A word from Sofi Restaurant
Born in Milan to culinary great Cesarina, a Cordon Bleu of Chaine des Rotisseurs in Paris, Maurizio inherited his passion for cooking and learned his skills under the watchful eye of his mother.

After years of being the front man in Milan and New York’s most prestigious restaurants, Maurizio realized that he wanted to pursue his passions as a chef and subsequently opened his own Maurizio Trattoria in NYC’s Greenwich Village to great critical acclaim and success.

Along with many prestigious articles and reviews, Maurizio Trattoria was also voted one of the best restaurants in New York by Forbes magazine from 2004 to 2007. Maurizio Trattoria’s regular clientele included famous A-list movie stars, fashion designers, Ceo’s, as well as neighborhood notables.

Sofi Restaurant is an upscale Milanese Trattoria simply decorated with lithographs from Carroll Tyson and table tops that are handmade from two hundred year old wood.

  • "Finally, an Italian restaurant without Alfredo. Buono ma un po caro. Definitely recommend for varieties of pasta."

  • "Each meal I have had at this restaurant has been excellent. Exquisite Italian food served with great style. Choose carefully and you can get a great wine at a very modest price."

  • "Wonderful dinner, great service, excellent wine suggestion. You were out of sambuca? (I made up for it with a port.) We'll be back... many times!"

  • "This place was a little expensive once you added in a nice bottle of wine but it was worth it just to eat the potato gnocchi."

  • "Two friends and I enjoyed a lovely dinner at Sofi Monday evening. My one friend had a risotti dish which she loved and my other friend had the sauteed cod in a zesty tomato sauce and soft polenta which she also loved. We split a couple grilled octopus appetizers which were fabulous. I had the orecchiette with broccoli rapa, sweet and spicy sausage olive oil and garlic which was good although not nearly enough spicy sausage for my taste. Sofi is a terrific neighborhood gem of a place - I could easily eat there once a week and look forward to returning."

  • "Food was really good. Roberto was our host and he did a very fine job and knew the menu very well. He also showed me some of their best entrees on the menu. Made it very easy for me to decide."

  • "Found them on Yelp to eat nearby before Buddy Guy show. Great made from scratch Italian, really sweet waitress from Italy who knew the menu well, we'll be back."

  • "Food was very bland, uninspired. Vodka/lemon sorbet dessert was sensational."

  • "They've been open for only 9 months or so and I have been there at least 12 times. Great food, service and the bird prints on the walls are wonderful. Our whole neighborhood is in love with this restaurant."

  • "stopped in here prior to the Blackhawks' Stadium Series on a snowy Saturday after booking the reservation based on recent reviews. This place did not disappoint! The staff was welcoming, polished, and enthusiastic. The food was very good - started with the Tropical salad which was a nice combo of peppery radicchio and creamy avocado topped with hearts of palm. My companion and I split a wonderful sea bass special and a prawn/scallop dish that was cooked to perfection. I wish we could have stayed for dessert! Prices were very reasonable and the menu extensive! I'd love to go back to try more!"

  • "Nice neighborhood place. Broad menu with very good service. Food generally good although appetizers a little better than entrees. Certainly would go back!"

  • "This restaurant serves the most amazing food. Everything on the menu is delicious. Hidden gem that is my personal favorite in Chicago! Service is top of the line. Priced fairly and won't be disappointed. In fact, you will want to go back for the food and wine sooner than later."

  • "The food was good, but not great. The menu is expansive, probably too much to choose from. The menu should be smaller with more of a focus on quality rather than quantity."

  • "Went on a Thursday evening and had a nice time. We took advantage of the pre-fix menu and were happy with the selections. Our server was attentive and made sure we were satisfied with our meals. I would certainly go back and would recommend them to others."

  • "Have walked passed this spot and never noticed it; found it on Open Table!. The food was excellent. The service was too fast. No time between courses. Will return, and ask to be "paced." Shared mussels for an appetizer and probably could have split an entree, but did split dessert. Waiter did recommend the perfect wine to pair with our appetizer and mains."

  • "Sofi is a great environment in which to dine. On a chilly and snowy night the lilting Italian greeting was a warm beginning. I started with a refreshing vodka and lemoncello martini. After a crisp radicchio salad with basil garnish, the main course was a sea bass filet with marinated artichoke wedges. The fish was tender and not overcooked. The waiter recommended a medium dry white wine with dinner that worked well. An espresso with the creme brûlée capped the meal. If you enjoy good food without pretense in a relaxing environment, try Sofi!"

  • "Always great food with service to match! Sofi's has a varied selection of meals not found anywhere else in the city with wonderful specials. Reminds me of the meals I have had in Italy."

  • "First time at this restaurant. Outstanding. Not the traditional Italian menu. All my courses were outstanding. You can get the traditional items, but try the main menu selections first. If you are in downtown Chicago, this is a go to place for dinner. Prices are not over the top, especially for a city center restaurant."

  • "We came here for NYE and we had a good time. The food was wonderful. The only downside was that our server was very hard to understand, so getting recommendations was hard. We didn't get the complementary glass of Prosecco that was advertised for the evening, but we also didn't ask. Either way, I know I'll be back. It's one of the better/nicer restaurants in the neighborhood."

  • "This restaurant is underrated and so much better than many of the italian restaurants in the city claiming to make fresh pasta. The owner is very welcoming and all of his staff are great."

  • "Printers Row, though close to Auditorium theater & not too far from Symphony Hall, has lacked a white table clothed restaurant for a long time. We now have one. Sofi, an italian restaurant, opened the middle of 2013 & has delightfully entertained the neighborhood with its fine winelist & wonderful, seasonal menu. It is still a well-kept secret, though; theater & symphony goers should start paying attention. Our shared risotto was cooked just right, the veal was heavenly, & the fish was cooked extremely well. We ended our meal with tiramisu & apple tart. Service was friendly & attentive, and we were given excellent suggestions for wines. We saw couples, families, & young children even! Definitely a friendly, neighborhood restaurant."

  • "The food at Sofi is delicious! We happily ate the grilled baby artichokes blanketed in a tasty fonduta cheese sauce and thoroughly enjoyed the minestrone soup with its tasty broth. Sofi's Bolognese sauce on gluten free penne was a rare treat, rich and plentiful. But what was utterly melt-in-your-mouth heavenly was a special of Veal Piccata with Mushrooms! The veal was tender, the mushrooms were tender, and the sauce was delicate and scrumptious. We can only hope that Sofi decides to include this as a regular menu item on a menu that is extensive and inventive in all categories. Sofi is no ordinary checkered tablecloth Italian joint: its chef, from Italy, includes a multitude of dishes that are seldom seen here."

  • "We stayed at the Windham Blake and this restaurant was recommended to us. It was less than a block away. It was just great! We loved it! Had a great dinner and even went back after seeing a play on the following evening just for a scrumptious dessert! On our next visit to Chicago, we'll be back!!!! What a gem!"

  • "When we vist Chicago we try to find a local gem and avoid the tourist spots and chain restaurants. This one did not disappoint. It was not very crowded for a Saturday night. Our server was an authentic Italian gentleman who leant some old country charm to the meal. The meals were very good and portions just right. The lobster ravioli was rich and delicious, definitely the type of dish you can't find this well executed very often. My wife's lamb chops were also spot on. Desserts were delicious with Tiaramisu and I'm not sure the title but a chocolate lava volcano (that took 7 minutes to cook) which was absolutely decadent. Entreees are $20 +/- so I felt this was excellent price point for excellent food. Overall Sofi was a great find !"

  • "The Italian food was excellent and the service warm and knowledgable. It feels like a family-owned restaurant (maybe it is) with just enough quaint touches to make it feel very intimate and inviting. I would definitely return."

  • "Let me start by saying that I'm very pleased to have Sofi in Printer's Row. The food at Sofi is excellent Italian, no frills fare. However the service is poor. You're left begging for attention when you need it. We've been to the restaurant four times and it has never been busy enough to warrant the poor, inattentive service. You can never locate your server when needed, he always creates some form of chaos with the meal and each time something went slightly wrong either with the meal or the bill. The owner was there but even he was attentive. Will the restaurant last–not with poor service. Let's hope they work on this."

  • "We went there before the symphony on a Saturday night. They were very warm and friendly. Waiter was professional, gave good advice on menu choices. The whole fish was amazing. The wine list was great and apple pie for dessert was great."

  • "The food is rather standard Italian. It is good, but nothing to write home about in Chicago. Outside of a large metro it would seem outstanding"

  • "This is a real find, a super super wonderful authentic Northern Italian cuisine that you could only find in Italy. Don't miss it, the menu is varied, beautifully cooked, presented, with top rate service and a great wine list. It is a real treasure of a restaurant, enjoy a great meal."

  • "food great but service leaves a lot to be desired. We waited while all the tables around us that spoke Italian were served even though they were seated after us. We felt like second class diners."

  • "All of us who live in Printers Row are thrilled to have Sofi in our neighborhood. Great food, people bird prints. I've been there, I think, 9 times in the 4 months they've been open and have loved every meal and experience. Great to see that they are so busy every night. Hope they stay here forever."

  • "The food was OK, but the portions were very small. Our waitress 'recommended' (tried to sell us) a more expensive bottle of wine before she knew which entrees we were going to order. I challenged her recommendation, and told her what we were going to order. She then admitted that our original choice was a better selection. We didn't really see her much the rest of the night. She didn't check on us until we were almost finished, and didn't refill our wine - we had to do that (even though I waited quite a while to give her a chance to do so). After the meal we had about 1.5 glasses left in the bottle. THEN she emptied the bottle into our glasses. We were going to take it home with us-oops, not anymore. For these prices, the service was poor."

  • "Great food.. The closest thing around to dining in Italy."

  • "Everything was just great. The food was wonderful. I had the Boccala (sp?) with a creamy polenta. It was fabulous. We had a 7:30 reservation and were seated within minutes of our arrival. The service was great very attentive but not intrusive. You did not feel rushed. There was a little hic-up in the timing on one of the entrees but they handled it like pros. I would definitely go back again and would highly recommend it."
