Socarrat Paella Bars ambiance denotes feelings of warmth, comfort and hospitality. A neighborhood staple with a small, intimate space comprised primarily of one large communal table with bar and smaller communal tables available.

**Please note that all of our tables at the Chelsea location are high tops and our chairs are without backs.**

Socarrat, the quintessence of the perfect paella and for which the restaurant is named, is the delectable, sensuous crust that forms on the
bottom of the paella pan when the liquid is rendered and the rice reaches its peak of succulence. The menu, an authentic array of delicious dishes from the regions of Spain specializing in traditional tapas with an accent
on paella and fideua (which substitutes fried noodles for rice) that can be characterized as a true exploration for the palette.

Socarrat also offers two dozen tapas, wines by the glass, Spanish desserts, and the best sangria in the city.

My guests were first time visitors to this spot and they were both satisfied with their meals. Offers a nice change of pace to the "typical" saffron rice paella you get everywhere else. This really feels and tastes more authentic. No complaints."

  • "This is our second visit and not the last. Paellas with a crust are very flavorful! Tapas are delicious as well. We were there for brunch when they were not very busy, and service was very attentive.I wish they had larger glasses for Sangria; in a regular wine glass it feels like there are only a few sips given all the ice. Its a perfect place after seeing a show at the Joyce theater as they are across the street."

  • "We have heard this is perhaps the best restaurant for paella. Having recently traveled to Barcelona and Valencia we were eager for a taste of Spanish food. Our paella was delivered overlooked and dry. The seafood was in a rubbery state. It seems the waiter knew the food was subpar because he never came back to the table to check on us and avoided eye contact. Thankfully, the wine was excellent. There are much better options for Spanish-Mediterranean food in NYC."

  • "I had a good experience with one very bad turn off:, and it wasn't the food or the service... It was the fact that because I had made an online reservation, I was obliged to take a seat at a table vs. at the bar (all had open seats), and was thereby prohibited from paying happy hour special prices (1/2 off the meal). I was there early, and my friend and I were able to sit at a table by ourselves- otherwise, I think this place sits people from different parties together!"

  • "Food was great: octopus tapas was excellent as was lamb tapas; seafood seviche very flavorful and 2 lobster tales. Thanks to our waiter who was very good about helping us order to avoid a clam allergy, even suggesting a switch to vegetable broth from fish broth in the paella. Excellent food."

Have returned three or four times since, and the quality of the paella has diminished each time. Bland, undercooked. And the backless stools at the communal table are very uncomfortable. Still very popular though, so a lot of people must still be impressed. I'd probably return if someone wanted to go there, but will otherwise give it a break for a while."

  • "Great Paella, had that burnt bottom you get with someone who knows what they are doing with paella downside, hostess insisted on seating everyone next to each other at one end of long table. when my friend and i were seated we were warned not to put our coats on the seat next to us as she intended to seat someone there even though there were 8 more places open. we were seated next to group with a shrieking laugher. next couple that came in said they wanted to go someplace less crowded and hostess simply said "ok" and let them leave instead of offering them the place at the end of the table. driving away business that had already walked in the door. next couple simply moved themselves down to the end after she left."

  • "The tapas here are quite tasty if not delicious. The host and hostess were kind, warm and welcoming. What was NOT appreciated was the snobby Catalan waiter who was rude, not attentive, and chose not to provide any recommendations when asked. Typical Spanish attitude---and I am a native Spanish speaker and I tried to engage him in conversation to lighten him up---he ignored me, continued in English, despite the fact that he spoke to the other wait staff who were from Latin America in Spanish. For these kind of prices, who needs such an attitude?? While he may be the only typical thing about the this Spanish tapas place---they should leave it to the rest of the staff who may not be from Spain, but they are certainly more welcoming than him."

  • "I choose Socarrat since it was close to the Joyce theater. We were seated at a long family style table across from each other. Since it was not crowded it was spacious, but I could see how it would be uncomfortable at full capacity. Ordered the signature gin & tonic and it was great. Was a little confused on the menu, but waiter informed me that a double order of the Paella was the minimum. My mother wanted a different paella, but we decided to go with the house and both enjoyed it. The waiter mentioned that you could order single portions for lunch or brunch."

  • "I took my girlfriend here for her birthday. It was a busy Friday night but it never felt loud and we weren't crowded. The place has a warm and festive vibe. The food is delicious - by far the best paella I've had - and the Spanish wine list is the perfect compliment. We were late for our reservation but they found us a great spit anyway. Everybody was very friendly and accommodating. A fun, intimate, comfortable evening. My girlfriend was very happy."

  • "A remarkable side-street gem with two nicely done rooms, one called the restaurant and one called the wine bar. The menu features delicious classical paellas cooked properly in large cast-iron pans so that the rice at the bottom gets properly crusty. The tapas selection provides appetizers to nibble while the Paella is cooking. I have only been there for lunch, but it has become my favorite lunch place in the vicinity ... it is quiet enough that you can hold a conversation without struggling to hear or to be heard."

  • "Went as a group of three. The bar was crowded, and the servers had to keep moving in between people. We were seated at a small table in the side room. It was nice for us. There was a large communal table near us that was a little noisy. Overall the food was good. We had paella, grilled vegetables and patatas brava. Everything was good. They brought us the wrong paella at first, which wasn't a problem except for the fact that one person in our party does not eat red meat. The server eventually figured it out after we spent a little time trying to decide if the meat was chicken or pork. Service was a little slow."

  • "Strongpoint is the ambiance - great music playing at the perfect volume so it's not too loud nor too soft. Easy conversation and no rush to get out, especially during brunch. Food is average (please note I did not have the paella). I think the portions are on the smaller side. I think next time if we come here, we will do the paellas and can comment on them. Service is average. The waiter is great and friendly, but there was only one, and the food took a while to come out (a really long while). They did come out together though, so that was a plus."

  • "I was eager to try this spot out as I offer Paella for a crowd as a choice for my catering business. The atmosphere was excellent - very exuberant, but not so loud I couldn't carry on conversation with my dining companions. Service from the get go was top notch. The Tapas were excellent -we had several and all were delicious. The Sangria is excellent if not cheap. I was a little disappointed in the Paella. It is the signature dish of the place and I was hoping to be blown away. We chose the Valencia which had Rabbit, Pork, Snails and vegetables. The rabbit and the pork were dry and a little bland and there was not much rice. Everything else was so good the just OK Paella was a let down."

Go off hours (if there is such a thing), unless you like shouting to be heard and requesting your companions to repeat themselves endlessly. I couldn't wait to get out."

  • "This was my first paella since I had some in Barcelona. We had the signature paella, and sampled three apprtizers off of the happy hour menu. All was very, very good except for the calamari which was just a tad overcooked but extremely flavorful. Rose sangria was very good too. A nice quiet place for my husband and I to have a romantic dinner, but if you are a group bigger than two, you will be seated at a high table with no chair back. That may or may not be uncomfortable for some, didn't bother us."
