A word from SoHo South Cafe
Soho South Cafe has been made famous by its patrons as one of Savannah's staple weekly lunch and Sunday brunch spots. Opening in 1997, Soho South Cafe is located in the heart of Historic Downtown Savannah, appropriately named after the iconic New York burrough for its proximity to nearby shops and entertainment venues.
Built originally as an automotive service station in 1945, the building sat vacant for years before the restaurant's original owners acquired the space. The restaurant was then acquired by Daniel Reed Hospitality and remodeled to make improvements to the existing model which represents the latest adaptation as it stands today.
The design of the restaurant incorporates elements of iconic, archetypal New York City. The quirky, eclectic esthetic lends a sense of humor to the monumental, vast interior space. The overall atmosphere results in a casual dining experience that works perfectly for lunch and dinner on the weeks-end.

We used to have lunch at SoHo frequently before it was re-done. Lunch was excellent and always a special treat. Dessert was fabulous. Dinner was very disappointing. My entre (roast pork) was very dry and tough. The grouper special was microscopic. Dessert (chocolate cake) was dry and crumbly. My entre was not billed, thankfully. I would not recommend this restaurant until I hear better news about it. We will not be back. The restaurant was quiet only because there were so few diners. That should have been a clue that something was amiss. Saturday evening should be very busy. Wait staff was excellent....not their fault. They were not the cooks.

Menu can get dull but food is pretty consistent. House speciality salad with add-on (chicken, Shrimp etc.) is a good value. Steak grade seems like it can be hit or miss or we avoid the meat choices. Last time we had the special, Prime Rib, it was cold and tasteless.

We had a wonderful meal and a VERY good server. The piano music was a little puzzling. The choices of music played did NOT match the vibe of the restaurant at all. It was 1980's cheesy and unfortunately was not "background" music you could ignore. We cracked jokes about it all night! it did not ruin our experience by any means, but just did not add to the ambiance. We often eat at another place with live piano and have often remarked how much it adds and how we hardly even notice it. just pick some new pieces?!? This remains one of favorite places in Savannah!!

Although the food was good, this restaurant is hurt by the size of the dining room (too big) and the hangover 80's feel to the decor. Mismatched tables and chairs in a large space with filler decorative items does not match the quality of the food. The room does not fill up and you feel like you are eating by yourself. Cut the space by half and bring the decor up to par with other Savannah restaurants. The bar area is an improvement, but the dining room needs to follow suit.

Had dinner on a Thursday night so it was not too busy. Therefore, easy to talk among our group of 4. I imagine it could be loud when busier due to high ceilings. Had the roasted garlic heads and the shrimp dish for starters. Very good. One of us had the chicken special and he said the breast portion was a bit dry but loved the risotto. My short ribs were tasty but not the best I've had. I had hoped for a little more "fall off the boneness." Others in our group had steak and were quite pleased. We will definitely return.

The restaurant is an open warehouse, furnished with ecletic colllection of chairs and tables. The baby grand and pianist playing a lovely collection of showtunes and popular music was no doubt intended to warm the environment up; however, it is much more suitable for a large group than for a romantic duo. Worse, we had a dour, ungracious server. She ruined what little romance we might have extracted from the evening. The food was "good." The shrimp on the scampi were overcooked and chewy but the pasta tasty. My boyfriend's duck breast was much better than my dish. Modestly disappointed in our meals, we decided to try out the key lime pie for dessert. It was good but not great much as the rest of the food...

We were there for a Saturday night dinner and had a wonderful time. There was a piano player was not to loud but was just nice back round music. The server we had was great she was attentive but not in our face all the time and the food was outstanding. I would recommend this for any occasion and for lunch as I have been there for both.

The restaurant is in a former warehouse so it has poor acoustics and is noisy. Friday night they also had a piano player so that added to the din. Service was pretty good. We ordered drinks and they did not have Absolute vodka? The scampi was good but not great. The tile fish special was good but not great. It was a small piece of fish and the underlying wild rice was runny and flavorless.

Regarding service, we were partially ignored due to the large group seated next to us. Since they were serving Sunday brunch, we ordered an omelet and a salad with some cocktails. Maybe we should have ordered more exotic dishes… maybe a quiche? Nothing we received seemed particularly fabulous. I felt my culinary skills were on par with SoHo South. I would come back to try other dishes, since so many people give high ratings for the place.

Make sure you are dressed for success or you will be shuffled to the bar area instead of the dining room even with a reservation. Our reservations were for brunch but I noticed the cocktail, wine, beer list is unique and innovative. The crab cake dish was outstanding and I would definitely order it again. We also ordered the breakfast burrito and were a little disappointed as we could have easily made this dish ourselves at home (store bought salsa included). Another note, a waiter/waitress is never supposed to pick up your signed bill and look at their tip in front of you. We are great tippers but I find this habit rude.

This was the second time we've been to this place, and our first review. Firstly, what a gorgeous place. A completely renovated, high ceiling location, that is bright, with big windows, plants everywhere, and beautifully designed open space. It's bright and cheery. The sound is energetic even with the high ceilings. The food is amazing too, from their signature Tomato Basil Bisque, to the Grilled Salmon BLT, to The Three Cheese Melt with house made Pimiento Aioli. Wow. The deserts were just as amazing, as was the Shrimp & Grits on the Sunday Brunch menu. Be sure to visit, it's a wonderful place. Also, try out their other restaurant, Public House, it's also wonderful. See separate review.

Have been to Soho South several times, but the most recent visit proved a bit disappointing. We started in the bar by ordering martinis which proved beyond the ability of the bartender to handle. The Shrimp Diavolo was overcooked. The sauce was tasty, with lots of garlic. The vegetable lasagna arrived at the table cold. Desserts were disappointing, too. I ordered the chocolate brownie which was overcooked and crunchy around the edges. It was disappointing. I will give them another chance to show what they can do. Other restaurants operated by this group exceed expectations. Soho is just a little rough around the edges still.

My wife and I had our 34th anniversary dinner here and the food was excellent. My wife had the duck and really enjoyed it. I had the Soho Shrimp and it was also very good. My girlfriend and I were looking for a above average dinner in a cool and fun Southern Restaurant. The SoHo Café met and exceeded expectations. From reception through paying bill, it was an awesome place. Cocktails were generous. Linda had a vodka/soda and I had a martini. Both were awesome. For dinner, she had an awesome chicken dish and I had the Shrimp scampi. Both were excellent quality, fresh ingredients and decent proportions. The atmosphere was good. It was an open dining arrangement with a lot of windows and space between tables. It was a little loud, but it was still good. Definitely recommend this place. it's also a little away from the main street action which we liked. Forgot to give props to the service. It was also excellent.

If you are anywhere near Savannah's Civic Center or Historic District, you will love this quirky, cool venue. The bar is in a separate room with hip bar stools and a great atmosphere. The dining area has mismatched chairs and a beautiful wall of doors, shutters, screens and windows with chipped paint and interesting colors. They are securely fastened to the wall, with is good because if not, I would have brought a bigger purse! The food is outstanding and wine list superb. Service is very friendly and I will return to Soho on my next visit to Savannah....

Although the host wasn't particularly welcoming or friendly when we arrived and gave the name on our reservation, our overall experience was pleasant. Our table was comfortable, the reinvigorated decor provided a nice setting, the menu was varied and interesting, and our server was attentive, friendly and upbeat. The food was fresh and delicious, with a lovely presentation. The prices seemed a bit on the high side for a pasta dish, but not completely unreasonable. The wine selection was solid. I will definitely dine here again.

...we enjoyed our Mother's Day Brunch. (It WOULD have been nice to get a call, warning us of the broken A/C, especially since I'd made reservations over 3 weeks in advance, but in spite of the sweltering temps, we all still had a great time.) Service was excellent... The food was delicious... and it was nice to see one of my Savannah favorites get a face-lift without changing the overall ambience of the space. Fair warning - we've always referred to this place as "SoSlow South" and it doesn't look like that name is changing (although, it WAS a holiday...) But, if you are in good company and aren't in a hurry, then just sit back and enjoy the atmosphere and service, because the food is worth the wait!
