A word from Solaire Restaurant + Bar
Whether it be a cocktail while soaking up the sun at the poolside bar, an
expertly prepared meal, or a spirited conversation at the bar, Solaire
Restaurant + Bar offers the best of what is available with the changing
seasons.

Solaire offers a truly local dining destination that offers unexpected and
offbeat twists on local ingredients and flavors. The atmosphere of the
seasonal restaurant changes based on the weather—in the warm weather
months it is a playful experience centered on the indoor/outdoor bar and
the vibrant pool scene and in the foggier months guests can cozy up to the
fireplace or by a fire pit while enjoying a cocktail. Mirroring the laid-back attitude of Santa Cruz, the restaurant and bar incorporate the natural elements of the water, sky and fire in imaginative and modern ways.

Sink your teeth into fresh farm-to-table American comfort food at our Solaire Restaurant + Bar.

Diner Reviews
  • "For an expensive restaurant, the service was like that of a cheap diner. We were told to save our forks between courseseven thought they were dirty had little plastic cups for water instead of glass (for a $39 brunch!) and were ignored unless we specifically asked for something. Its a pretty place and the food was pretty good but the attitude was discouraging. "

  • "Fantastic food with impeccable service. However, we went to dinner during NBA playoffs. There is no separation between bar and dining. We could not have the romantic dinner we were hoping for and may be possible at others times when the Warriors are playing. I'd give it another try at hopefully a less boisterous time. Recommendation to management: sound mitigation."

  • "This was not our first visit to Solaire, but this time we had guests (potential clients) from out of town. These people are used to dining in the finest restaurants around the world, so they are not easy to impress. However, they were delighted to find a great selection of wine, amazingly delicious food, and outstanding customer service. Thanks to the staff and management for doing such a great job. Their efforts ensured that everyone in our party enjoyed a delightful evening. We will definitely be returning again, and again. "

  • "Loved the poolside privacy and the discretion of the wait staff. Food was good, company was better. We'll be back, maybe for an entire afternoon. . ."

  • "My wife and I took 2 new friends out for dinner in Santa Cruz... we initially went to a place I remembered from many years ago, but it had closed down. I scrambled on Open Table to find something decent, reserved at Solaire trusting a few reviews and off we went. The food was great. Service was great. Presentation was great. Atmosphere was great. We really couldn't ask for a better experience. My only issue was that, since it was part of the Paradox hotel complex, the walk from the front of the hotel was confusing and not the best way in... go around the side next time, got it. Very expensive, but no real complaint there as the meal was excellent all around. We'll stop-in again when we're in Santa Cruz."

  • "I had the special halibut (mar 29) perfectly done, crisp on outside, moist inside. But it was on a bed of black beans, corn, peas and red pepper which tasted like they just opened a can of beans. The chef needs more imagination, like a flavorful sauce, some herbs, or something. The overall dish was just plain boring."

  • "Next time I'll call to make sure we won't be dining at the same time as a loud party of celebrants raising funds. The noise made our dining experience less enjoyable than on past occasions."

  • "I am generally very "low maintenance" and tend to enjoy most restaurants. I chose Solaire because of the great reviews on Open Table. It was difficult to find as it is attached to a hotel. We started with the cauliflower gratin. It was good but not amazing. The goat cheese and beet salad with salmon was quite delicious. We ordered the risotto as our main dish and only ate a few bites. I love risotto and this was terrible. The mushroom sauce on the top was overbearing and did not mix well with the overwhelming taste of parmesan in the risotto. I will say that the cocktails were fantastic! I had the lemon drop and my sister had the martini with cucumber in it. Both were delicious. Overall, I will not return here."

  • "A friend recommended that I check this restaurant out. Made a reservation and got there but had to wait about 15 minutes for a table. No biggie. The bartender seemed flustered as the bar was full and he was doing drinks for the tables so it took a while for our drinks. The drinks were excellent. We were then seated at a lovely booth. I chose the salmon and my friend chose the sirloin (ordered medium rare). The presentation of food was great. Unfortunately salmon was raw in the middle but most of it was edible. The steak was well-done and charred on the outside. Both disappointing. I probably wouldn't go back except for a drink at the bar. Too bad."

  • "Mediocre food served very slowly. The waitress forgot our soup and salad course and had to be reminded. By the time the entree arrived an hour later we just boxed it and left."

  • "I booked a reservation through Open Table at Solaire Restaurant for Valentine's day dinner. The decor is quite modern and the ceiling in the main dining room is imprinted with sky and trees. The cocktails were quite good and unusual. My fiancee and I decided to order the prix fixe special dinner which was excellent. My steak was cooked perfectly and her truffle pasta was excellent. Our desserts were delightful."

  • "My seafood dishes were cooked perfectly and locally sourced. The quality of all the dishes at our table met our high standards."

  • "We loved our dinner at Solaire! The food got better with every course. I especially enjoyed the Tomato Basil soup and chocolate mousse cake. Our server Laura was friendly and helpful. Overall, a great experience!"

  • "We've been saying we should try this restaurant for dinner ever since it opened, but it just wasn't on our radar when we'd be choosing where to go. We drove by on Friday and decided to go that night and it was great! The food was delicious, the ambiance was lovely - very pared down decor with a fireplace near our table, perfect for a rainy night. We will definitely be back soon."

  • "Although we were there for thanksgiving, there is a great indoor/outdoor bar. A fun atmosphere for hotel and restaurant guests. The pre-fix menu was good, chef had nice selections to choose from, excellent risotto. Would go again."

  • "We treated our small party of six to a feast without the stress of shopping, cooking and cleaning up. The pre fixe dinner was superb and plentiful -- usually two words that signify less than excellent but not in this case. No point going into details since it was a holiday menu, but our group of sophisticated world travelers all give this big thumbs up. We will be back before the next holiday,"

  • "Had dinner on a Friday evening. Our server was informative about our questions with the menu and attentive throughout the meal. Ordered Crab Firecrackers appetizer-very good. Ginger dipping sauce was a bit over powering and had a different texture. I had Shrimp and Grits. This dish has bacon lardons (gave it a great smokey flavor), the grits are white cheddar polenta. While the shrimp with sauce over the grits was flavorful the polenta itself was very bland, no cheddar flavor at all. No taste whatsoever so I had to stir it all together for flavor. Husband ordered the Roasted Half Chicken. with roasted asparagus, roasted potatoes, cipollini onions and mushrooms. Very good flavor! My Lemon Ginger Martini was excellent! We'll be back."

  • "Random decision to eat here at Solaire and we were very pleased!! We got there early (right when dinner was starting) so service was very prompt (we cannot speak to what service would be like when it is busy busy!!). The decor & vibe is really great and the food was absolutely DIVINE!! HUGE compliments to the chef!! We had the beet salad as an appetizer then the risotto, gnocchi, & halibut for entrees ... there is nothing else to say except ... WOW!! Mouth watering ever bite!! We will definitely be going back!"

  • "This restaurant is a wonderful new addition to the fine dining scene in Santa Cruz. The food is excellent--the succotash on the diver scallops was the best we had ever had. The vanilla pana cotta is superb. The design that went into the restaurant and the hotel is outstanding. We were pleasantly pleased with our dinners. We'll be back for more and will likely do a staycation at the hotel."

  • "My husband and I have been here several times and enjoyed ourselves. I wanted to take my special friend to celebrate her 80plus birthday. She is a native of Santa Cruz and felt if she liked the changes to this hotel and restaurant I would have a hot! Well she loved our lunch. The service was very gracious and the response to our needs was immediate. We were not rushed and enjoyed sitting in the sun by the pool. The food was just delicious! My friend was surprised that such a pretty spot could be right of the main road into town...she will be back and I will booking another meal soon."

  • "Even though the name of this restaurant contains the word "bar" in it. It is not a bar. It is a Wine bar. No drinks except wine drinks. When I went the place was mostly empty yet they seated everyone right next to each other. In fact right between two exceedingly loud tables."

  • "Great place to eat dinner. Food was excellent. Best clam chowder I have ever had. Service was great. Will go back for sure. Recommend this restaurant to all."

  • "We enjoyed a fantastic 2 night stay at the Paradox Hotel and had breakfast each day at their restaurant, Solaire. How can you beat crab cake eggs benedict for breakfast. Delicious! Fresh squeezed orange juice was also a treat. We also enjoyed happy hour at the Solaire bar. Needless to say, a great stay and good eating. We look forward to a return trip soon."

  • "Our party of four had an overall great sampling of food (steak, pork, shell fish, fish) and everybody thoroughly enjoyed their food. The service was outstanding, the ambiance lovely. A combination of modern, sheik. The only thing that was missing was a full bar. But, according to the waiter, they should be getting their full liquor license in just a matter of weeks. I highly recommend Solaire & will definitely be coming back."

  • "We were staying at the Paradox Hotel (we highly recommend it) and had breakfast at their restaurant (Solaire). We got our day off to a great start. The coffee is excellent as was the breakfast. A friendly and accommodating staff helps. Thanks for a great time and we wish you all good luck with this newly opened hotel. My wife and I look forward to our next visit to Santa Cruz and the Paradox."

  • "Enter sellection is limited, but very good in preparation and quality. Restaurant has a notable wine list, but was still obtaining hard liquor license. Fish and vegetables were cooked to perfection, ambiance was great, very good experience."

  • "Need full bar, however bartender does great, handling job for two people Making creative infused drinks. Service slow for a non busy time. Love the indoor outdoor feeling. Could use a really good steak, rib eye or porterhouse. The sirloin was not great, we are meat people. They gave us a complimentary dessert that was beautiful but inedible because wafers were stale. Good efforts but no good rhythm here yet. Will try again when full liquor license operating. Pool scene looks fun"

  • "This is a real gem and what an improvement over the previous restaurant that was at the same location several years ago before the hotel was the Paradox. The food is excellent, and the wine and drink list good although they do not as yet have a liquor license. The meals are fairly priced but not what you would call a bargain. There is a range of dishes offered for all tastes and the appetizer we tried (calamari) was excellent with the restaurant's own special touch. We went there for our son's 25th birthday, and it was a perfect choice."
    Dined on 4/5/2013
  • "We have eaten here several times. We were delighted with the local ingredients carefully and delightfully prepared. This last time was terribly disappointing. The gnocchi were unedible, the risotto not much better. My clam chowder tasted thrown together with the celery still raw, lacking in clams and over powered by the bacon. I don't know what happened in the kitchen that night, but if that keeps up the restaurant is doomed."

  • "Has a very nice Valentines dinner here. It is still new enough/in a hotel we were able to get a table when we wanted. Waitress was very friendly and the fix four course menu was a good selection of local food. Only items we did not finish was the dessert. Everything else was great. Could see going to the bar in the summer when the pool is open"

  • "Beautiful room - had table right in front of the fireplace. No hard liquor license, but offered bar creative soju (sake?) cocktails. A good, though not extensive, wine list. Seemed a little under-staffed (only one waitress on duty), but they did a really nice job -- attentive, personable, informative. Ordered scallops and they were perfectly done and perfectly presented. I would definitely go back. Give this place a little time to mature and I think it will turn out to be a real local treasure."

  • "This place is trying really hard, but parts of it still feels like a high end Denny's. That may be too harsh but I think it is the bright lighting and stark white booths that turned me off. They have a great selection of local wines and beer, but no hard liquor license so no cocktail before dinner unless you want one made of soju. The cheese and charcuterie plate was rather sparse & uneventful. The calamari didn't come with any aoli or lemon wedges - something notably missing. The roasted chicken looked great. My husband polished off his Shrimp and Grits. My steak was good and came w/a side of benaise. The potatoes and broccoli were uneventful & boring. The bread pudding and coconut-kiwi martini desserts were good."

  • "We were here on Christmas Day in the evening. They had an excellent prix fixe menu. The prawns and grits appetizer was outstanding. So were the roast lamb and the prime rib."
    Dined on 12/25/2012
  • "This was our second time at the restaurant. The menu is somewhat limited but creative, Excellent ingredients well prepared. The one word of warning, portions are small. My husband and I prefer that, but some might feel that amounts are in adequate."

  • "The food has been consistently good. Very fresh and well prepaired, the ambiance lends itself in the presentation. Service is still in a state of growing pains in that the restaurant has only been open a few month. Patience will be well rewarded with the quality of the food and variety offered very well prepaired."
