be going back unfortunately."

  • "I last went to Sorrell about 2 years ago. It was the only time I ever sent a meal back and I eat out frequently. My potatoes croquettes were frozen solid when I tried to eat them. But forgive and forget, and so I returned this weekend. My server was nice and friendly but went AWOL mid-meal and so getting attention was difficult. But what was so awful was my meal. I ordered the pork loin. Basically 3 pieces of off-white meat came covering some off-white mashed potato. My mother is an awful cook but even she would have apologized."

  • "Leaving the Med Center after an appointment, I was looking on Open Table for a place close by for an early dinner. i had previously only visited Sorrel for Lunch and Brunch. Ariel, our server was more than attentive and Ernesto, the GM and every staff member we encountered treated me and my 85 year old Mother as honored guests. The food was unusual for her tastes but because she felt at home she adventured and ordered the duck flatbread to compliment a more familiar "gumbo." I was able to add chicken to my hearty salad and we shared dessert. AWESOME EXPERIENCE!"

The service left quite a bit to be desired as it took a long time to get drink refills and orders taken. Most of us ordered from the HRW menu and received nicely sized portions. One of us, however, ordered from the regular menu and was disappointed in the serving size. Overall, it was nice and different, but I doubt I would return. It is very trendy."

  • "I have eaten here before and had no issues but this last time the waiter had no idea what the food was and couldn't explain (the very few) menu items. His service was very slow. I had lamb chops and they came out grossly undercooked. Had to send them back while my husbands food got cold. His duck was tough and had multiple bites of grizzle. Had it been one thing, I wouldn't have even done a review. But both meals and the service were not worth the prices. Won't go back. Better places to spend that kind of money."
