Diner Reviews
  • "The appealing cool, contemporary decor of Solo Bistro is a nice foil for the sophisticated versions of comfort food served here. Tomato soup is punched up with red pepper; grilled salmon flavored with miso and sake is served atop a bed of perfectly smashed potatoes; and the brownie is rum raisin, not chocolate, and perfect. The chef produces these dishes and more from a very small, but efficient kitchen. Kudos to all involved."

  • "Solo Bistro is our Go To restaurant whenever we have something to celebrate, or just need a little break to relax and feel pampered. The food is great, and just gets better. I like the emphasis on farm to table, and the interesting flavor combinations. The service is impeccable, very professional and warm. It's always a pleasure to watch the kitchen from our favorite table, and enjoy the modern, bustling vibe. Thank you so much for creating a lovely spot!"

  • "what a special treat in Bath- this place rocks. the duck was to die for, the chocolate mousse dessert was heavenly. the service, ambiance, menu and cocktail/wine lists were definitely fit-for-foodies. would go back in a second!"

  • "We were here a few weeks ago and had a good meal and fine service. This time both were lacking."

  • "This was our second visit to Solo. The food here is wonderful, inventive, flavorful. I had a bluefish special that was unlike any bluefish dish I have previously had -- delicate flavor, wonderful sauce, absolutely first-rate. The accompanying jazz (a vocalist and guitarist) was perfect with dinner, and made an enjoyable evening even more so. We will continue to patronize this wonderful restaurant on every visit to this area of the Maine coast."

  • "We return to Bath every year for one night and make a special point to eat here. It's consistently good. The food is incredible. A great great place. Highly recommend."

  • "We met some old friends who were visiting in Maine and went to Solo Bistro for dinner. The food was superb. The service was perfect. We talked and talked over dinner. We were the last to leave the restaurant and the staff very discreetly was closing for the evening without ever interrupting our after dinner conversation."

  • "Many of our friends have driven long distance to dine here, and we are so lucky to have it nearby! Lovely setting, locavore flavor, and good shops to walk around and browse in afterwards. Also near the Kennebec river park in Bath, for a further stroll. Highly recommend for people heading up the coast. Just off route 1."

  • "I used to enjoy your lunches more a few years ago. I like the ambience, your staff is very present and knowledgeable, you have a good wine list. But the lunch menu is lacking: first of all, any lunch menu needs very good bread--a French baguette or Italian crusty peasant. A dish of moules frites without good bread is unthinkable. Your sandwiches should be more down to earth, served on good sandwich bread: this time my skimpy sautéed salmon came on a kind of dinner roll, of which one half was coated with an undistinguished sauce. I get the impression, that in your kitchen sugar takes the place of good seasoning and fresh herbs. We were a table of four, and we all objected to skimpy servings with the above mentioned shortcomings."

  • "With a Swedish-style decor--colorful and simple--and fresh, delicious food, this was a surprising find for Bath, Maine. We stayed at the 1774 Inn in Phippsburg and the proprietors recommended it as a contrast to the ubiquitous fried seafood restaurants and lobster rolls. They were right! There is a great wine list and good variety, from fish to vegan entrees. There is a wine bar on the lower level. We were pleasantly surprised and would definitely return here in the future!"

  • "We rent a cottage on Popham Beach and by dat four we're looking for alternatives to lobster and seafood. Solo Bistro more than fit the bill. Went with my aunt who frequents the best restaurants in NYC (ie, Del Posto) and she said Solo Bistro was absolutely wonderful. We had lunch the day before at Eventide in Portland. Beautifully presented halibut special for mr, duck for her. Wonderful cheese plate with local cheeses including one made by our delightful server"

  • "After having heard reports about the gourmet cuisine in of all places, Bath, Maine, we decided to book a dinner for a Tuesday night when it would not be expected to be overly crowded. It was obvious that neither the kitchen nor the wait staff could handle a full house. After being seated we ordered appetizers, entrees and a bottle of Malbec. The salads came out within a reasonable period of time. Then we waited, and waited and waited while our server was watching our table and others while we watched the servers running from kitchen to basement. After 50 minutes, we flagged down our waitress and asked about the delay. She confirmed our suspicions-they couldn't handle the volume. Needless to say, we will not go back."

  • "My husband & I have found that Solo Bistro never disappoints. My dish was specially created for me by the chef and was so delicious that I ate it very slowly, to make it last as long as absolutely possible. The artichoke lent a unique flavor to the other ingredients that raised the level of the entire experience another notch. Our wait staff was attentive and added a personal message to our dessert- a "Happy Anniversary" message written in elegant script right on the serving plate- a lovely touch! My husband said his meal was fabulous, and his chocolate mousse the best he'd ever had. We will be back soon!"

  • "This was a last minute recommendation. The food was excellent and the waitstaff attentive. Just remember that Bath rolls up it's streets early on the weeknights so I don't recommend any arrival past 8pm"

  • "This was our second time at Solo Bistro, and I ordered the salmon. It came and was absolutely black on top. I took one bite and it was completely burned. I honestly cannot believe a restaurant of this caliber would let something leave the kitchen looking like that! Did they think I would not notice? I sent it back, and two people apologized to me and told me the chef was sorry. I just feel it was unacceptable to present something that was obviously burned. Yes, the new one was fine, but it really made me not want to return."

  • "Enjoyed it so much that we returned for a second night. Duck breast was amazing, as was the butter-poached lobster. Highly recommended. Indeed, if you're near Bath, Maine, don't miss it!"

  • "Met a friend for brunch who had not been to Solo Bistro before. Got an email from her later saying she had been raving to her husband about her meal all afternoon. Good job!"

  • "We had dinner on a Friday evening which also allowed us to hear a small live jazz due perform. Two of our party had the nightly special- 3 courses for $25- such an amazing value for fine dining. Even if you are not staying in Bath (which I do highly recommend), Solo Bistro is worth making a side trip for."

  • "Highest quality, imaginative, delicious food served by friendly, knowledgeable staff in pleasant, unpretentious surroundings. Our very favorite restaurant."

  • "We had heard good things about Solo Bistro and were disappointed. It took about 45 minutes to prepare the food we ordered - the price fixed special and a fancy hamburger -not food you would expect to take this long. The house salad was nothing special, although I did appreciate that it was dressed lightly. The tomato was not farm fresh. The coq au vin was fair - not particularly flavorful. The fancy hamburger was ordered medium rare and was served rare to raw. It was returned for further cooking and after about 15 minutes was re-served as rare as before. For a restaurant of this caliber this should not have happened. We welcome creative restaurants in Bath and hope Solo Bistro finds our review helpful and improves."

  • "We love Solo Bistro but we're disappointed they were out off two staple menu items, swordfish, and creme brûlée. That was for a 6:30 resi and a place known for ships, sea, and fish? Eggs, cream, sugar? Hello"

  • "We enjoyed an early evening (6 p.m.) dinner on a Tuesday night so things were quiet. We had salads (the house and the Ceaser) and both were delicious and fresh- the foccacia bread was tender and excellent. For entrees we had the scallops and the swordfish and both were perfectly cooked. We asked the waitperson for wine recommendations for each (glass) and she came back with two whites for us to taste, both recommended by the owner as good with our meal choices. We ended the meal with the chocolate mousse tart (we shared) and that was outstanding as well. We will definitely add this to our small list of favorites."

  • "On our way Downeast to Lubec from NJ each summer, we meet longtime friends for dinner at Solo Bistro. The food is always wonderful, the service relaxed and congenial but professional. The menu is full of enticing options so it's hard to make a choice. We're sorry we can only go to Solo once a year!"

  • "We enjoyed a last minute dinner here, while travelling through Bath on a Sunday evening. What a wonderful menu and delightful place! Solo Bistro has been on the food scene for many years but it was a first for my husband and a second time for me. We started with a cheese board and enjoyed the variety, presentation and flavors. My husband had the steak frites (a very generous serving). I had the salmon - it was deliciously prepared with a squash puree. Our meals were attractive, tasty and inventive without being too edgy. For dessert we shared a mango sorbet and a key lime pie. While the mango sorbet was on the prix fixe menu, the wait staff accommodated my request. Highly recommended great restaurant in wonderful downtown Bath."

  • "There are no negative comments to make about this restaurant. This restaurant is solid, delivering food that is tasty without being trendy, well done without being overdone. In a town that has local charm to spare but that is a permanent state of culinary draught, it was a pleasure to discover Solo Bistro. The service was attentive, the setting lighthearted with bright color furnishing and the food delicious. Those that "are from away" as Mainers call us will recognize food they have tasted before. No big discovery but much appreciated for a thoughtful execution. May Solo inspire others to join them in giving Bath a bit of a restaurant scene to convince folks heading to Portland to stop here instead."

  • "Some places strive to look good but fall short when the food arrives. We have been wanting to dine here for some time. The decor is very nice, modern upscale with attention to detail like glassware and utensils. The food and presentation were up to the task and obviously got as much attention in both the planning and preparation. A nice affordable wine list was quite welcome."

  • "We have eaten at Solo Bistro twice. The food is outstanding, the service is excellent, and the experience has been great both times. I had the fish special (redfish), my wife had steak frites, and my daughter had the salmon. The oysters on the evening we had dinner there were from Damariscotta, melted in your mouth. Don't miss this place if you are anywhere near Portland. It's worth the short drive to Bath."

  • "What an awful dining experience this was in every way….I had been to SOLO BISTRO several years ago for dinner with family members….I was very unimpressed with the SMALL portions and EXPENSIVE prices….It was much ado about nothing….All five members of our party were disappointed and shocked that prices were high and the quality and quantity of the food was awful…..We decided to give SOLO BiSTRO a second try on Tuesday afternoon June 17th….My low expectations of SOLO BISTRO were met…..We all felt like victims of a rip-off….Firstly, we had a surly and pretentious waitress who disappeared, never to be seen again..She was replaced by another waitress….Small portions of stale food was served…Awful experience!!"

  • "The food and service were both outstanding, and the night I was there with guests the music was provided by saxophonist Ralph Norris and keyboardist Mickey Felder. What a great treat to hear one of the great saxophonists in New England while enjoying such a wonderful meal."

  • "We had a superb meal (swordfish) at Solo Bistro. The flavors blended well, but each item on the plate had its own delectable essence. For conservation reasons we hadn't eaten swordfish in about 20 years, so we were particularly excited to try this former favorite that has made a fair recovery in the Gulf of Maine."

  • "Cozy atmosphere. Our scallops and the swordfish were outstanding. Creative combinations of complementary sides. Service outstanding as well. Special notice of our anniversary was taken with a perfect table and surprise treat at the end. Loved the music. Definitely will be back. "

  • "The food, drinks, service, and atmosphere were all lovely but the brunch portions were quite small. The French toast came with one piece and the goat cheese crepes left me ready for a second breakfast. Order some affordable sides to go with your meal. "

  • "Went to Solo Bistro for our anniversary. Ambiance more like a cafeteria than an upscale restaurant. Cheese plate ($14.00) literally had two pieces of cheese each approx. 1''x1 1/2 inches with one bite of salad. My Grilled Duck Breast was very good, but my husbands Mushroom Risotto had so many different herbs in it, you couldn't taste the subtlety of the mushrooms and rice. Our Parfait dessert was different and very good."

  • "Food and service were outstanding. The restaurant was very busy and unfortunately we were seated next to a large party, which made the noise level high and difficult to easily communicate with each other. A note for anyone with any vision problems, the lighting is limited so while this adds to the ambience, it makes it very challenging for those with any vision issues."
