A word from Soif Wine Bar Restaurant

Chef Santos Majano’s menu changes almost daily, though every dish – small plates, appetizers, entrées and desserts – emphasizes seasonal, sustainably grown, and intensely flavored ingredients primarily sourced from local farmers and provisioners.

Soif offers over 50 wines by the glass from small, artisanal producers, as well as some 400 selections by the bottle from our wine shop, available to diners for $10 over retail price.

We find our delight in discovering the distinctive, expressive wines, sourcing and preparing delicious, wholesome food, and then putting it all together so when guests walk in the door, night after night, there is something here for them that is authentic – that satisfies their thirst for the soulful, the delicious, and the well made.

Not as good as we remembered. Probably won't go back. Service as slow and had to wait for everything. The special gnocchi entree was very good while the cod was cooked perfectly but lacked any taste, fortunately the vegetables were very good and provided the interest and flavor instead of the fish. Nothing of any interest on the desert menu, so went out for ice cream at Marianne's.

Excellent food and wine. We went for a special anniversary date and it was a lovely experience all around. Our only complaint was that the musicians, though quite good, were loud enough that it interfered with our conversation. We are 30s and not hard of hearing, too. We've had serious trouble in the past at Soif when our dining partners were older and had mild hearing problems. We try to dine early to avoid the music.

I've been eating at Soif for years and it is always outstanding. This night It must have been having troubles. My salad, a Barata with greens was good tasting but was dry and not the usual creamy moist cheese it should be.The soup was bland but the broccoli and cauliflower were great. The service was unusually slow and and in fact I think they must have lost our order as we sat for ever while others around us who came in later were served. They did offer us more wine on the house but I believe more should have been done. Wed already had two glasses of wine and more was too much. I will return as I have so many times before, but I was truly surprised it was like this and that more wasn't done to make it better.

We bought a bottle of wine in their store and they still charged us a corkage fee - RIDICULOUS! The albacore appetizer tasted and looked like it came out of a can of tuna - disgusting - I had been there when it first opened and loved it - I did not like their menu at all this time.

If you are a local, you will certainly know about Soif. Of the dozens of times I have been there, I haven't been disappointed even once. They obviously take care in hiring and educating their staff on the current wine selections. I don't think you could go wrong with Soif as a dinner choice or as simply a place to have a nice glass of wine and a cheese plate. Whether you are a college student on a first date, or a couple out to celebrate your 50th wedding anniversary, Soif is an ideal venue.

This was my first experience of Soife, I had wanted to try it out for a long time. Service was great. The food also great in taste, presentation. I would have liked some meat options on the small plate menu choices but the offerings were delicious.

Started out in the retail room being served by a knowledgeable fellow who made excellent recommendations based on our descriptions of what we each like in a wine. Moved from there to the dining room. Several of us have food allergies and the waitress was quite helpful in determining what foods would be problematic as well as offering ways to modify some of the selections. The music (Hot Jazz night) was enjoyable. Not too loud for conversation despite how close our table was. Soif's wine list features wines that we haven't seen anywhere else and everything is available by the glass. We love being able to try several new wines each time we're there as well as being able to purchase the wines next door in the retail area.

Awesome!! Great wine tasting before dinner at our table. Food was nicely paired with wines. Lamb is the best, must have the wine paired with it, worth the cost. Dessert is a must, do not forget to have the suggested paired wine with, even if it is a port. Wonderful dinning experience for myself and spouse!

I've been going to Soif for a very long time, and I am sad to report that my last few experiences have disappointed me. It has always been over priced, but that was tolerable when the food, wine and service was fantastic. Now, for me, it is just over priced. the food has become a let down and the wine list is hohum and the staff has become indifferent. I won't be back.

It is such a relief that Soif is a firm believer in offering fine wines from around the world and at reasonable prices. It is one of the few restaurants in the area that I feel confident taking my wine-loving friends to. I had the best vegetarian entree I've ever had, and I'm not a vegetarian! Friendly and knowledgeable staff is an added bonus.

    Dined on 8/3/2014
Soif is a good choice for wine and small plates, although the selection of plates wasn't as interesting this this time. There were three types of peppers out of six choices. The marcona almonds are always good. The padrone peppers were as well. The Blue heron lettuce salad wasn't easy to eat or split, but it was okay. We just cut it up. The ingredients didn't blend that well physically. The pinot noir flight was excellent, but the server didn't tell us much about the wines. Some visits to Soif have been educational.

My wife and I enjoyed Soif so much on our short visit to Santa Cruz we returned the next nights to bring out travelling companions. Food really good (though a limited menu which was fine by me since the lamb was worth having twice !) and a very interesting, eclectic wine list. The service could not have been better and both nights our waitresses were very knowledgeable on the wines and advised on pairings - and all of us were experienced wine drinkers (sounds like winos but don't mean that !). I rarely write restaurant reviews but this place was standout.

Soif is a delightful neighborhood gem in downtown Santa Cruz, CA. The menu is inventive and incredibly well executed. We had the Burrata and pork belly appetizers and both were outstanding. Entrees we the perfect size and the flavor profiles and interesting ingredients were perfectly paired with unique wine choices. The service was friendly and unpretentious but these folks definitely know their wines. This was our second visit and we will definitely be back!

Couldn't find our reservation and took a long time to figure out even though restaurant was half full. Then after seating no one approached out table for 10 min. Food was decent. Had multiple apps and small plates but nothing amazing. Once the waiter did engage he was quite good but probably not enough to bring me back.

Wine list is outstanding, and the pairings have yet to miss. This is a regular fun spot to eat for my wife and I now.

Even though all the entrees came with something gluten-y (pasta, farro, etc), the chefs were happy to cook up some quinoa especially for us, even though the place was busy. And our server did a FANTASTIC job recommending a bottle of wine to match three different entrees ranging from tuna to pork.

The ambience is very nice and the musical group performing Monday night was really excellent. (Caution, however: The sound volume approached the point where it made conversation impossible.) Food was very good: The Miyagi oysters were fresh and delicious. The pork roast could have been served a bit hotter with more fat trimmed off, but it was basically fine. I wish the wine list were expanded, more varied, and offered more central California wines. I also think Soif should offer the choice of a house red and white for the more economically-minded diners. Overall, a very pleasant evening with very good food and music in a chic atmosphere.

¨This is not only a fine dining experience in that the food is, to use a cliché, to die for. The food is well presented on the plate and there is a suggested pairing. The waiters; however, are willing to work with the diners' questions and wine preferences. And when the wine is served and the food laid on the table there you are set for a palatable evening romancing not only your senses, but romancing your honey.

One of my favorites in Santa Cruz and has been for a long time. lately, the food has gotten even better and I'm wondering if they brought in a new chef. My one and only complaint is that I wish they had one or two things that they consistently kept on the menu. The one I really miss is the passion fruit tart! That was one of the very best things I've ever eaten!! But even without such a wonderful dessert, this is one of the very best restaurants in Santa Cruz. Don't miss it.

Soif's an infrequent stop because you can have a glass of wine and a couple small plates and before you know it you've spent $150! But we were treating a friend, so. The soup, something pureed with squash in it, was fabulous! I took a bite and couldn't speak for a moment! Their house-cured salmon plate has a dreamy sauce, pea shoots, and slivers of their own pickles. The Romano beans & mushrooms sounded good but I think it's too early for Romanos. They were tough, not very meaty, too oily for my taste. Gotta have the piquillo peppers stuffed with melty Manchego goodness & drizzled with a basil oil! Service relaxed & friendly. I loved my sparkling Ettore Germano Brut Rose Nebbiolo. The chocolate Pot de Creme was unremarkable and very small.
