Sonsie - BostonAlmost thereSonsie is a vibrant popular restaurant on Newberry st. in Boston. It does a fine job of catering to a large group of clients. It's not the kind of place out of which you will emerge with strong positive or negative feelings--but it fulfills expectations well. I came with three friends for brunch and everything was just fine, although I'm not sure what they use for the sparkling blood orange juice in their mimosas--it doesn't taste at all like blood oranges. On the other hand, the frittata was quite good, and my companions were happy with their varied egg and salad dishes, although one was less happy with the scrambled eggs. To start off with, we ordered oysters and blood orange mimosas. Oysters were on the small side and definitely not the best we've had (especially for $2.75 each). For entrees, we ordered eggs benedict with salmon and a grilled chicken sandwich. The crab bread pudding was unusual and delicious--not heavy at all and so yummy. My husband had the scallop appetizer and raved about it. He also loved his peppered steak and the spinach (separately ordered). My halibut, a special, was wonderful, served with carmelized onions, gnocchi, and earthy mushrooms. Wine was wonderful, and my husband loved his blueberry goat cheese tart. Service was a bit slow getting started but them improved. The food/service was excellent. I'd say it's a bit loud for my preference, but, I suppose that's just because it's popular and everyone's having a good time. We started dinner at the bar with drinks before dinner and found the bar keepers to be very attentive to our needs. Once we moved to the table our waiter was very energetic and helpful in heloing us make our selections. Our appetizers, entree, and desserts were all very good. We were in the second row of tables facing the open view of Newbury's foot traffic, so our starter of people watching was very satisfying. We sipped blood orange mimosas and feasted on rum banana French toast and the sausage/potato frittata, both were large portions & delish. The only reason I didn't give the food 5 stars is that I like a little crunch in my French toast - the flavors were great, but rum caramel sauce took away the crispness of the toast, I guess that is the downside of rum caramel! The servers were friendly, attentive, but not obtrusive. Service was also surprisingly attentive, given the lively bar scene in the other half of the restaurant.
