Sophia'sScrumptious!Crab tempura on mango, whole black bass, hangar steak - we couldn't get enough! Terrific service and really cozy ambience. Thrilled it's in the neighborhood.6/16/2013 12:00:00 AMAMAZINGI was absolutely impressed as was my friend. Service and food...impeccable.6/15/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat Service, Great FoodGreat drinks. Great food. Service fantastic, friendly. Will recommend to only those friends I think are deserving! ;)6/12/2013 12:00:00 AMCritiqueFood excellent and staff very nice. Overall accommodating to various food requests. One important observation - the prices are a bit too high. These are Center City prices for a neighborhood in South Philly. Although this is a "hot" neighborhood, these prices are a bit too "hot". If the overall food and drink prices were reduce a bit - even by just a dollar per item, I would definitely make this a much more regular spot.6/9/2013 12:00:00 AMThird timeThis was our third time dining at Sophia's. Each of the first two times, we were thrilled by this new addition to the neighborhood. Sophia's was elegant and understated and the cuisine was superb. This time, however, was a bit of a disappointment. The black bass was elegantly presented but tending toward the tasteless. (Do they need a new purveyor?) The stuffed chicken, which replaced the wonderful whole chicken, was bland - hard to do when fontina is a part of the mix. Our two friends had the paella - which remains Sophia's signature dish and altogether as good as it originally was. This is a world-class dish! Our other friend had a ravioli dish that she just loved. So, it was a 50-50 night. We will be back, especially for the paella!6/1/2013 12:00:00 AMSophia's didn't disappointExcellent experience from start to finish. Great food. Exceptional service. Intimate atmosphere. Will return again and again!5/17/2013 12:00:00 AMWe had a wonderful Mother'sWe had a wonderful Mother's Day brunch! My finicky in-laws had nothing but nice things to say, and other guests were really happy with the food, ambiance, and service. Coming from NYC, the service seemed a little slower than what we are used to, but they were very attentive and accommodating.5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMSophia'sWhat a great new place to have a wonderful dinner! The food was wonderful. Since I'm a picky eater it's challenging to find a menu I really like. This one was wonderful. The wine list could use improving. Overall, loved it!5/11/2013 12:00:00 AMService with a Smile at Sophia's!What a nice experience it was to dine at Sophia's! We were warmly greeted upon our arrival and shown to the best seat in the house on the second floor in the bay window overlooking Passyunk Avenue. The hostess and our server were warm and friendly, and the meal was lovely. We particularly enjoyed the crabcake appetizer and the tuna and whole fish entrees. We were treated to a complimentary dessert in celebration of our anniversary. As I told the hostess on our way out, we'll be back!5/11/2013 12:00:00 AMThe dinner was very good,The dinner was very good, the dessert could use some help.5/11/2013 12:00:00 AMWe were looking for a restaurantWe were looking for a restaurant on passyunk ave. and chose Sophia's on a whim. We were very pleasantly surprised. The specialty cocktails were fantastic, the food was excellent and the service was wonderful. We will definitely go back and bring along a few of our friends.5/10/2013 12:00:00 AMThe food was fabulous. I hadThe food was fabulous. I had the Caesar Salad (which was perfectedly dressed and the boiled eggs was a wonderful touch) and the Crispy Soft Shell Crabs- awesome presentation and everything tasted wonderful. Myfriend also had the Caesar Salad and the Crab Cakes which she said was wonderful also. I have already told many friends and will return to celebrate birthdays and other important events.5/10/2013 12:00:00 AMLunch or BrunchOne of our group was going to the airport for an overseas trip, so a light meal was perfect. We arrived at 4:30 pm on Sunday to find the lunch/brunch menu very much to our liking. Each of us (5 people) totally enjoyed our meal and the service was great. Our choices ranged from a burger, to the ravioli (small portion, we thought), to the grilled tuna sandwich to the paella. As indicated in a recent review, the paella was outstanding. We plan to return for dinner.5/5/2013 12:00:00 AMsecond time there -- foodsecond time there -- food as good this time as the first -- excellent variety of choices with eveything the six of us had woderful5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMAnniverary DinnerI selected this restaurant on the favorable review written by Phyllis Stein-Novack in the South Philadephia Review. For her professional review please go to the paper's website. As for our experience, I can only say that althoug the menu was dfferent than she described we were not disappointed and found the food delicious and the staff friendly.5/3/2013 12:00:00 AMThe food was very good butThe food was very good but the menu was small, not a good selection of food.5/3/2013 12:00:00 AMDelicious food and great atmosphereThe food was wonderful and the atmosphere was beautiful. I was very happy with experience and would go again!5/2/2013 12:00:00 AMThis is our third time atThis is our third time at Sophia's and each experience has been exceptional. Food refined, well prepared and plated beautifully. Relaxed white tablecloth atmosphere where you can enjoy conversation in a lively environment. Not too loud, just filled with sounds of people enjoying good food and good company. The host greeted us on arrival, recognized us by sight and welcomed us back. Apologized for not knowing our name, but stated he would remember that on our next visit. Very personable and upon our exit was genuinely interested in our feedback, both positive and negative. The only negative was that the black bass was not filleted or I would have ordered it. Apps all can be shared and apple ravioli is a must to try. Plan to return!!!!4/20/2013 12:00:00 AMOne of the BEST in Philadelphia. One of the BEST in Philadelphia. The food and portions were perfect. Our waiter's suggestions and descriptions were very helpful in making our choices. He was available without being intrusive (a rare find these days). Each dish was a beautiful little package without being too over the top it was well thought out delivering a lovely presentation but not too TOO! We made another reservation on our way out for next month and the only other place in the city where we've done that is Bibou.4/20/2013 12:00:00 AMWorth repeat visitsLovely space for dinner with friends. Clean modern interior, white tablecloths, nice spacing so that conversations do not flow over from neighbors. The menu is limited, but very sophisticated. Appetizers worth trying are Sophia's meatballs on creamy polenta. Whole fish was delicious - if you are OK deboning it yourself. The veal tenderloin was well-prepared but the crust has an odd texture. Sides of asparagus & mushrooms were worth trying. In a city with so many amazing restaurants, it is wasy to east someplace new each time you go out. Sophia's is worth visiting again.4/20/2013 12:00:00 AMReally good food, nice experience,Really good food, nice experience, except upstairs the acoustics need improvement. Even though people are not packed into the room, the noise from regular conversation makes it close to impossible to hear what the person across the table is saying.4/20/2013 12:00:00 AMWe came upon Sophia's viaWe came upon Sophia's via Open Table and thought it was worth a try. We're so glad we did! We were there early (5:30) so it was very quiet. We loved the decor...tin ceiling, decorative fireplace, white tableclothes. Cozy yet chic. The food was delicious and I loved the pear drop martini!4/20/2013 12:00:00 AMFirst time there -- impressed.First time there -- impressed. Place is cute - apparently some renovations to happen soon. Great fries, paella and veal. Desserts were good too - especially the creme brulee with drunken pineapple. Service was delightful -- thank you, Jesse. We will be back.4/18/2013 12:00:00 AMPerfect except for one thing WePerfect except for one thing
We loved the atmosphere, the inventive cuisine and the service. However, the noise level was the one issue that would prevent us from returning. It's just not enjoyable when you need to shout to carry on a conversation with the person directly in front of you. If they can do something to lower the noise level the place would be perfect.4/13/2013 12:00:00 AMQuiet pleased.Overall it was really good. It wasn't just OMG amazing, but it was really good. Excellent service and the lamb shank and paella were very good. The service ranked the paella against that of Spain. I wouldn't go that far, but I would have it again. $100 for 2 people including a bottle of wine, appetizer, 2 entrees, and 1 dessert. Not bad.4/12/2013 12:00:00 AMWe first enjoyed a cocktailWe first enjoyed a cocktail at the bar and when we were ready to dine our table was ready right at the time of our reservation. The menu choices were few but each that we ordered were excellent. The spinach salad was fresh and delectable. The skewered shrimp were very tasty. Our main courses were the paella,it was scrumptious and the veal tenderloin was delicious. We were not rushed but they did run out of several desserts. My waist line thanks them for this! We would definitely return to Sophia's.4/6/2013 12:00:00 AMUp-scale on Passyunk AveTable for 6 on Saturday night.
Appetizers: meatballs were good, shrimp was OK.
Entrees: Paella was good but the lamb shank was excellent.
Service was very good.
Overall, it's a little more up-scale than most on Passyunk Ave.4/6/2013 12:00:00 AMOur first time at Sophia's.Our first time at Sophia's. The food was fantastic. Our waitress was wonderful as well. Only negative comment would be that we waited a little too long to be seated and served our dinner. But overall, we will be back!4/6/2013 12:00:00 AMAMAZING food!! Staff wasAMAZING food!! We got the meatball/polenta appetizer only because it had 5 meatballs. I never eat meatballs out - but the group convinced me to try one. It was delicious, worthy of my grandmom. The coffee was delicious and they even warmed the milk for us.4/4/2013 12:00:00 AMWe went there for Easter brunch. We went there for Easter brunch. It was their inaugural run at brunch and I believe that it will continue now on Saturday and Sundays. It was quite good. And I loved their specialty cocktails! The food was excellent as was the service. Joe, who I think is one of the owners, stopped by and chatted with us. Very friendly. Cozy restaurant with attention to quality food. Bar looks fun too...so I look forward to going back and hanging out there too!3/31/2013 12:00:00 AMThis was one of the best diningThis was one of the best dining experiences we have had! The food is cooked perfectly. Everything is fresh. The drinks are one of a kind. The staff and owner were amazing. So very friendly. I cant wait to go back. It looks like I will be there newest regular!3/29/2013 12:00:00 AMNice dinner and good serviceFood and service were very good. The sashimi tuna mini tacos were excellent. They are small but it's a decent amount of tuna and they are a good starter size without being too filling. The salmon entree and baby spinach salad were also both very good. Portions of the entrees are on the smaller side but are a normal and healthy size portion. Was there on a Thursday night before heading to a Flyers game. Only one other table was full in the dinibg area (which is small) but quite a few prople in the bar area. Would definitely go back snd recommend to others.3/28/2013 12:00:00 AMWe enjoyed the room.
