A word from Sorrel Urban Bistro
Born out of a vision to bring affordable farm-to-table dining to Houston, restaurateur Ray Salti created Sorrel Urban Bistro, a casually elegant and fresh design, featuring an ever-changing blackboard menu of organic, locally-grown cuisine. Sorrel represents Ray Salti's second fine-dining culinary endeavor in addition to Ray’s Grill, the highly-lauded farm-to-table concept in Fulshear, TX, 20 miles West of Houston.

In addition to a diverse menu selection featuring local organic produce, meat, sustainable fish, and wild game, Sorrel now offers a charcuterie bar with a wide variety of imported and housemade delicatessen along with artisan Texas cheeses, handcrafted breads and more.

Beverage service includes seasonally inspired cocktails, artisanal beers and diverse selection of 200 plus wines (25 percent organic.)

The two chefs at Sorrel show their creative side with the farm to market inspired menu and the results are delicious. The service was excellent, among the best I've experienced in a while. I also liked the live videos from the kitchen. You know you have to keep a super clean kitchen if it is constantly shown to your guests.

  • Very bad experience - unfortunately

This was not my first time at Sorrel, but unfortunately this experience was a very bad one, so much so that the manager comped our meal. The waiter had no idea what was on the menu, to start. When I asked if he could hold the cumin on the filet mignon, he answered that the "chef would not make any changes to the menu because it was restaurant week". Mind you, I was ordering from the regular menu... I think the waiter did not know what cumin was. Then they "ran out" of filet mignon before the waiter could put the order in (he waited until after appetizers). He suggested a pork chop which came raw... bottom line, not a great experience... Previous experiences had been very good though. Don't think I will be going back unfortunately.

I last went to Sorrell about 2 years ago. It was the only time I ever sent a meal back and I eat out frequently. My potatoes croquettes were frozen solid when I tried to eat them. But forgive and forget, and so I returned this weekend. My server was nice and friendly but went AWOL mid-meal and so getting attention was difficult. But what was so awful was my meal. I ordered the pork loin. Basically 3 pieces of off-white meat came covering some off-white mashed potato. My mother is an awful cook but even she would have apologized.

Leaving the Med Center after an appointment, I was looking on Open Table for a place close by for an early dinner. i had previously only visited Sorrel for Lunch and Brunch. Ariel, our server was more than attentive and Ernesto, the GM and every staff member we encountered treated me and my 85 year old Mother as honored guests. The food was unusual for her tastes but because she felt at home she adventured and ordered the duck flatbread to compliment a more familiar "gumbo." I was able to add chicken to my hearty salad and we shared dessert. AWESOME EXPERIENCE!

Went for dinner with my husband, it is very pricy but the food was very good and service was also good. It's very loud, and the ambience - well, it's more like a better cafeteria look with white table cloth. But again, the food was yummy and we would go back - with clients so the company can pay :)

As my department's event planner, I'm always on the lookout for new experiences. We have a vegetarian and a Gluten-Free in our mix, so I thought Sorrel would be a great place for us. The service left quite a bit to be desired as it took a long time to get drink refills and orders taken. Most of us ordered from the HRW menu and received nicely sized portions. One of us, however, ordered from the regular menu and was disappointed in the serving size. Overall, it was nice and different, but I doubt I would return. It is very trendy.

My friends and I had a great great brunch here during Houston Restaurant Weeks. The food was delicious and the $0.99 mimosas was a pleasant surprise. The only critique I have is that the decor of the restaurant doesn't fit the quality of food, service, and food prices. I would expect at least table cloths.

This place has some of the best farm to table dishes I've tried, and the service was excellent. The drinks we ordered were made very well. My only complaint is the noise level. We had to ask our server to repeat himself several times. But I guess that comes with an open kitchen concept.

Went here for Restaurant Week on Friday with my husband and daughter. We all had the fixed menu, all trying different things. It was all great. We plan to get back before the end of August to have what the others had as it was all so good. Service was excellent; attentive but not cloying and with a sense of fun and humor. Highly recommended!!!

I have eaten here before and had no issues but this last time the waiter had no idea what the food was and couldn't explain (the very few) menu items. His service was very slow. I had lamb chops and they came out grossly undercooked. Had to send them back while my husbands food got cold. His duck was tough and had multiple bites of grizzle. Had it been one thing, I wouldn't have even done a review. But both meals and the service were not worth the prices. Won't go back. Better places to spend that kind of money.

I ate there with my significant other on Saturday July 19th. I found the food so-so for the price and the wine list was pricey. Service was not very attentive. There are many bistro's like this in town that are better. Also didn't like that I had to valet park when they have a large parking lot.

Dined with friends and offered a bar-height table overlooking the kitchen. Glad we said yes, as we were able to get a good look at several dishes before they went out. We were impressed with the chef's attention to detail. Noise level was a bit high, though. The Lebanese Trio app (hummus, baba ganoush, tabouleh) was so good that one of us ordered it again for her main course! They ran out of the vegetarian dish, but My Hoisin Glazed Pork and Spicy Canton Noodle dish was excellent with nice heat (mild-to-moderate). Service was excellent, with waters frequently refilled and dishes served with proper timing and etiquette. Chocolate cake for dessert was poor/fair - find something else if you're a big dessert fan. Wife's coffee was good.

If you're looking for a semi-casual, hip yet fine dining experience, Sorrel Urban Bistro on West Alabama is a great choice. We've been there a handful of times and found their food to be inventive and consistent in quality and flavor. It offers an eclectic mix of American, French, Italian and even Lebanese-inspired dishes. From the lamb-lollipops to the stuffed tomatoes, you know you're getting something original at Sorrels. They also have a nice happy hour of specialty cocktails and well drinks. Last night I have the glazed double pork chop with sears scallops and roasted potatoes and veggies. Deeeelish!

We shared three things and all were quite good: flatbread, quail, and hallibut. Had a good waiter. The price of the wine is more than it should be however. It was 1 1/2 times the cost for a glass of a bottle of many the wines on the list. I just could not see ordering it.
