Socarrat Paella Bars ambiance denotes feelings of warmth, comfort and hospitality. A neighborhood staple with a small, intimate space comprised primarily of one large communal table with bar and smaller communal tables available.

**Please note that all of our tables at the Chelsea location are high tops and our chairs are without backs.**

Socarrat, the quintessence of the perfect paella and for which the restaurant is named, is the delectable, sensuous crust that forms on the
bottom of the paella pan when the liquid is rendered and the rice reaches its peak of succulence. The menu, an authentic array of delicious dishes from the regions of Spain specializing in traditional tapas with an accent
on paella and fideua (which substitutes fried noodles for rice) that can be characterized as a true exploration for the palette.

Socarrat also offers two dozen tapas, wines by the glass, Spanish desserts, and the best sangria in the city.

  • "The last time I visited this restaurant was when it first opened years ago. At that time they did not even have a liquor license; but time has passed, they've expanded to occupy the location next door, they've opened up a few other locations throughout the city and they now serve alcohol. You used to have to go to the wine store on the corner, which by the way is no longer there, now the waiter brings it to you. Although many things have changed, what remains the same is the excellent quality of the paella. Socarrat, in my opinion is still the best Spanish cuisine I have tasted in the United States, no other restaurant is even close."

  • "I thought this place was OK, but I wasn't impressed by anything in particular. I had Serrano Ham croquettes and the Galician Octopus. The octopus was tender and expertly cooked, but a bit bland for me. The Croquettes on the other hand were nice and creamy on the inside with a smoky flavor from the ham, while crunchy on the outside..that was my favorite bite of the night. I ordered the Socarrat paella as an entree, which had plenty of meat and seafood, but I wasn't impressed with the flavor of the rice. All I could taste was salt..no spices, not the flavor of the meats infused in there. The burnt parts on the bottom didn't give off a pleasant flavor. It was OK overall, but not what I expected based on the rave reviews."

  • "We wanted a place near the Joyce for a late post-show dinner, and while we were a little hesitant to try Socarrat, due to their seating being only on high backless stools, we decided to try it - and we're so glad! The stools were no problem, being large and padded. For this first visit, we went for tapas rather than paella, and all of them were excellent - especially the two pork dishes, tocino (pork belly) and cochinillo (suckling pig). But this was hands-down the best sangria I've ever tasted - fruity and full-bodied without being too sweet. I'm looking forward to our next visit, so I can have another glass - and try the paella!"

Each time we have been seated the in main bar room with the high tables. This room offers such great ambiance It's small yet cozy. The wait staff is always upbeat and friendly. The shrimp in garlic sauce and the potatoes bravas are a must order. Soccarat is truly a great neighborhood gem !!!!!"

The service wasn't good at all, they took forever to bring everything to the table and they didn't coordinate to bring the entrees for each person. My father got his entree first than me and my mother and they bring our entrees 10 minutes after. "

  • "i'd been wanting to have dinner here when i was living in nyc, but didn't make the time. so, i finally went during a visit, and it was well worth it. it's a small, dark restaurant, so it's great for a dinner for 2 or a party of 4 or 6. all of the food was just right: the cocktails, the tapas (the sesame seared tuna is divine), and the cordero paella was really great. i learned afterward that the black rice is really good, so if i go back, i will have that for sure!"

  • "The seating situation here is a bit tight...most of our dinner was spent stuck in the conversation of the loud people to our side. Because seating is at along tables, this is unavoidable. Food was ok, nothing fantastic. I would recommend looking elsewhere for good paella."

  • "We have been dining here way before it was declared a hot spot by the Times a few years back. We live on the same block only a few buildings away. The sea food paella is still a stand out, although the "socarrat" ie burnt crisp rice at bottom of the kettle is hardly there anymore. Gone are th days when the waiter/bar tender scrapes the bottom with grating sound of delight. It was a novel experience to sit at the main bar and mingle with strangers. Now, for the most part, we have sat on very uncomfortable high table and rickety high chairs in the added space. The service is efficient but impersonal. "

  • "I was a bit underwhelmed by this restaurant, given the glowing reviews. The first thing that struck me was the smell of iodine (past fresh seafood) as I walked in, and this was not a good sign. The food, fortunately, was pretty good, though the special beet salad was underseasoned and one of the mussels in the paella had not opend up and should never have been served. The paella itself was quite good and plentiful. I would be willing to try this place again."

  • "This is the best Paella I've had in New York City. Prepared in the classic Spanish style in a moderately thin layer baked in a cast-iron pan and served sizzling hot. The rice layer closest to the pan is a crispy crust, while above it is tasty and delicious. Plenty of "stones" (as the Spanish say) and wonderful flavor. While your Paella is cooking, order some tapas. Great cheeses, meats, and vegetables. When I say fit for foodies, I mean serious foodies. Yum!"

  • "This was a fun place to go for my husband's birthday. We were seated at a communal table sandwiched between other diners. Fun to talk about what we were ordering and getting suggestions from others. My only complaint was that we would have liked to have tried the paella, but there is a 2 portion minimum requirement. If you are only going there with 2 people, you really need to decide between the tapas and the paella. We went the tapas route (which was great), but would have liked to sample at least one of the paella dishes. Would be fun to go to with a big group."

  • "This was my second visit to Socarrat Chelsea. First time was with a large group of 10. This visit was just 3 people. Food lived up to expectations. My guests were first time visitors to this spot and they were both satisfied with their meals. Offers a nice change of pace to the "typical" saffron rice paella you get everywhere else. This really feels and tastes more authentic. No complaints."

  • "This is our second visit and not the last. Paellas with a crust are very flavorful! Tapas are delicious as well. We were there for brunch when they were not very busy, and service was very attentive.I wish they had larger glasses for Sangria; in a regular wine glass it feels like there are only a few sips given all the ice. Its a perfect place after seeing a show at the Joyce theater as they are across the street."

  • "We have heard this is perhaps the best restaurant for paella. Having recently traveled to Barcelona and Valencia we were eager for a taste of Spanish food. Our paella was delivered overlooked and dry. The seafood was in a rubbery state. It seems the waiter knew the food was subpar because he never came back to the table to check on us and avoided eye contact. Thankfully, the wine was excellent. There are much better options for Spanish-Mediterranean food in NYC."

  • "I had a good experience with one very bad turn off:, and it wasn't the food or the service... It was the fact that because I had made an online reservation, I was obliged to take a seat at a table vs. at the bar (all had open seats), and was thereby prohibited from paying happy hour special prices (1/2 off the meal). I was there early, and my friend and I were able to sit at a table by ourselves- otherwise, I think this place sits people from different parties together!"
