Diner Reviews
  • "My friend and I had wanted some good Italian food while she was in town and thought grabbing a bite before our Broadway show would be perfect. This was just a half mile walk to the theater and we arrived very early in the evening (around 5:30) so it was still very quiet. The service was spectacular forever. The wait staff were very attentive and gave solid recommendations when asked. The food was wonderful, came out right away, with tremendous flavor. Would definitely take friends/family back here, although perhaps at a busier hour to see what its like. Great experience!"

  • "Absolutely delicious food and great service. Don't know if I'd be willing to pay full prices for everything, but my Groupon was a great value."

  • "I eat there every time I am in the city. Great food and everyone is always friendly. Best ribeye in manhattan"

  • "I have been to this restaurant before and been very pleased. However, on this visit the poor service made for a less than pleasant visit. First, when I was asked If I wanted pepper on my appetizer, the server sarcastically said it was free. Then, they served desert to my date but not to me until I asked them to bring the desert I had ordered at the same time my date did. The food was excellent but the service ruined the evening."

  • "Used a Groupon for a 4 course meal and the food was amazing! Our main course the potterhouse steak medium rare was amazingly tasty and juicy! Very yummy. Me and my date were very satisfied."

  • "We arrived at Sofia 5 minutes before our reservation and were show right to our table. We were one of only 4 couples in the restaurant as snow was falling all day in the city. Wait staff was pleasant but seemed distrcted by the Olympics on the TV in the bar. Food was very good and served in a timely manner. The staff began pulling tables and chairs to the back to make room for a Fashion Week party and this took away from our ability to relax. The manager did come and speak with us and reassured us we were fine and didn't rush us. Overall I would come here again. Just happened to be the perfect storm of things going on that night. Food and wine vere great it just would have been nice to enjoy it all it a slower Saturday Night in the City pace."

  • "There was a private party for fashion week the night we went and they clearly proved who was the more important customer. They herded us to a back section with no ambiance and from the looks of it is most likely a storage area. Once seated the service was rushed and as the servers were taking orders they seemed distracted from the table and glancing around at the private party. Once the food arrived it was of decent quality but seemed a bit overpriced even with a groupon discount. The restaurant will probably have a different experience on a regular night but just make sure to call ahead to see if there are any private events that evening as they clearly showed more attention to those customers rather than regular diners."

  • "Alex and the rest of the Sofia Italian Grill made the evening delightful. We had a great table in the back of the restaurant and we were able to really soak in the beautiful setting. The food & wine were amazing together or apart especially the tiramisu which was the best I have had in 15 years! Hats off to the culinary staff!"

  • "Got to the venue, and was seated immediately...Seated at a nice table, but that's probably because we were only there with 2-3 other diners...ordered a $145 bottle of wine, and the waiter said they don't have it, so I ordered another bottle, this one was $150, and it was a 2004,the waiter comes our with a 2011. He said he can do it at 125$. Ordered the calamari, it "looked" fresh, but it was rubbery, and def. frozen. I also ordered the "lamb rack" and it came out as 2 lamb chops....I ordered them medium, and it came out well done....This place i predict will close down within 6 months. Overpriced and very forgettable. I had to think hard what I ordered."

  • "We came here with a groupon which was a really great deal. Bottle of wine, 2 apps, 2 entrees and 2 desserts for $110.00. The food was good, but my biggest complaint is the wine that they serve with the groupon. I understand it's going to be a cheap bottle but this wine was beyond horrible. We are in no way wine snobs, I even think two buck chuck from Trader Joe's is much better than this wine. It had a horrible smell and a painful taste. Next time I wouldn’t mind paying a little extra for a better bottle. Nice ambiance but it was pretty dead for a Saturday night. They have a large space to fill, makes me wonder if they will even be around a year from now. Staff was nice but very inexperienced. Did not know basic stuff from the menu."

  • "Our meal was tasteless and bland. The house wines by the glass were also of poor quality. The chocolate lava cake dessert was delicious. It was the only thing that had any flavor. Would not recommend or eat there again. We were very disappointed.."

  • "I read the reviews about this place AFTER I purchased the Groupon. After reading the poor reviews, my expectations were low and I was regretting the purchase. I was so WRONG! This was the best meal we had in NYC! A lot of the reviews talked about poor service and they said they left the restaurant hungry. We were treated like royalty while at the restaurant. The portions were HUGE (and we are from the south and used to huge portions). The food quality was exceptional and DELICIOUS! The steak was cooked so perfectly and the creamed spinach was to die for! We were also running late for our Broadway show and they sped up the meal and gave directions to the theatere. I will return when I come back to NYC! Perfect before Broadway dinner spot!"

  • "The menu needs a complete overhaul. There is nothing worth going there for. All the food was bland and boring both on the plate and the palet. The wine list is overpriced for what's being offered. Even tourists deserve better then these offerings."

  • "the service was lacking, we even had to ask for menues, and when we finally ordered the waiter kept asking if we wanted to order more sides and more appys. my guess was to up the bill to up the tip. the food was ok, but i won't be going back."

  • "If NYC for Radio City show, restaurant so close. There were four of us, all loved the food, atmosphere, service , etc. will recommend to friends and family. Server made suggestions for entrees, spot on. Glad to make reservations through open table, whole process was very easy and user friendly. Will pass this on as well."

  • "I had been to Sofia's a while back and really enjoyed the food. Unfortunately there has been a change in the quality/taste. The prawns were old and over-cooked and the pasta had no real flavor. The deserts also lacked flavor and texture. Drinks tasted good but there was not much liquor in them. That said about the food and drinks, the service was excellent and the staff made us feel very welcome. Over all, I would have to say that I could not recommend this restaurant to my friends at this time. perhaps there will be an improvement in the coming year."

  • "Very business night while on a visit to the Christmas Tree in Rockefeller Center. Many folks waiting. Food overall was good. Service was very average although the servers were all running from table to table. It wasn't for lack of trying. Two other tables got up and left after a long wait. We did think $15 for a glass of wine was excessive. It is worth a visit maybe not on a busy Saturday night."

  • "We were seeing a show and unfortunately waited too long to make a reservation. ...Sofia had a table, and it was conveniently located to the theater. Service was good, although a little pushy on the drinks. Food was fair at best....how do you charge 38.00 for spaghetti and meatballs? We dine out often in the city and this seemed way out of line even for NY."

  • "Booked this restaurant for my 21st Bday dinner. Food was good. The molten lava cake was delicious! Had a semi-large group and everyone enjoyed themselves. Sat in the back private area. Staff was attentive and manager helped with anything we needed. Lighting is kinda dark but can be nice for a romantic evening out too Had a great time though:)"

  • "We all enjoyed our night out at Sofia - there were for of us and each had a different dinner. Clean plates all around! Seating is comfortable in either booths or tables, arranged in smaller groups so that the atmosphere is warm. The manager came by to ensure that we were all happy with our selections, and service was excellent. Great bar, according to some in our party who arrived early. Nicely varied menu includes seafood, steak and pasta with a selection of specials. Heartily recommend Sofia's!"

  • "My husband and I went to Sofia's to celebrate his birthday after seeing a play. Not only was the service impeccable, the food was out of this world. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who wanted to have a great homemade Italian meal."

  • "If you are looking excellent food and service within walking distance of the theatre district, this is the place for you. Oysters at the bar to start, and when we asked for a quiet table, we were placed in a lovely booth where conversation was easy and no one had to shout. The food was excellent--classic Italian, but light enough for a pre-play meal. Service was friendly and attentive. Easy walk to the theatre afterwards."

  • "We received excellent service, and the food was solidly authentic Italian. The waiter went out of his way to make sure our children were provided for, which is why I would recommend this to families who want to include their children in an excellent dining experience. Ours are 5 and 8, and well accustomed to behaving appropriately in a restaurant. We had the Branzino and Mushroom Pappardelle, both of which were excellent. I would highly recommend this restaurant to people visiting the Rockefeller area in NYC, both for the attentive service and the execution of the Italian cuisine."

  • "Went here with my husband and his parents and had a lovely evening - good food, attentive (but not overly solicitous) service, and the noise level was low enough that we could have a normal conversation. Will definitely return."

  • "The food was very good. They had a great assortment for all palettes. The only negative was that the waiter was a bit pushy when we decided not to order appetizers and gave me a bit of a hard time when I made a small special request for my dish. Regardless, I will most likely return to Sofia Italian Grill again in the future."

  • "We chose the restaurant because of its location -- midway between the Rockefeller Center area and the theater district -- to facilitate our making our way to the theater after a day of sightseeing. However, the restaurant was recently "converted" from a well-known steak house to a Continental restaurant. As a result, it doesn't know what it wants to be and the décor and food were a disappointing mix of both formats."

  • "Unfortunately I was stuck in traffic and my husband had to wait at bar for almost an hour for me. He loved the sliders and clam appetizers. When I finally arrived it was 7pm and had to rush and eat to make an 8 o'clock show. Thank god we explained the and they got everything to us right away with a smile. The Lobster roll is amazing and absolutely loved their Octopus. I'd definitely come back on a day when I don't have a show to attend and get to really enjoy, as their food is great. They are expensive but I think worth it."
