A word from SoBou
One of the most important restaurants of 2013 by Zagat Magazine!
The Commander's Family of Restaurants returns to the French Quarter, where the family business began in the 1950's, with our Spirited Restaurant - SoBou. We're South of Bourbon (ok - it's really southeast), in the land of civilized drinking and worlds away from the oversized beers and bad frozen drinks. Our modern Creole saloon is a Louisiana-centric and street food inspired restaurant with a beverage focus.

Don't waste your time here! We were treated horribly by the staff from the minute we walked into the restaurant. Server wanted us to order food prior to even ordering a cocktail. Such a huge disappointment!

The Atmosphere are really cool with beer taps at your table, however when I went none of them were working. The food I was not impressed with. Very small selection....only three entrees to choose from and several small side dishes. I enjoyed the decor and overall place just disappointed with food selection and tap that was broken.

  • Sobou is a keeper!

If Commanders Palace is known for great creative Creole cooking, then Sobou is their teenager wanting to push the boundaries farther afield. More of a tapas bar, the appetizers are all interesting (try the tuna cones!) and none of their entrees are very expensive. But they all push boundaries and Nola-southwest-Asian fusions abound. A beautiful contemporary interior and interesting bar options like beer tasting tables make it a very happening place. Also has a decent but eclectic wine list. A great addition to the Nola restaurant scene!

French Quarter modern setting for breakfast. Food arrival was slow but once served it was quite good. My wife had the egg white frittata which she found to be exquisitely delicious. My shredded pork was partially tough, did not appear freshly prepared, and the dish was quite filling. The main problem was about a 30+ minute wait for food arrival when we had a tight schedule (and 1 of 2 tables in the place).

I went to Sobou with a large group. We are all from out of town and didn't have a clue where to make reservations. We looked at some things online and decided on Sobou. We were very happy with the service, food, and drinks. All left with a pair of sunglass's that came with a drink, we loved that!

I think this restaurant is overated. The food is good but very small plates. It's ashamed that we had the worst server in the restaurant. We took the Live to Eat menu and we were supposed the have a cocktail. I had to ask to receive it. We had no water, no bread and he never asked us if we wanted coffee. And when we received our check, he had the audacity to specify (twice) that we should give him 20% tip. Sorry but he received only 10% and I was very generous. Overall the food is good but the service poor. I am sorry for the comment and I never write a comment like that before but this time I had to make an exception.

Ordered from the restraint week menu. Everything was well presented and delicious. I had the steak.. it was perfectly cooked but the real stars were the vegetables . The charred corn and the sautéed mushrooms were memorable. Not something I usually say about vegetables. Beautiful restaurant / beautiful food.

Happened to be here during restaurant week so though I was traveling solo I did not want to miss out on the opportunity to try some of the great NOLA restaurants. Aside from the usual dismay that I was just a party of one (solos always get seated somewhere in the back or upstairs), this was a great experience. I had already read about the famous daily "punch" and as soon as I sat down they brought me some. Cold, refreshing and potent!Selected the Blue Crab and corn bisque to start. Perfectly seasoned, with a great fresh corn taste and a subtle kick from the ghost peppers. For my entree I had the steal that came with grilled mushrooms. The steak was good, but the mushrooms were legendary. The Bushwacker Banana dessert was boozy delicious.

My second time to Sobou, this time for a special dinner with my foodie inclined daughter. They have small shareable plates that cross upscale street food with a Cajun touch. We had the tuna cones, artichoke tamales (my favorite), gumbo which was quite good, shrimp pinchos with grilled pineapple, and sewer potato beignets with duck debris (daughters favorite). Service was great and the bottle themed decor is charming.

I really wanted to like this place, but the service was nonchalant and slow. The food tasted good, but was a little high in price. The look of the restaurant is really nice though. I think this is one of those places that needs a little time to get into it's groove... and then will really be a great find in the city

SoBou has a great cocktail list and fantastic mod decor. The menu updates frequently, but we really enjoyed the tapas style. The gumbo was not as spicy as I prefer, but otherwise the meal was excellent fom start to finish. Ask for a seat away from the walls. The air conditioning vents line the walls and several people in our area complained about being to chilly. The manager was quick to address the complaints. This design flaw knocked a star from my review.

My wife and I, celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary, wanted to go to a nice French Quarter dinner. We've been to Commander's Palace in the Garden District several times and have always been pleased. We wanted to give SoBou a try. They exceeded our expectations on every level! Our server, Howard, was exceptional. Although he is a captain at Commander's (I gather staff moves back and forth on occasion) He was exceedingly knowledgeable of the menu and bar options. His level of service was without compare. He wasn't over the top, nor was he inattentive. He struck a perfect balance, while managing other tables within his section. Because it was a special occasion for my wife and I, we were visited by multiple staff members, which was nice!!

I went to SoBou for Brunch over this past weekend and left, sadly, a bit disappointed. I went with a group, and we all had left thinking the portioning was just a bit short of what we had expected. The flavors were unique, the plates well presented, but at the end of the day, I really don't enjoy leaving brunch that hungry. Unfortunately, in the city of NOLA surrounded by great restaurants, I feel this experience was towards the bottom. Also, minor detail, but I had ordered soup/sandwich combo which was quoted at $14...but billed at $8 for each, so a bit of an inconsistency.

...doesn't mean you have to eat like it's 1815. Instead, it's 2015 or thereabouts, and here's a Brennan/Commander's Palace family restaurant that recognizes its food heritage but doesn't simply re-create the old favorites. It builds on them, deconstructs a bit, tweaks a little more, and comes up each time a nice result.

Friend in town 1st time: 30th bday (noted on res). Knew she was going to be proposed to right after dinner! I'm local and chose SoBou for the hip ambiance. Arrived just at the end of happy hr, almost empty. Sat in the bar @a 6 top, so one of us sat awkwardly in the middle seat in front if a table leg. Extra place settings left. Sat next to LOUDEST tbl. Waitress didn't know the ingredients in the drinks. Food came out with the onions we requested to be left off. Told waitress we would order dinner after happy hr, took menus anyhow and didn't return for a long time. Forgot H2o. Didn't come to refresh cocktails. Weren't offered, but passed on bday dessert. FANTASTIC food/drinks! Underwhelming service/ambiance.

Two of us went for dinner with a reservation. Everything seemed excellent: ambience, service, and drink selection. We like tapas and really looked forward to trying 4 different dishes to savor a few items. Two of them were great: gumbo and tuna; one was pretty good: smashed red beans; and one we sent back: shrimp. Nonetheless, the one issue was quickly resolved and we enjoyed our visit.

We went here upon recommendation of a server from Sobu's sister restaurant. The ambience was charming and the service excellent. The desserts were phenomenal (cherries jubilee bread pudding and pecan pie), but we were led to believe the chef would be able to accommodate for vegetarians. Although decent, we ended up eating a plate of vegetables. They did not have any bread/rice or other accompaniments. The appetizers were delicious (Brussels sprouts and grits). The non vegetarian thoroughly enjoyed the meal. Overall still very good, but a struggle for veggie entrées.
