Sociale (say - "SO-SHEE-AH-LAY!") was born in the bistros of Florence and raised here in Presidio heights. Laughter and Italian music are heard floating up from the star-lit, heated patio greeting you from the discreet garden alley below. Families and friends leaving the frenetic pace of the city behind can experience a lighter and decidedly more Italian mood celebrating in our new private dining room, the traditional room or on the patio as the irresistible scents of warm pastas, herb-infused meats, and the sweet honey and nut coated sfingi with vanilla bean gelato shake permeate the surrounding space. Bewitching and eclectic wines from Italy and California complement the weekly changing menus that Chef Tia Harrison crafts with joy and delight for our neighborhood friends!Continued

  • "Northern Italian cuisine is a personal sweet spot, and this is the best I've tried in many years. I had the pork chop, which was butchered in house, and it was fantastic. I can't wait to go back to try a bottle from their extensive Italian wine list (including a Ghemme, which is a rare treat in California). We dined indoors, but the outdoor seating looked quite appealing. The staff is crisply professional and knowledgeable."

  • "Two of us ordered the shrimp/lobster pasta special for $18 each. There was very little shrimp and less lobster. The sauce was bland to the point of being insipid Two of us each ordered the small WAGYU BAVETTE steak for $33, which was very well prepared; the accompanying potato and artichoke bits were tasty. The wine, a nice Aglianico, was $36 the least expensive red on the list. The price (four entrees, one salad, and s bottle of wine) approached $100 per couple. The service was friendly and competent. We eat out frequently and love good Italian cuisine and wine. Given the very poor value, and the availability of other truly outstanding Italian restaurants in S.F., it will a long time before we risk another disappointment at Sociale."

  • "WE WERE IMPRESSED!! We have been to Sociale several times, but not in the last year. We always sat outside because the dining room was crowded, hot & noisy......UNTIL NOW: they expanded & remodeled, and now the room is spacious, calm & lovely. The food was interesting & delicious, the service was top-notch. They just elevated themselves in our minds to one of our favorite restaurants. We are eager to return. We were with the same friends with whom we dined at Sociale the last time and they felt the same way. What a wonderful surprise!"

  • "First time to Sociale Wednesday night. Very cute hidden alley entrance and candle lite patio. Very warm and romantic ambiance on the patio, felt a little like a cozy dinner party outside. Not sure what it looks like in the daylight. Food was good, but definitely not up to par with many handmade pasta places in SF. I would definitely go back for a change of pace from other SF eateries..."

  • "Running 30m late for a Friday 8pm reservation is never a good thing. The gracious hostess was very accommodating, showing me to where we would eventually be sitting. I've had a chance to eat here 2-3x in past few months, the food here is exceptional, pairing quite well with a broad wine program. My date ( a first date, no less) and I enjoyed a great evening of quiet conversation and great food. Service was timely with each course landing at the table with the appropriate break. Can't say enough, really wonderful dining experience."

  • "2:15 reservations are offered but guests are not warned they have only five minutes to order and cannot order anything that takes more than 10 minutes to prepare. The male waiter is inept- brought us still water instead of sparkling. The two fish dishes I tasted - bluenose bass and petrale sole were nondescript. Overall, the quality of food and service is not what it used to be."

  • "My wife and I"s third visit over last 2-3 years. 1st was a good experience with excellent food, ambiance and service. Disappointed with 2nd visit primarily in the quality of the food. Gave another try but again disapointed. Were sat in the expansion area and did not find it as romantic as the front. Also there was a large party that were very loud and we were unable to carry out regular conversation. The service however was outstanding. I would love to be a returning customer however the food, noise levels, and ambiance do not allow me to justify paying a wine/meal bill of 100$+."

  • "My wife and I had wanted to go to Sociale for a while, ever since seeing it featured on Check Please. Nestled away down a corridor, it gave off a good impression off the bat with its nice outdoor patio and quaint neighborhood restaurant atmosphere. The service was also very good. The food was far below expectations though. We had the braised pork gnocchi and the papparedelle with braised duck, and both were overcooked. The gnocchi in particular was mushy and the pork dried out. The duck was a little dry, but the noodles and sauce were very good. Not horrible, but I had higher expectations. It was also fairly loud (we at inside), so not a place for a quiet, romantic dinner. We liked the atmosphere and the service was good though."

Service was attentive without being overbearing, ambience was friendly, dishes were hot (that's an oft-overlooked but always appreciated factor) and, more importantly the food was delectable. If all you order is an entree you might leave a tad hungry. But that's just it -- the salads, soups, sides and desserts are excellent. Wine list is helpful for dopes like me; the selection is mostly Italian but the reds section mentions wines that are similar to cabs, merlots, pinots (I didn't check the white-wine list). I won't wait another 10 years to visit again."

We had asked to be seated in a particular area ahead of time and told the hostess we were celebrating a 78th birthday. We were put in the new additional room next to a huge table and were disappointed that our request was not honored. We dine here quite often and come mainly for special occasions since it's over an hour drive for us. We will continue to come but hope that in future we will receive better seating."

Food was cold when it reaches our table, bread was not brought out during our wait for food to arrive. Preparation and ingredients used are not out of the ordinary. Overall, we are expecting more from this 'neighborhood gem' as touted on the reviews."

  • "This was probably my fifth time at this restaurant. I've always enjoyed the food and the service in the past. This was my first time visiting after they expanded the restaurant. We were seated in the new restaurant which was not as warm and cozy as the original room. The reason I would never go back is that the busboy and the server were constantly asking us if we were done and attempted to clear out table before we were ready. This happened with appetizers, entree and dessert. It was ridiculous."

  • "My friend and I both ordered from the DAT menu. Unlike the choices at many other restaurants, we found the DAT menu generous, in terms of quality of the ingredients and portion sizes. The choices included scallops, steak salad, and quail. When we couldn't decide on the wine, the waiter had the host help us, and his recommendation paired very well with the food. We will definitely be back to explore the menu."

  • "We chose this restaurant because of all the fantastic reviews on Open Table. They were absolutely right, the food is exquisite! I would just recommend ordering off the regular menu, and not the "Dine Around Town" menu. The fish choice had two mussels (that were open), two 1" pieces of sole and LOTS of potato. We were so hungry after the fish course that we ordered another plate of bread, and I NEVER fill up on bread. The other diners who ordered off the main menu had much more respectable portions."
