A word from Sons of Essex
The Sons of Essex menu is a reflection of the diverse melting pot of cultures within the Lower East Side. The old school 'Bowery Boys' atmosphere and 'Gangs of New York' vibe pay homage to the history of the Lower East Side, fusing a traditional american comfort food menu with a range of spices from LES immigrants of the past and local ingredients including Essex Street Market fruits & vegetables. Diner Reviews
  • "Loved the croque monsieur and the truffle mac and cheese!"

  • "Ordered the lobster egg benedict. It came with a salad and NO dressing, not even olive oil. Same for my partner who ordered the salmon sandwich, no dressing on the salad. We really came for the ambiance taht was describe in all the reviews and the live DJ: there was NO ambiance and NO DJ. Maybe it's bad luck and we got there the wrong day. Ideal place if you're 21 and looking to celebrate your birthday though, there was plenty of these!!"

  • "The wait staff was very nice and were very knowledgeable about the menu. It was nice to see employees who genuinely knew what each food on the menu was like. They came frequently to fill our drinks, which was appreciated. The food arrived quickly, the presentation was awesome and the taste sealed the deal."

  • "it was way too loud and the food took forever to get. Service was very slow. Cool place otherwise."

  • "IDK, maybe I'm getting old, but the loud music during dinner, (hip hop) was annoying. The food to us was overpriced, We ordered the short rib & it came out all by itself on the plate, its all Al a cart, but even with that, throw a piece of toast or something on the plate. The fried chicken plate came out with one drumstick and one thigh and a little medicine size cup of cole slaw. $29.00. Everything was delicious but not enough at all. The drinks were also very good. I know how expensive the rents are in Manhattan but I would have liked a little more for the money. We went next door and got drinks for half the price of Sons of Essex. 14.00 for a vodka and soda in a small glass..."

  • "food was great, atmosphere very hip, but portions were pretty small for the price. felt like very poor value."
    Dined on 3/22/2014
  • "The drinks are great. The appetizers were on point. We had the truffle mac n cheese(a must have),and the pork belly sliders.Main courses were the fried chicken(burnt on the outside but at least moist on the inside, not much on the seasoning)and the burger(a basic run of the mill burger with nothing special). The sides with the chicken were limited to some awful asian inspired honey dip, some pickled slaw, and 2 jalapeno corn bread pieces about the size of a mini muffin. The burger came with garlic fries. For desert we had the hot chocolate cake which was burnt(it was cooked so much that the chocolate lava center solidified, and you can taste the burnt). When we said the chicken and the cake were burnt, they did nothing about it."

  • "Second time visit and really enjoyed it again. Being a Friday evening it was loud and young,( we are part of the over 55 crowd) but we expected it. I would most likely come back on a weeknight. The staff were very attentive. My partner and I really really enjoyed the Kale Ceaser salad."

  • "The Bad: Came here for brunch & knew about the DJ but didn't expect it to be louder than a concert. Music was distorted bc it was so loud. We yelled to each other the whole time & ears were ringing afterwards. Also didn't care for the DJs set list. The crowd was trashy, it was uncomfortable. The carafe of Bellini wasn't mixed very well, all the purée was stuck @ the bottom. The Good: lobster Benedict was delicious & so were tater tots! Server was nice & did a great job considering how loud it was & how obnoxious the tables surrounding us were. I do not recommend this place for ppl who actually like each other and want to have a conversation."

  • "We had so much fun here! The music was great, waiter was very nice and recommended some neighborhood bars. Food was much better than what we expected from the reviews. All in all we had a great time!"
    Dined on 3/15/2014
  • "The food was unbelievable. Young and energetic crowd. My only complaint is the music was to way to loud. To create a great and fun atmosphere the music should be at level where people can talk to their firends without screaming their heads off.... This is the only reason I would not be rushing back. Otherwise Sons of Essex has made it into my top 5 restaurants in NYC....Please turn the music down so I can come back...The Short Rib dish was out of this world....Hats off to the chef...."

  • "Sons of essex had great music, loud nonetheless, but enjoyable. The mac&cheese, pizza on flat bread, and pork were amazing. Fried chicken was not impressive. We would go back, and if not for the food, for the bar scene."

  • "The venue is a great space with character. The staff is friendly but our server was a little less than attentive. Luckily, the rest of the staff would assit when we asked for something. The steak and eggs were great but the mac n cheese omlet could have used some extra sharp cheese for flavor."

  • "Went in for brunch on Saturday and really enjoyed the setting. The DJ was on point! Food was good too. That lobster Egg's Benedict was to die for."

  • "The service was so incredibly bad that it totally ruined every other aspect of our dining experience. We had a reservation for 11.15am, we arrived at 11am to be told to wait by the bar to be seated. At 11.45am we went back to ask them if they were going to seat us, they finally took us to a table at 12pm. No one came and took our drinks order for 30 minutes even after asking someone to be sent over. Then they didn't have the beer we ordered which was on the menu. We only found out they didn't have the beer after we questioned where our drinks where which was another 30 minutes later and our food had arrived and we still had no drinks. On checking out our bill had the three beers on there we never received. Didn't even receive an apology."

  • "Went here on a Friday night before an engagement party a few blocks away. The service was great and so were the cocktails. The food was very good."

  • "I was so excited to try this restaurant after reading good reviews and seeing the menu online. Despite my food being just OK, the service and ambiance was terrible. We arrived for our reservation with one diner stuck in traffic so the hostess told us to grab a drink at the bar and to grab her when our friend arrived. By the time she came, they had given our table away but we were told we'd be seated only ten minutes later. That's fine- our fault, no problem. Ten minutes turned into 1.5 HOURS of waiting for a table, despite the hostess reassuring us every few moments that a table was "getting up." Food was OK, music was so loud we couldn't hold a conversation, and half the online menu wasn't even offered. I was very disappointed."

  • "This place is a scene. If you're in the mood to be at a club at one in the afternoon, with early 20 somethings in beanie hats, then this is your spot. Service was great, but the food overall was just OK; except for the awesome Truffle Tots."
    Dined on 3/1/2014
  • "We went there for brunch and enjoyed the food, but the music was just way too loud. It's probably geared for people who want to sit around and send texts on their phones. If you're interested in actually conversing with the person next to you, though, this is not the place."
    Dined on 3/1/2014
  • "People sat down AFTER us and were served BEFORE us? The seating placement by the hostess seemed to make one end of the restaurant terrible crowded, while the other side was open and empty. A booth set up with table setting for four people was left empty-while we were smashed together at a small table for 4??? The worst thing really was the food service, I have eaten there before with much better service. Lets hope this was a one time fluke?"

  • "I hadn't been to Sons of Essex in quite some time and never for brunch! It was a great decision and I will definitely be going back."
    Dined on 2/22/2014
  • "I absolutely love this place! This was my second time going for brunch and its always a great experience. There is a DJ spinning old school tunes so you're jamming while you eat. The lobster benedict never disappoints! I also tried to macaroni omelette which I didn't love but would continue to return to this place. Also must try the truffle tater tots."

  • "place was super cute and fun! food was good but not amazing, mostly you're paying for the atmosphere. still a great experience. loved the music"
    Dined on 2/22/2014
  • "While I love the music choice, we needed to scream to hear each other. It felt I was having dinner at a club. The food was not worth it's price. I did love the honey lavender cheesecake!"

  • "I love this place. Always a good energy and delicious food. Will come back as much as I can"

  • "Had a fabulous brunch here. Have already re-booked to take friends. Can recommend the macaroni omelette and the perfectly seasoned, crispy tater tots. The atmosphere is cool and moody with low lights and great music."

  • "I have been going to Son's for a while now but only last week had dinner. The food was great lobster tacos are a must. The music is always old school hip hop which is great. The staff does a great job very attentive. I recommend all of my friends to go to just hang out but after having to dinner I will tell them to make room for some food."

  • "I was really looking forward to this restaurant, as I had heard good things. I was pretty disappointed with the overall experience and the food specifically. My scallops were over cooked (half) and undercooked (the other half), the 21oz Rib-eye would have fit on a small dinner plate and the Lavender Cheesecake had a chemical aftertaste that was just very unpleasant. The service was OK, nothing special."
    Dined on 2/14/2014
  • "Slimmed down options , Food excellent but limited choices disappointed. Good vibe, nice music playing, excellent waiter"
    Dined on 2/12/2014
  • "Wow... never had a saturda brunch like this!! If you feel like partying and dancing while drinking a pitcher of mimosa and having a great benedict plate, it's THE place to be!! Thanks for the great experience!! Will absolutly go back."
    Dined on 2/8/2014
  • "The food was great and the music was awesome!!!! The service could have been better, but the airless made up for it later on in the meal. Will definitely return."

  • "Live around the corner from this place. Good if you can get a table early, bar area gets packed! Get the Lobster Cobb (yes...at a bar) and the mac and cheese!"

  • "Love the energy at sons of essex. The staff are cool and friendly and the food usually comes out excellent. Except this particular trip to the restaurant it took 20mins to get seated for 2.30pm reservation, it took forever to get a drink at the bar which at the time wasnt really busy and my food came to the table cold..."

  • "Great food, lively atmosphere and an enjoyable experience. We had lobster taco's which were fantastic, chicken lollipops, the cod, and the best thing i've ever tasted, the grilled cheese with gruyere and duck inside...phenonemal."
    Dined on 2/7/2014
  • "Service and food is great, not cheap on liquor so drinks are awesome. Did just 2 ppl and shared 2 appetizers, one cheese, one entree and one dessert and was full. Great eats everytime. Music is always great too, never feel rushed out server is always attentive"
    Dined on 2/6/2014
  • "Discovered this place through a Groupon offer and would definitely go back. Main courses of Cod and Skirt Steak were very good. Appetizers of pork croquettes and calamari were great. The custom cocktails were really good. Win win, cool space, chill neighborhood."
    Dined on 2/5/2014
  • "I had a great experience at Sons of Essex. The cocktails were truly phenomenal. i would go back just for them. The food was great as well. I had the lobster tacos and the kale salad. Both were excellent. Our server was great; he was knowledgable and effectively out of the way. The only issue I had was the noise level. Apparently brunch was dying down and the music, for at least the first half hour, was unbearably loud."

  • "Went for brunch on 2.1. An awesomely fun brunch experience, with great food. I would highly recommend Sons of Essex and I look forward to returning for more!"

  • "Sons of Essex fits all occasions from date night to group events. I even took coworkers here after hours for dinner and drinks and they all loved the place. Old school and new school hip hop music paired with great food and drinks -- Can't Go Wrong! Servers are always excellent. Tip - truffle pizza is an amazing share-able starter!"
