Diner Reviews
  • "I booked reservations here for a couples' night out with some friends before a show. I'd read reviews on too little food for the price, and thought those people were just being picky. I don't have a big appetite, but I was surprised to see how tiny the tapas portions were. We ordered several dishes and each got a spoonful or so of each plate. Thank goodness we ordered a paella, or our stomachs would have been growling through the show. The food was tasty, but I have to agree that it was too tiny. It was an experience, but not worth going back for."

  • "First time to the restaurant following a recommendation. The food was excellent and the service was outstanding. We will definitely return to enjoy again."

  • "This past Friday we had a group of eight visit Solera. The tapas menu I knew and loved from years ago was gone. The number of menu selections was more like Chipotle then a thriving tapas restaurant. The tapas was good but not overly impressive. The prices didn't match the portion. For a Friday night, Solera was less then full leaving the atmosphere more weekday suburban then weekend urban. Strangely, on Open Table reservations were not available. Marketing ploy? The restaurant scene is always an ebb and flow of trends. Solera once a leader, seems to have gone to the end of the batting order. For our party of eight it was just okay. We left content but unfulfilled and unlikely to return in the future. Thanks for the memories!"

  • "The food is different and very good. It's all small plates and expensive for what you get."

  • "I have been to this restaurant many times and it is always very good and very accommodating for theatre goers. I had a chicken liver pate that was part of a larger cheese type tray --that was absolutely outstanding. It should be sold/served as an option all on its own. True tapas, which I love, and our waiter was very well versed and helped us pick a good wine. Great dining experience."

  • "Spent some time in Spain, enjoyed tapas dining. In Spain tapas dining doesn't mean tiny food on a tiny plate. It was great food, usually with a tasty sauce, mounded on a smaller plate. Enough to share between 2-3 people. We tried 5-6 tapas and 1 large dish at Solera. All tasted great, but most were presented and plated as if for one person as an appetizer. It was a pleasant dinner, but not really a good tapas experience."

  • "Extremely slow and unfriendly service on a Saturday night. Also small portions and expensive. Not a good restaurant on a busy night. The food took over an hour and a half to be brought to the table so there was no time to order more food! Spent two and a half hours here. Avoid."

  • "We had a great cheese plate with lots of different pairings (apricot spread, mustards, liver pate, pickled cucumber and bell pepper, etc), a great mushroom dish, excellent scallops!!, great potato bites with dipping sauce. We had the quail which was good but not as unique as the other items. For dessert, wonderful a chocolate and peanut butter plate. And of course, the red house sangria! The service was also excellent! They are very friendly, really know the menu, and can describe the menu items well."

  • "We've yet to have even an average dish at Solera. Recommended very highly!"

  • "lots of theatres nearby, good pre show. Needs acoustical treatment to cut down on noise."

  • "Every single taste was better than the one before! We enjoyed our meal from start to end. We plan to return often. What a gem of a restaurant! Our experience was enhanced by our fabulous service, Matthew. Matthew was personable, attentive, and spot-on with recommendations. He is the type of server that makes a great restaurant become a superior restaurant. Thank you for a memorable dinner . . ."

  • "Tapas is great. We were seated at 6 and left at 7:20 . The staff knows if you are headed to a show and they get you in and out accordingly. Everything was great. The duck dish was so beautiful I just had to sit and look at it for several minutes. It was truly a work of art. Only downside of our visit was that our server was a bit loud and perhaps overrehearsed. Minor issue. Solera is not inexpensive though. You'll strain to find a decent bottle of wine under $50, don't let those $10-$15 item prices lull you you...youll need two or three per person to enjoy yourself. But a great pre-theater dining experience."

  • "Not a very good meal at all. The Paella used to be delicious and unfortunately now mostly consists of rice instead of seafood and sausage. The whole meal was disappointing and I don't think I'll be back."

  • "Although the food is very good it also is very expensive for what you get! Our server was probably one of the best I have had in years! He was fun, efficient, very knowledgeable about everything from drinks to the entire menu. He did not try and up sell us anything and was very honest. That being said, they were not extremely busy yet for a Saturday night, and he did have a lot of people helping him with water, the delivery of the food in a very nice pace, and just making sure we were all being taken care of the entire time we were there!! I will definitely be going back!!"

  • "We had a great! The food was fabulous. My only complaint, and it really is minor, it was too warm in the restaurant. Not a deal breaker by any means, but worth noting."

  • "Solera has a select list of tapas (see its website for the menu), but all we tried were excellent. The emphasis seemed more on new, creative approaches to tapas than having all the traditional tapas we have found at other restaurants. The wine list gave good coverage to the different regions of Spain. Our waiter was quite knowledgeable about both the food and the wines. The tapas were brought one at a time, not all at once, allowing for appreciation of each and a chance to get ready for the next one."

  • "We were there on Valentine's Day, and our meal and service was great--as it always it. Unfortunately, our evening concluded poorly with a very unhelpful manager and a frustrating situation with the valet. For some reason we, and many other guests, waited over a half hour to get our cars from the valet, and the manager did nothing but say he would follow up later with the company who runs the valet. What was most irksome was his complete inability to find a creative solution to the problem. There were at least five couples crowded into the entrance as new diners arrived. No offer of a coffee and a seat at the bar, not even a show of a conversation with the valet service. A few simple gestures would have gone a long way to solving this."

  • "I have lived in and traveled around Spain extensively so am not easy to please with Spanish restaurants. I did really enjoy this place, has tasty dishes, mostly authentic in flavor and with good ingredients. For example they do have jamón ibérico of a fine quality, use good olives and cheeses. A few dishes, notable patatas bravas did not match what you can get all over Spain but we were a big group, tried a lot of things on the menu, and had a good time, which is the point."

  • "That was the most over priced food I have ever eaten. Tiny portions."

  • "Everytime I go to Solera, they knock it out of the park. No other experience in the TC Metro is like it. Not that there aren't other great restaurants, this is just unique to the cities. Will be back many more times!"

  • "Excellent wine, food preparation and service. Great for pre or after show dining."

  • "Tapas - small plates - is a very different type of dining experience. As a couple, we ordered 4 dishes, that came out 1 at a time as they were ready. Everything was very good: the meat & cheese appetizer plate was set up in pairings that worked quite well, the scallops were superb, as were the mushrooms, and the rabbit dish was very nice too. Our waiter knew first hand every item on the menu as well as every specialty drink. The selection of sangrias is large, and we enjoyed the one he recommended. The front room with the bar is a bit loud, and we were glad to have been seated in the back dining area where you can converse at normal volumes."

  • "Good atmosphere, good food, quick, friendly - next to or close to all major theaters on Hennepin."

  • "We dined before a show at the Orpheum. Tasty food, including the bacon wrapped dates and baked goat cheese. The paella was good (not great). Prices are a little high for what you get. The service was good after the entire party arrived, but my friend waited 20 minutes to be served her first drink while she waited for us. We enjoyed the atmosphere and intend to return to try more of their small plates."

  • "Tried to get into Fogo for my group of 6, but the Saturday of Valentine's Day weekend is pretty tough. Availability at Solera was much more open. Solera of course is a much different experience, but it's easier on the wallet, and it's small plates/tapas style similarly allows for trying many different items. For steak lovers the 32 oz ribeye that serves 2-4 is a good option. The meat paella with chorizo was excellent as were the the roasted peppers and the octopus. Really, everything was excellent, and the service was outstanding. Recommended."

  • "We came the night after Valentine's Day. The service was good, especially for a Saturday. We were surprised how it cleared out by 9:00! Highlights included the Jamon, duck, scallops, and the roasted mushrooms. The tuna belly was canned tuna with canned beans...Spanish yes, yummy, meh. Desserts were great. Churros were piping hot, crispy and sugary. If you are hungry and want to try several things and have wine, be prepared for a $200 bill for 2. But it was a nice change of pace on a cold night."

  • "My wife and I enjoyed our meal at Solera. We had several small plates, and they were all very good. The tapas format gets spendy. The duck was amazing but came with only two slices of duck for $14. To order another round would make it $28 for about half a duck breast. The bacon-wrapped dates we also very good. Everything was consistently delicious, but nothing was really exceptional. Our server was outgoing, nice and well-informed, but we didn't see him enough once the food started coming out. Food runners brought all of our plates out, so we had to call for a server a few times to get new drinks and request the check. I think that part of the problem is the format of the restaurant, but he could have been a little more attentive."

  • "We searched out Solera specifically for their reputation for great Paella! - Wow, we were not disappointed. We had the pleasure of enjoying Paella at a backyard gathering with some friends from Spain and loved it. The Paella at Solera was just as good! We will definitely go back again. The waitress had a very good knowledge of a great red wine to go along with this dish and we had a perfect pre-Valentine's Day experience."

  • "We grabbed five different tapas items off the menu and tried a couple of their cocktails. The food was all very good. I'd had potatas bravas in Spain and loved them. These weren't quite at that level, but close. The pork belly was muy bueno, and the crotuettas were also fantastic. The cocktails were also spot on, with some great use of a variety of ingredients. Unfortunately, the service was so slow. Our server would often pop by and say "I'll be right back" and then be gone for - I don't know - 10 to 20 minutes. With just five tapas items, we were there for 2+ hours. Which is too long. We probably would have had one more tapas or a dessert but had devoured several baskets of bread while we waited (and waited), so we were stuffed."
