  • We like to share plates. Perfect!

I met a good friend for dinner late one Sunday. We enjoyed bubbles at the bar and watched a few moments of a football game. We moved to the dining area and began our quest for plates to share. The staff was quite accommodating, even serving the shared beet salad on separate plates. Our server helped us select a wine for the various plates we ordered. It was a delicious choice for the variety of tastes.

  • Somewhat disappointing this visit

We've reviewed before and felt like this is the best restaurant in the North Valley. It still is. A recent visit was somewhat less satisfactory than prior visits. A battered shrimp appetizer was a little oily and pork tenderloin, ordered medium, was on the tough side. Other dishes, including an autumn chopped salad, salmon and steak and short rib, were terrific, so this is only a negative review by comparison. We've also gotten terrific thoughtful advice on wine in the past. On this visit, with a somewhat more modest budget in mind, we felt that the waiter did not give much consideration to the list and our interests, and also sold us right up to the maximum dollar limit we had in mind as opposed to making a few suggestions. I'll note that markups here are slightly under typical 2x retail, but only slightly, and well over half the list is in the +100 range, making it pricey.

The staff at Solbar is excellent, the food outstanding and the setting truly beautiful. Solbar has been consistently one of the best restaurants in the wine country thanks to the inventiveness and skill of the chef and his team. All of the dishes we have ever enjoyed at Solbar are made with the very best ingredients and prepared with finesse.

After day of visiting vineyards of the Napa Valley, my wife and I anticipated a good meal and a good bottle of wine to finish off the day. While we had heard of the Solbar's reputation for good food, we were most impressed with the quality of the food and reasonableness of the price. This was one of the best meals we have had in years, and at a price we found hard to believe. This is a must visit for anyone in the Napa Valley area. A great wine selection was a added bonus to the excellent dinner. We plan to visit agains as son as we can.

Met friends for dinner and ordered a variety of starters, mains and deserts. All were quite good, so I have no hesitation recommending Solbar and would happily return. It is a bit noisy, so perhaps not an ideal romantic location. We certainly enjoyed everything from food to service, but it didn't quite rise to the level of excellence that would prompt five stars.

Our first visit to Solbar was a treat. The patio seating was very comfortable even on a hot day (a canopy of trees provided shade). Lovely, relaxing setting. Tried a "pear-way to heaven" cocktail before lunch. It was scrumptious! We both chose the squash veloute (soup) as a starter. Loved it. The flavors and the creamy texture were outstanding. For the main course, I had the lamb gyro. An untraditional preparation - open faced on naan bread, mixed with a cucumber yogurt tzatziki - plus a bright bulghur salad on the side. Surprisingly light / very tasty. My friend enjoyed the duck banh mi sandwich. Great, also light, pumpkin torte for dessert. Attentive and helpful service from Ramon et al. We'll return for meals / drinks.

Went there after a day of touring the wine country. It was dark when we arrived, but the grounds appeared to be very beautiful. The setting is very tranquil, with lots of running water and fire pits. We chose to eat outside even though it was chilly. There are lots of heaters and fire pits to keep you warm. The service was good. I had the pre fix "fried chicken special with 3 sides". The chicken was dry. The sides were OK. My first course was a salad of some sort, not very memorable. My friend had the steak which was pretty good. His egg appetizer was extrordinarly good. The place seemed large and rather disjointed. Not sure I'd go back.

From the appetizers to desert Solbar did not disappoint. The oysters were delicious, chicken was like butter and desert was the perfect end to the meal! The service was outstanding! They were very understanding when we were running a few minutes behind due to car service. We never felt rushed - and always had what we needed! This is a must place to visit while in Calistoga. It was cooler and a bit later but I am sure the outdoor seating would be great as well. There was a wedding reception while we were there and it looked beautiful!!!

Shrimp tempura was very heavy and greasy. The combination was well thought out but executed poorly based on the tempura. Service was very friendly but too fast. No time to enjoy anything. Once we were served dinner we didn't see our server again for quite a while as it had gotten busy. Because our first experience a few days earlier was excellent in all areas we would still recommend this restaurant.

We dined at SolBar for our anniversary and were disappointed. We arrived early to have a cocktail to find a big group of loud people watching football on the bar television. We waited 25 minutes for our cocktails to arrive. They were already made, sitting on the counter and never delivered. The restaurant and bar are in one room so acoustics are terrible, especially with screaming fans fifteen feet away from our table. Service was terrible. The waiter discussed our wine selection in detail but it was not delivered until our third course. In summary…the football watchers screamed the whole time (like a neighborhood dive bar) there was a complete lack of service and mediocre food. It’s shocking that they have a Michelin star!

The food was Ok, interesting and of the good quality. I like the way they did the menu. But the service was not properly made. It was too fast and unmatched food and wine delivery. However the staff was friendly. The atmosphere is totally ruined everything. People wearing shorts, screaming and laughing ladies, baseball on TV and no background music at all made me feel like in a pub not in 1-star restaurant.

I was here with two friends for a day trip on 10/12/14. We went to the spa and had a noon reservation. Before even checking-in with the hostess, you could feel the vibe was off. Servers seemed frazzled as groups of clients waited to be seated. We asked to be seated outside, and they had to bring an additional table outside to accommodate us. We were seated, and two other tables beside us were seated after us. We were left with a food menu; there was no water and no drink menu. We sat..and sat...and sat. Surprising for a Michelin star rated restaurant. My patience weened as we saw that servers had come to to the tables seated after us...it was obvious that we were upset when our server did come. Luckily, the food made up for the service.

Went for 20th anniversary. At reception, there was no greeting, no smile, just raised eyebrows. We were then ushered to a table between 2 occupied tables about 3 inches away on either side. I asked if we could be seated at one of the other unoccupied tables & the answer was NO. Those tables remained unoccupied until about 1 hour into our meal. Sitting so close to others was not enjoyable especially when other tables were available. 2 days later we went back as part of a hot air balloon excursion. When our guide checked in for our reservation (as he does every single day of the week with other groups) they indicated we would have to wait 45 min to an hour. No apologies. He was really angry. We didn't stay. Won't go back due to disservice.
