A word from SoMa
Susan Short of Family Beautiful writes:

"Brilliant and creative cuisine that goes way beyond a typical diner experience. From portabello and asparagus fries to delightful yellow fin tuna; this is the place to please your palate. Kids and adults alike will love the four cheese mac and cheese and the tomato basil soup, a modern twist on comfort food. Also great for a cool, casual date night that is sure to impress or light that old flame. The chef studied at the California Culinary Academy, hence the greatness in the soul food of Bradenton."

  • We had out of town, NYC, guests,

We had out of town, NYC, guests, we were celebrating a major birthday , we had worked all day, we were exhausted and hungry and we wanted to relax and eat well. SOMA, as usual, presented wonderful food and filled our needs and expectations. Our guests considered the meal exceptional. Bean soup was delicious and as always the crispy calamari salad was a table hit. For the first time of our many meals at Soma, I ordered and thoroughly enjoyed the Bento Box. SOMA is simply the best restaurant in Bradenton and I say that without any reservation.

Best Fried Green tomatoes anywhere. The entrees were good. I had the flounder and chips. I hail from the South Jersey shore the fish was good but definitely not flounder. If you dont use it just say "Fish and Chips" Skirt Steak good again but portions are small. There was enough spinach was a fork full. Service was OK but one person didn't cut it. We were getting service when there were only a few tables but more tables came in and we were abandoned. This needs to be corrected. I wil try one more time.

Great local place. Simple but nice decor. My friend said best shrimp and cheesy grits EVER, and she orders this entree when ever it is on a menu. Wine selection, modest in length, high in quality priced reasonable. Attentive friendly service. Look forward to returning soon.

  • I was surprised this restaurant
    OpenTable Diner Since 2012

I was surprised this restaurant was called a " Diner ", as it is anything but. Small menu, but good choice and wonderful food. The Malbec wine was exceptional and so was the service. The heat towards the back of the restaurant could use some adjustment, as it did become much hotter where we were sitting, than the front of the restaurant; where we noticed a considerable difference in coolness.

  • This was our second time dining
    OpenTable Diner Since 2012

This was our second time dining here and we were once again impressed with the whole experience. We had the dumplings and shrimp curry soup appetizers- both scored big in terms of taste and creativity. Our entrees (hanger steak and parmesan chicken) were equally impressive, especially when you consider that most area restaurants would charge considerably more for a comparable meal. Add in a cozy and romantic atmosphere and you have a restaurant that should be on everybody's bucket list.

  • It was Sat night, 7:30 reservations

It was Sat night, 7:30 reservations with out of town guests and SOMA was hopping. We were so pleased to see SOMA so busy. They were so crowded that we had to wait for our wine until they had some clean glasses. Not a problem for us ,as we dine at SOMA frequently because we always have fresh and delicious food here in a very relaxed, casual atmosphere. Our guests are real Southern folks (Alabama born and raised) and they loved one of our favorites , Fried Green Tomatoes. Bean soup was as tasty as ever. Short ribs were excellent. Love SOMA and can't say enough good things about the food.

AS always, Chef Shiplett's menu is eclectic, unusual and excellent. A bit noisy the night we were there with a guitarist only a couple of tables away from ours. Do try the Tiger Shrimp with Grits. Only big criticism is the the wooden chairs are a bit rough on the bottom, if you know what I mean. Could use some padding here for more comfortable dining. Otherwise, it is great. We have been many times.

  • SOMA, my local, little dining

SOMA, my local, little dining haunt that I consider fortunate to be located so close to where I live. The fried green tomatoes are always good but tonight they were exceptional. My crispy calamari salad was as good as always and tonight I realized it's the one dish I always order everytime we eat here. The bean soup was delicious. One diner's grouper was stellar and beyond generous in portion size. Once again it was a quiet night here;we were one of three tables and this little gem of a restaurant should be booming. SOMA offers some interestingly prepared dishes, creative cooking, good ingredients in a very laid back atmosphere at pleasntly affordable prices. Honestly, I would eat here weekly if I could afford to dine out once a week.

Great menu. Lots of flavor in every dish we tried. We had the short rib satay appetizer and the crispy calamari salad. Our entrees were tuna and wok fried shrimp and calamari with jasmine rice. All the dishes were wonderful. It's quaint and the chef came out to meet the guests. The prices are less than the larger well known restaurants in the area and the portions were generous. Can't wait to go back!!!

  • We were 5 people tonight and

We were 5 people tonight and we shared 3 appetizers: Fried Green Tomatoes. What a perfect start to the meal. 4 people ate the same entree, grouper and it was a contest of who enjoyed their meal better. I ate my favorite, The Crospy Calamri Salad and although I got full quickly, I ate the whole thing! SOMA is our Bradenton dining gem, just a few miles from our home and we have delighted in some nice, quiet meals here this Summer. Season is upon us and we will be happy to see SOMA filled to capacity. Bradenton/Palmetto residents, we need to support a local, small business and keep SOMA at the top of our list.

I have eaten here so many times, I want to keep tbis review simple: "Just Eat Here! Simple enough!" Bradenton people, if you are not eating here and supporting a small, local restaurant, shame on you. SOMA is not Olive Garden or Red Lobster. It's well prepared, unpretentious food from a cbef/owner who like to cook. One of our favorite dishes is Crispy Calamari Salad.

We eat here all the time and recently read a review that said when they eat at Soma, they always go home feeling greasy. Yes, there is a strong flat top smell that permeates Soma. Dave needs to get the kitchen exhaust system checked and probably install some smoke eaters to help with this problem. Tonight we had a very enthusiastic server that made the already delicious food even better. We shared spicy calamari, had the Shrimp Po Boy and Flounder Taco. A good glass of chilled Sauvignon Blanc, hot, delicious, well prepared food and a laid back, casual, relaxed atmosphere. What more for a good meal?

  • It was evident when we walked

It was evident when we walked in that Soma was busier than expected and that the restaurant was short staffed. We told our server that we were in no rush but little did we expect to wait 20 minutes for a glass of water. Ordered a bottle of sauvignon blanc and they were out of what we wanted. It took forever to get our appetizer order placed and by this time we did our best to not be annoyed as we were happy to see Soma busy. They should have been prepared as it was a Saturday night. One out of three appetizers was wrong but politely and promptly handled. The food: as delicious, interesting, well prepared as we expected. So, a rough night here service wise but as usual, some really good food.

  • If you are looking for fancy

If you are looking for fancy decor and decorator atmosphere, Soma is not the place. If you want some well prepared, fresh ingredients from an ever changing chef/owner planned menu then dine at Soma. Every time we have dinner hear we say Soma should remove the word diner from their sign as the food is interestingly prepared, amply portioned and well above diner quality. On the other hand, the word diner is appropriate for Soma's pricing. If food so delicious, with such interesting ingredients and painstaking preparation were served in a fancier atmosphere it would be much more expensive. Some favorites: Calamari Salad, crab cake, mac and cheese. We eat here all the time as it is close to home and always have a good meal.

  • We just love this very eclectic,

We just love this very eclectic, odd location restaurant. The place is tiny, funky, unusual so if you are looking for high end decor and knock your socks off ambiance then you picked the wrong place. If you want to be laid back, casually dressed and you want to still dine well, then we highly recommend SoMa. As typical of my husband and myself we dined on shared appetizers and each one weas more interesting and flavorful than the next. The calamari tossed salad was my favorite. My husband, raised poor and southern, does not eat fried green tomatoes. We shared a plate of FGT and it was my husbands favorite appaetizer of the evening. Satay skirt steak was chewy (ever have skirt steak that was less than chewy?) but so flavorful. EAT HERE
