Diner Reviews
  • "This place is now our favorite place to eat in Newport Beach! Great food, good ambiance and love the people who work there. Misty, Marissa and Greg are great. Friendly and good service. Make sure you make reservations! Hope you enjoy this place as much as we do!"

  • "It was my first time dining at Sol Grill. It turned out to be a very pleasant experience. The food portion is very generous. The lamb chops are mouth watering and very tender. The service is excellent. All the employees are very attentive. If you're looking for a vibrant dining scene this is the place. Will sure come back again."

  • "I didn't think the food here was anything special. Would definitely stick with the Cannery in Newport, as the prices aren't that much higher, if at all."

  • "Comfortable, good food, great service, and a bonus guitar player."

  • "Overall we liked the place a lot. The food was outstanding, good beer selection, romantic atmosphere, and their Sangria was great. The largest issue was from the point where our food had been cleared and leftovers put in a to-go box, it took 45 minutes for us to get our check. Despite asking for it, the server was too busy taking other people's orders, serving drinks, and making small chat. We had two groups of people who were seated after we received our appetizers finish their appetizers and dinner, pay, and leave before we even got the check. For that reason alone we might try again but I doubt we'll be returning."

  • "Booked this thinking it was a different place. It is small and cozy with a delicious menu and friendly service. Salmon and Mussels both yummy dishes."

  • "Thank you again, Sol Grill. We celebrated our wedding reception here last year and came back exactly one year later for our 1 year anniversary. The food is as delicious as I remembered and service is prompt, professional and never forced. See you again next year!"

  • "Food was good, it was hard to find. Mapquest directions lacked one street."

  • "A great find! The ambience was fantastic. A small, quaint restaurant with an acoustic guitarist playing in the background. Recommend reservations because the restaurant is small. Food was amazing and almost everything was perfect with one exception. The night we were there (with a 7:00 p.m. reservation), the restaurant was understaffed and our service was quite slow. They certainly needed to add to their wait staff. Other than that, I would definitely make another reservation at Sol Grill."

  • "Fantastic food. Parts of the swordfish were a little but too salty, but overall the food was incredible. Service was prompt and friendly. I would definitely recommend this place."

  • "really enjoyed the diverse, and interesting menu. The Filet meatballs with portabella gravy were outstanding...perhaps a little heavy handed on the salt, but this is a matter of varying preference. We had three seafood selections which were all excellent. The portions are more than generous, and the fish cooked perfectly (this is an unfortunately difficult thing to find, as most restaurants tend to overcook, thus ruin, otherwise great quality seafood). The lamb and chicken were equally delicious. The guitar player on Tuesday was excellent. The servers were warm and gracious. This is a great place for a date night, and one that we will return to often. We would come back again and again for the quality of the fish alone!"

  • "Love this place! Sautéed mushrooms are the best appetizer (way better than you could imagine,) and the Sangria is the best! Chicken Alfredo is great and lobster ravioli was also a good one. The owner is always there taking care of the tables and helping out anyway she can. She truly goes out of her way to make it an awesome dinning experience."

  • "This is one of the best dining pleasures in all of Newport Beach."

  • "The complimentary bread is soft and was served to us warm which really goes a long way in my book. That is usually overlooked. Started off with the filet mignon meatballs. Probably their most popular appetizer and for a good reason. I got the lobster ravioli and was very pleased. It's creamy with a lobster flavor that is not overwhelming. My husband ordered the lamb and it was cooked perfectly with lots of flavor. Super juicy as well. A little pricey for an any night restaurant and be sure to make a reservation."

  • "We've been to Sol Grill in the past, but it had been a while since our last visit. It is a small neighborhood gem, and we were reminded of that during a Friday dinner. Local guitarists played lovely dinner music, the room has a great eclectic artistic vibe, the sangria is tasty, and the food top-notch. We've always done well with the seafood selections here, but tried the ground filet mignon meat loaf this time--wow--terrific!"

  • "Cute, eclectic atmosphere, very clean. The meatballs, in a slighltly spicy mushroom sauce, are terrific; you actually want to drink the leftover sauce. The fish dishes were very good, however the accompanyments are a bit boring. An overall good experience."

  • "Small dining room, very cozy. The atmosphere makes me think of a gypsy den. Excellent food, wine and sangria."

  • "This place is amazing! The meatballs are to die for and the sangria goes down REAL smooth :)"

  • "We love this restaurant! The food is consistent as well as the service. I would say that it is a local's favorite however, the location is in a busy tourist spot by the Newport Pier. We frequent only in fall, winter and early spring other wise it is a bit of a hassle. With that said - if you are from out of town - try it! Understand the decor is super eclectic and a wee bit retro. But, that adds to the charm."

  • "This place was so wonderful! Food was excellent and the sangria was out of this world. The staff was friendly and very attentive. Wonderful spot for a romantic or small group get together. Will deffenately come back and recommend to others. Thank you Sol for the great start to our New Years!"

  • "We had reservations for a group of 10 and some parts of the dining experience were good and some could use a little work. This is a small place, however there was one server for the entire restaurant which made service a little slow, but she was very nice. My water glass was never refilled the entire meal. We had to ask for bread. As far as food, the oysters were good, as were half the other meals. The two Halibut meals had to be sent back they were so salty and overcooked. It may be that they can't handle a large group and turn out quality food, but for orders that come in more slowly they would do fine."

  • "Great location, small in size but big in every other way. It is my wife's favorite reasturant at the beach. Local owner takes great pride in this gem. As it's popularity has grown its best to make a reservation."

  • "They were short staffed, the "filet" was stringy, and it was just a disappointment."

  • "Got to love a decently priced menu that is soooo tasty. Who wants to eat at the big, overpriced tourist traps when you can have a nice, fresh, interesting dining experience. The meatballs are so amazing. Also had the halibut and was blown away by the taste and portion given the price. The atmosphere is perfect for those looking for a quiet evening."

  • "Love Sol Grill and normally have outstanding meals. This time, However, it seems the chef might have lost the top to the pepper shaker! The sauces on our dishes were way too peppery. Will return though and try something different!"

  • "Service and food were amazing. Misty was very attentive and friendly and gave great recommendations on wine and appetizers. The leftovers were still great the next day. We loved the artwork and the decor as well. Very romantic and small and quiet which is what we were looking for on that particular night."
