A word from Socarrat - Chelsea
Socarrat Paella Bars ambiance denotes feelings of warmth, comfort and hospitality. A neighborhood staple with a small, intimate space comprised primarily of one large communal table with bar and smaller communal tables available.

**Please note that all of our tables at the Chelsea location are high tops and our chairs are without backs.**

Socarrat, the quintessence of the perfect paella and for which the restaurant is named, is the delectable, sensuous crust that forms on the
bottom of the paella pan when the liquid is rendered and the rice reaches its peak of succulence. The menu, an authentic array of delicious dishes from the regions of Spain specializing in traditional tapas with an accent
on paella and fideua (which substitutes fried noodles for rice) that can be characterized as a true exploration for the palette.

Socarrat also offers two dozen tapas, wines by the glass, Spanish desserts, and the best sangria in the city.

I took 8 people out to dinner and we were all impressed with the quality of the food and the service. The paellas were fabulous and we all had a great time. This restaurant is a gem and we will be back.

If you specialize in paella, you better get it right -- and they don't here. Our platter was devoid of saffron taste or color, scattered with overcooked shellfish, nearly without the promised beef and chicken, and all on a base of greasy, flavorless rice with a gooey socarrat. Our charcuterie starter was ok, but the octopus starter featured slimy tentacles that we couldn't eat. Yuck to it all.

Fame has definitely taken its toll, The socarrat (crispy chewy rice at bottom of the pot) is nowhere to be found!!! Our Paella was as soggy as the the weather outside. The place remains popular but no longer has a crowd milling outside (okay, its getting cold outside). The service is cordial but inattentive. The stools are uncomfortable (always been) and the lighting is abysmal (always been). The main reason to come here is to taste what was once the best paella in town.

We hesitantly made a 10pm dinner reservation. Unfortunately, we were not seated until close to 11pm. The hostess bought us two appetizers and we ordered our paella ahead of time so that helped. The lobster and shrimp paella was excellent. Everything else was okay. A lot of the food was fried or battered and not what I was expecting. The server was friendly and did a pretty good job.

I went there to celebrate my birthday. The food was fabulous and fun, and the service was outstanding. Delicious paella. I loved the way they scrape the bottom at the end to get the crispy part of the rice. There's even a word for the crispy part. Thanks for a fun evening!

My husband and I had decide to a Spanish diner prior to our Flamenco dance at the Joyce Theater. The service was decent, the sea food paella unfortunately was dry, you had to scrap and search for the burned rice - unacceptable. The sea food and sangria was good but did not make it up for the dining experience. Will not return.

I live in the area and have been to Socarrat before. Recently. I made a reservation for a Thursday night and had multiple tapas and wine for 2. Shortly after receiving the check, even though the two tables near us were going, we were asked to leave. Despite the other tables leaving and the fact that we had been seated for just over an hour, we were told that they needed the table in a long speech which I eventually cut off because of how rude it was. I pointed out how incredulous I was from the treatment we were receiving and she just shrugged. It was not a busy night and I will not be returning. There were unable/unwilling to provide me the contact information for the management group but I will continue to attempt a formal complaint.

We dined here for the first time this weekend. The restaurant was recommended to us by a Spanish friend of ours. He said the food is authentic and delicious and he was right! We had two delicious tapas and then shared the Soccarat paella which was amazing. The server recommended a wonderful Spanish wine to compliment the food. We will be back!

Restaurant came highly recommended. Waiter was horrible, poor attitude non-attentive and forgot to place appetizer order with 45 minute wait for paella. Waiter only managing 6 tables of 2, so not particularly busy. First time in 20 years I left no tip, and would not go again. Very disappointing.

Our experience was significantly dampened by the waitress. No greeting, and startled when we said hello to her. Does not know how to smile - why is she in the service industry?? Filled our water in silence after we sat down and couldn't manage to say hello. Seemed distressed and slightly annoyed - hopefully just a bad day for her. When we pay all that money for a special night - we expect a WHOLE lot more. Needs to learn to smile, greet us, ask if we want a drink. Entire experience went downhill because of this. Went for dessert elsewhere since it was unpleasant. Busboys are delightful and should have received the entire tip! Seating is very uncomfortable! Paella very good but hard to enjoy with poor service and seating.

Our reservation was confirmed by phone a day ahead, so I was confident that we were on Socarrat's book. We were seated immediately, and the host was agreeable when we asked for a quiet corner table -- all hi-tops, by the way. Great brunch options in the Spanish category, enjoyable tapas to start, and the sangria was nicely fruity. We'll go back for a paella dinner in a few weeks after a Joyce Theater performance, a half a block away. Socarrat is a perfect addition to our Joyce Theater pre/post experiences.

Best paella ever. Tapas are also phenomenal although a bit pricy but the quality is top notch across the board. Only thing that could have been better was the sangria rose...but the red was better. Highly recommended, better than any other Spanish restaurant in town, Casa Mono included.

Had a 10 PM reservation and worried that we might be squeezed in at the end. No worries. We had plenty of time to have both paella and tapas, along with some really great sangria. The deserts and coffee and the end of the night were a perfect end to a great meal. The seating is communal but comfortable and there wasn't an item that we sampled that disappointed. We will definitely be back in the future - perhaps a little earlier to enjoy the ambiance and the food. One demerit, however - for a restaurant that can hold a couple hundred people, there was ONE toilet (not one bathroom - literally one toilet) on each side of the restaurant, which did cause some long lines. Expectant women and those that may need a bathroom quickly take note.

Only good thing was the red sangria. The octopus was not render and had a ton of slimy fat. Razor clams were like leather and had a ton of grit in them. Gazpacho had a bitter "old and used" olive oil taste....just terrible. Woukd never go back.

Great tapas, fresh-tasting sangria, and outstanding paella all served in rustic rooms with long communal tables. The server knew his food well enough that I'm certain that he is also a chef (perhaps the chef). I've eaten a lot of paellas in my life and I've even succeeded in making some that worked out quite well. This, however, was the best yet! I'll return, with each visit to this fair city, for another variety of their great paella.

I wouldn't take the trouble to write this if I didn't feel so strongly about it. I've been here several times, but this time, I was bringing important guests from Chicago, and wanted to share my "original" experience at the communal table. I particularly dislike the bar area for eating. I'd specifically asked to be seated at the communal table, and been reassured (twice) that that was indeed where we were being seated. When I turned up (on time), I was told rudely that it was simply not possible. I felt so cheated out of my experience, I don't feel like going back. I'd have gone elsewhere, like Salinas, which is gorgeous. This won't matter to most people, but it did, a lot, to me.

We discovered this place a few years ago. The food is always delicious and the service is the perfect balance of checking in without being intrusive. I checked "romantic" as a recommendation but that is hit or miss. It's a shared table/family style set up in most of the restaurant but there are two tops in the back that can be romantic as long as the noise from the groups isn't too intrusive. (The restaurant can't really control loud diners.) Because the paella price is per person, the bill can add up quickly, so we tend to go on special occasions or when the event for the evening is dinner. Not a place to go if you're rushing to a movie or the theater, but if you're going after, it's certainly a great place to end and evening.

The last time I visited this restaurant was when it first opened years ago. At that time they did not even have a liquor license; but time has passed, they've expanded to occupy the location next door, they've opened up a few other locations throughout the city and they now serve alcohol. You used to have to go to the wine store on the corner, which by the way is no longer there, now the waiter brings it to you. Although many things have changed, what remains the same is the excellent quality of the paella. Socarrat, in my opinion is still the best Spanish cuisine I have tasted in the United States, no other restaurant is even close.

I thought this place was OK, but I wasn't impressed by anything in particular. I had Serrano Ham croquettes and the Galician Octopus. The octopus was tender and expertly cooked, but a bit bland for me. The Croquettes on the other hand were nice and creamy on the inside with a smoky flavor from the ham, while crunchy on the outside..that was my favorite bite of the night. I ordered the Socarrat paella as an entree, which had plenty of meat and seafood, but I wasn't impressed with the flavor of the rice. All I could taste was salt..no spices, not the flavor of the meats infused in there. The burnt parts on the bottom didn't give off a pleasant flavor. It was OK overall, but not what I expected based on the rave reviews.
