Diner Reviews
  • "One of the first nice days here in Boston and the doors were open! We sat up front so we could enjoy the fresh, cool air but it did get chilly and the doors were shut shortly after we received our meal - it was perfect timing. I like variation but the main entrees on the menu did seem a little funky to me. In the end, we shared calamari, the brussel sprout and bacon pizza and a desert (3 women) and it was perfect. Food was delicious!"

  • "Awesome variety on the menu - suitable for many different people. Also, waitresses were very nice and manager came over at one point to make sure we were enjoying our meal. Spring rolls were UNREAL!!"

  • "My wife and I first met here 5 years ago. So this place has history with us. Food items were very good. Probably the best gluten free menu I have seen in a while. Gluten free pizza for an appetizer, which was the best GF pizza I have had. Very good wine list. Both entrees (Roast Chicken, GF Pasta dish) were very good. Our waitress was efficient. That is the only real positive. Aside from the 10 minutes it took for the greeting, she paid attention and managed the timing well. She didn't introduce herself, and she was fake pleasant. It was very noisy for the ambience that this restaurant seems to go for. The feel is dark, warm, and candle-lit which is nice for a romantic dinner. But it was very noisy also, which was the biggest negative."

  • "Sonsie appears very popular, but I was very disappointed. It was too dark to read the menu and see my food, too noisy to talk to my friends, and the food was mediocre at best. I ordered the striped bass special, and the fish was breaded and deep fried, which seemed totally inappropriate for striper."

  • "Our friends have been raving about Sonsie forever so my husband and I finally got ourselves there to see what all the hype is about. It did not disappoint! We started with the oysters and mussels, which were incredible. They were cooked perfectly. My husband got the branzini for his main course, and the piece of fish that game out was absolutely gigantic. He said it was the best fish that he can remember having. I got the brussel sprout and black pepper bacon pizza which was INCREDIBLE! Their hot and dirty martinis were made perfectly as well. Highly recommend for foodies or for a great date night!"

  • "Brunch was pretty busy. Best to make a reservation and things will be nice and smooth."

  • "We love this restaurant for its great service, vibe and location. It's upbeat, hip and the service and staff are unpretentious and professional. The menu is pleasing but the food is just fair. Knowing this, we would still come back and recommend to our friends. The best part is just sitting with a cocktail and appetizer(s) with tables facing the street and the doors open to the sidewalk. Very bistro feeling."

  • "We always have a fantastic meal here! We had oysters on the half shell for the first time here and they were delicious! Try the Mei Krob...it's awesome! It's a spicy thai dish (ham, egg, shrimp, chicken, sliced jalapeno, sirachi, over noodles to describe the main ingredients). The manager told us it has been on the menu for 20 years!"

  • "Great food, EXCELLENT service, great ambiance, would definitely go again!"

  • "I usually love Sonsie, however this time not so much... I had reservations. When we got to the host she told us the only space they had was downstairs in a private party room. There was a dinner party going on, we were the only ones there that were not part of it (akward!). The whole reason we chose Sonsie is, we love sitting at the mini tables to people watch and have fun. Instead we were sent to the dungeon. To top it off, we had the worst waiter ever. The girl we had was clueless. I wanted to order the special. I asked her if I could substitute the broccoli for spinach. She said no because they had already portioned out ingredients in the morning. What does that even mean? My Prosseco glass was empty and she never asked if wanted more."

  • "Great place for lunch, noise level was good, service excellence, food delicious. The olive oil on the pizza was fantastic, and the dough was on the thinner side (which i like) with a little char but not over cooked. Very pleased with the meal and experience. Will definitely go back again and recommend to everyone."

  • "Went here for the first time since I was given a gift card. Had a reservation for 6pm when they were to start dinner service. Myself and 2 others were seated promptly. On a Monday it was not very busy. But the food was top notch. We all shared the calamari and the homemade port wine appetizer. We also shared the brussels sprout and bacon pizza which was just amazing. Wine selection is intense but we all decided to just go with a beer, of which their selection is fairly basic. Would definitely go again when they have the front windows open so we can sip wine and people watch when it gets warmer out!"

  • "I keep going back to Sonsie for their cheese burger pizza! It is literally the most fablous meal, which I crave often. The dough is light an airy, with chopped tomatoes, onions, lettuce, and delicious crumbled ground beef with melted cheese. The best part is the "special sauce" they top the entire pizza with. It is absolutely delicious and I can't get enough! If you go to Sonsie, get the burger pizza. It's great to share as an appetizer, but I always order it for my meal because it's too good to share!!!"

  • "5 friends and I went here for a late dinner on a Friday night. We did make a reservation, and were seated as soon as we arrived. Our server Halialai was fantastic. She was very attentive (but didn't hover), knowledgeable, and friendly. The wine list was extensive, but not overwhelming and the food was fantastic. The oysters were very fresh, and both the striped bass special and the scallops and pork belly were melt in your mouth delicious, especially for the price. Sonsie is moderately priced, but the food is that of a higher scale restaurant. The ambiance is a bit noisy, but was good for us as we are a rather boisterous group, so we didn't bother anyone around us. I will definitely return!"

  • "Yummy french toast. Attentive but not overly friendly waitress. Busy for Sunday brunch. I recommend."

  • "Everything about the place is really nice -- the food, the service, the décor. Only exception is the noise level. The music is way too loud and people need to sort of shout over the music to be heard at their own table. Makes for a very loud experience overall. Other than that (or if you can get seated away from the speakers), then this place is absolutely wonderful."

  • "The entire experience was great. We were seated right away, our server was very kinds and attentive. Our food was all great, we shared a few plates between us and were all more than full. The only thing that I would say is that it was hard to hear each other talking as the noise level was very high and we were seated right next to other parties. I think that this was likely part of the experience, so if you plan to have an audible conversation with your friends you may want to consider another place, but if you can put up with the noise, then this is a great place to eat."

  • "Very nice people who seem to really care about what they're doing. Our waitress was perfect! The food was great. It was a little noisy is the only fault."

  • "We fully enjoyed our experience at Sonsie, having a wonderful dinner and bottle of wine on a Saturday night. The service was top knotch and the food was delicious! Will definitely be going back!"

  • "All in all a very good dinner. Oysters, salad, and duck were very good. Pastas a bit bland but better this way than overseasoned. Very nice staff."

  • "good service...interesting menu...a little pricey but worth it...chic..."

  • "We got there at 11 right when it open and got seated right away. It was still a bit empty but within 30 minutes the place was crowded (it was a Saturday morning). Only complaint wasn't that the people were loud but the music coming from the speakers was loud. I'm a college student and me and my friend both thought it was just too loud of music for a Saturday morning brunch crowd. Other than that the food was delicious and the staff was attentive. I would easily go back."

  • "We met a couple friends of ours for a valentines-weekend dinner and it didn't disappoint. They had made the suggestion based on their previous positive experience and we had wanted to try Sonsie for quite a while. The food was great, ambience was great - but even more impressive was the service. Our waiter was a true professional, answering a couple questions, and always stopping by at the right time. Our glasses (water/wine/beer) were never empty, and the manager stopped by to check in and make sure we were all enjoying ourselves. One of the staff even took our picture for us on request. Everyone was genuinely friendly and seemed to take pride in making sure we had a great experience - and we did. We'll definitely be back."

  • "The food tasted great - although they forgot to include a major component to the dish. The wait was extremely long for dinner - after we were seated it was almost one hour until we got our meal. The manager did come by to check in with us, and also to bring the good that was missing from my meal. My husband said he would never go back - I would try it again."

  • "Went here expecting great food, and I was really disappointed. I had a pancetta with meatballs in a red sauce. It wasn't bad just very bland, nothing special at all. The boyfriend got a spicy chicken pizza, with sour cream and guac, very mediocre. He didn't even finish the pizza which really surprised me because he'll eat anything. The drinks were awesome and so was our server. I probably wouldn't come back, unless it was just for a drink."

  • "My girlfriend and I had a delightful meal here. They had a great music selection and their service was great. But most importantly to food was quite good. I strongly recommend the duck as it was fantastic. The mussels were also a great starter. I'd recommend the place to anyone."

  • "A wonderful Brunch place for the blistering winter around Boston"
    Dined on 2/9/2014
  • "Attractive restaurant, great menu and location. That said, I will not return. The restaurant was simply way, way too loud. Our server had to constantly ask us to repeat ourselves, and everyone at my table needed to shout to be heard. Root cause of the noise really seemed to be the volume level of the music in the restaurant, which then everyone had to shout over to be heard. My attempt to point this out was ignored."

  • "If you are looking for a good meal and little conversation this place is great. Otherwise the acoustics are terrible. The music is way too loud and you have to scream to be heard. The waiter could barely hear us talk. The music choice is ridiculous. Loud booming music with lots of base. A nice blues or jazz could have been perfect. On a lighter note...the service was great, the waiter was lovely and the food was excellent"

  • "We left another restaurant after appetizers because we very disappointed in the food and came to Sonsie. We told them of our experience and the server was AMAZING! He turned our night around! Food was outstanding! I couldn't have asked for a better experience. Our 5 year anniversary was saved! Thank you!!!"

  • "Have been going for many years and have some new favs in the south end but in the BB I really like Sonsie. Good bar and food is consistently satisfying. The new gnocchi dish was great except was it really baby spinach or kale??"

  • "The food at Sonsie was quite good. I had a delicious cheese, chutney and cracker appetizer, followed by the duck and then some dessert. Everything tasted great. The duck was cooked perfectly. Honestly, my only problem with this place was how much my table's server rushed us along. We didn't feel particularly welcome by her. I have a feeling it is not the norm here, but it was off-putting."

  • "This is my second visit to Sonie while visiting Boston and staying in the back Bay Area. Sonsie is really different. It has a great lively atmosphere...but not too crazy. I went there with another couple and we all were pleased with our meals. Low romantic lighting and a very pleasant server added to our experience. Service was very timely. The burger was gourmet style. The pappardelle dish, the salmon and my monk fish were all delicious. When we return to Boston for business next year we will return to Sonsie."
