A word from Sonoma Restaurant + Wine Bar
At Sonoma Restaurant and Wine Bar, our culinary mission is straightforward - use the best local ingredients as simply as possible. New American Cuisine places an emphasis on seasonal ingredients that are regionally available, and our menu changes frequently to reflect the Mid-Atlantic’s offerings. The first floor, a bustling, “upscale-casual” bistro and wine bar, offers superior moderately-priced cuisine by using the best local, organic, and naturally raised ingredients. The menu bears a southern European influence, and is comprised of four groups: cheese and charcuterie, handmade pasta and pizzas, wood-grilled meats and fish, and organic salads and produce. The second floor features a lounge and reserve wine bar along with a dining room for private events. Reservations are strongly recommended and can be taken by telephone or through OpenTable.

We recently made a reservation here to meet up with my sister and some colleagues, 5 people in total. I didn't know what to expect, I hadn't really heard much about the wine bar, good or bad. We had a great spacious table in the back, the wine was served at the right temperature, the cheese and charcuterie plate was delicious, and everyone raved about dinner. The ambiance was great for our fun group, but somehow could also work for a date. We'll definitely be back.

We wanted something for a meal before a Folger performance, and the small plates at Sonoma were perfect. Really good food, but not too heavy, and good wines by the glass. I'll definitely go back. The cider tasting was a bonus.

We needed a place close to the Hill and nice enough for a celebration. Wasn't sure how the menu would suit our group of five, including some pesce-vegetarians and non-eaters of shellfish. The food turned out to be lovely - creative but not too out-there. Cheese board, salad with salmon, fried oysters, grilled calamari and a Greek pizza worked very well for us. The wine list offered excellent choices, too. It was a bit noisy early but quieted down during our meal. Service was friendly and professional. My initial doubts were completely dispelled.

It's not my first time dining at Sonoma, but the food and service (and proximity to Folger Theatre) keeps me coming back. I dined there recently on an evening when we had theatre tickets. We informed our server, an enthusiastic and efficient young woman, and were served quickly and out in plenty of time for our play. We ordered an array of small plates to share (full entrees are also available) and particularly enjoyed the beet salad, a delicious twist on the usual roasted beet-and-goat-cheese salad, their fabulous meatballs and polenta, and calamari, which was not the usual deep fried rings, but rather the calamari "tubes," sauteed until tender with a delicious accompaniment of white beans. I checked "notable wine list" not because they have an extensive wine list, but because it is small but well-curated, with offerings not found on every list in the city.

Great for a special occasion, (we came out at just under $100 for two for dinner with a white wine flight for each, though no dessert or coffee at the end) we had a lovely time. We had a three cheese selection which we enjoyed, but actually more impressive than the cheeses were the fruit spreads and house-made mustard. The house-made charcuterie was all very good, as were the beet salad, the burrata and the meatball small plates. On the white wine flight, we loved the first and the third, though the second glass was oddly blah. The ambiance is quiet and romantic, and the service was stellar.

We're amazed at the prices for wine at Sonoma. Glasses of wine start at $12 or $13 and there are very few bottles under $40. For a wine bar, Sonoma should offer a wider range of wine varieties and prices. We ended up ordering glasses of beer, which were more reasonable. Although the food was good, the menu is limited and again overpriced.

Really enjoyed the meal - meatballs and beet salad, calamari and Brussels sprouts, with a decent Malbec and finished with chocolate gelato and bread pudding. All food nicely presented and well prepared - very flavorful. Our waiter was engaging...but busy and forgetful. Brought our check before bringing dessert and had clearly forgotten our dessert order. It also took some time to catch his attention as he was more focused on a larger table (maybe they were famous?). Also restaurant seemed not to recognize that we had met the reservation as opentable contacted me to say I wasn't getting credit for the reservation. Second time that has happened (different restaurants) and very annoying!

We live nearby and stopped by for dinner for the first time last week. We were very underwhelmed by the food and the menu generally. I was expecting more variety and more interesting entree options and was surprised by the number of burger and pizza options on the menu. The entrees were not very exciting and neither was the special -- grilled salmon with rice and asparagus. It sounded like a lean cuisine or at best something I'd throw together on a weekday. I settled on the mushroom and sausage pizza, which was kind of soggy. My husband got the fettucine. The pasta quality was good but the sauce tasted like it came out of a jar. Again, a bit of a lean cuisine or airplane food feeling. Our first and probably last meal there.

We got here at 5:30 on a Saturday night, when the restaurant was nearly deserted. Service was pleasant and helpful, wine selection was very nice and moderate to higher priced, and menu offered good choices. We four had a good time, but by our departure, the place was full and getting quite noisy.

Sonoma is a great wine bar with creative flights in beautiful glassware. The food also offers great entrees, in addition to your normal cheese and charcuterie boards. Service was a bit slow when we were there, but the atmosphere was really pleasant and our group of 8 enjoyed the evening.

A great restaurant with wonderful service but the bar crowd can get loud and stupid. Prone to entitled your Capital Hill staffers from the Midwest desperate to be cool and typically drunk after two drinks. Recommend sitting towards the back if you are on a date and want to avoid the F-bomb with a drunk Louisville accent. Steak is excellent, as are scallops. Great menu that ranges from burgers and pizza to fine dining.

Its location close to the Capital and the Folger Theatre is a plus. The extremely dim lighting where most of the tables are located is a big negative. It's so negative that you're not talking about the food and instead, are complaining about the inablility to see the food. During daylight hours it's bad and during the evening, it's intorerable. Diners should be able to see what they're eating. Bringing the lighting up a few notches would help considerably. I might even like the food that much more.

An all-around excellent restaurant. The ambiance and interior are top-notch, very relaxing but vibrant for a Thursday evening. The waitress was incredibly friendly and helpful - she patiently took our orders in rounds (cheese ordered and consumed before we ordered salads, etc). Sonoma has a decent wine selection, and it's easy to try sample many different varieties. And the food, although a little pricy, was very delicious! I would definitely recommend Sonoma.

I'll go again. I took the wife for a date. There were less people on a Thursday than I thought there would be. The food and drinks were wonderful and our waiter was great. Sonoma was one of those places I passed on a weekly basis when strolling through the Cap Hill area and always wanted to try. I finally made reservations to take my sister and her fiance, visiting from NC, there and sadly, Sonoma was really only mediocre. The food selection was good and the wine list was competitive for the area; however, it was completely overpriced and the service was slow. The scallops I ordered were also not the best quality due to the grit I continued to find as I bit down. I doubt I will venture back to Sonoma with all the other must-try places nearby.

Had never been to Sonoma before and decided to give it a try for Restaurant Week. Ordered off their special menu and have to say our food was by in large delicious. I ordered a basil shrimp pizza that was oddly flavorless (just cooked shrimp dropped on top of an otherwise normal/not outstanding pesto pizza). The portions were generous and our waiter steered us towards the house white special which was delicious. Dessert portion was small, but otherwise delicious. Great ambiance and will give this place another try not during Restaurant Week.

I went to Sonoma for lunch with a friend during Restaurant Week. Amazing time, the server was very polite and helpful. Food was amazing, as always. The only problem was that it took almost half an hour between finishing our entry and getting our dessert. The gelato had started the melt significantly on mine. The server had apologized several times for it taking so long, it seemed like something was going on in the kitchen. Disappointing, but the only blemish of my experience.

Another fantastic brunch at Sonoma. This time I had the steak and eggs with gorgonzola polenta. The polenta was a supreme standout. The steak was a little underdone but not enough to stop me from chowing down on it hard. Very nice spices on the meat so it didn't need any sauce. Service was wonderful as always. My husband and I had a wonderful dinner at Sonoma Restaurant and Wine Bar last Sunday night. We've passed by the restaurant a number of times but finally got the chance to have a meal there. The food and service was great! Our waiter was very knowledgeable about the menu and made some good suggestions. Our favorites from the menu were the salmon chowder soup special, the scallops with bacon jam and the brownie dessert. The only downside is the restaurant layout. I feel like there is a lot of wasted space. Even though it wasn't crowded, we were seated in a corner really close to another table. There just wasn't much seating downstairs.

I've had excellent dinner at Sonoma, and it is my favorite place on the hill for wine and cheese after work. So I was surprised that brunch was so sub-par. Breakfast entrees were $14+ and pretty standard. My omelet was all egg, barely any filling with some potatoes. Definitely something I could have made myself. Unfortunately there wasn't salt or pepper on the table - my unseasoned eggs could have used it. Coffee comes in tiny cups. Great service, of course, but now I get why the place was practically empty on a Sunday morning while other Hill eateries have lines out the door. Will be back for the bar, not for the brunch.
