A word from SoBou
One of the most important restaurants of 2013 by Zagat Magazine!
The Commander's Family of Restaurants returns to the French Quarter, where the family business began in the 1950's, with our Spirited Restaurant - SoBou. We're South of Bourbon (ok - it's really southeast), in the land of civilized drinking and worlds away from the oversized beers and bad frozen drinks. Our modern Creole saloon is a Louisiana-centric and street food inspired restaurant with a beverage focus.

Our experience at SoBou was notable for the service, and the cocktails. The manager went out of his was and above and beyond to compensate us for two small issues. We will be back with friends for cocktails, but I don't think we'll come for a first choice for dining. We ordered the fish and the steak, neither of which were bad, but they were also not notable.

The tap in the table is such a unique item. I loved it. Those tables would be great for groups of friends looking for a place for drinks and snack food after work. Better happy hour place than dinner place.

We had a wonderful time at SoBou. The food and service were amazing, and the operations supervisor Trey went out of his way to make sure we had everything we needed. The waitress was warm and personable, the bartender (who just won an award for Best Bartender in New Orleans) made us a special fall punch to sample, and the Nola BBQ Cochon de lait with fried Shrimp Sandwich was out of this world. Though not from New Orleans, SoBou will be on our list of places to return to in the future.

Came to SoBou with a group of friends from college who were in town for homecoming. We ordered five starters and one main dish to share. Everything was amazing! The Boudin Balls, Cracklins, Tuna Escabeche, Sweet Potato Beignets, and Mushroom and Artichoke Tamales were the starting and I seriously can't decide which was best! They were all delicious. Then we did the Pumpkin BBQ Grilled Texas Quail. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone and can't wait to come again and try different dishes. They were very accommodating when I called to up the number in my reservation party, and the service was incredible!!

Overall great time with great food service and fun. The downside was my husband checked his hat with the hostess and it disappeared. These things happen but I'm very disappointed with the follow- up. We were contacted by the Risk Management part of the corporation about their investigation and review of security cameras however we were not contacted by the restaurant side of management to just offer condolences and an assurance that they would make it right. It's been 3 nights ago without anyone doing or saying the right thing.

We'd been to the bar and enjoyed the drinks immensely; we had theater tickets nearby so made a reservation for dinner. Unfortunately we were running a few minutes late, but had no trouble getting seated. We were seated near a window overlooking the street, but under the AC duct which seemed to be running on one of New Orlean's chillier autumn nights. Our waiter was very nice and helpful, but overall service seemed busy. We put in an order for a couple of small plates (lamb skewers, shrimp skewers, and boudain balls) and one steak to share. The small plates came out relatively quickly, and all were good to very good. Unfortunately our steak took a long time to come out. There was a LARGE group in the bar and they seemed to have ordered many small plates that may have backed the kitchen up. We waited at least 20 if not 25 minutes for our steak (skirt steak, ordered medium). Our waiter brought us some free pork cracklins to apologize for the delay which was appreciated. The steak arrived slightly undercooked, but was otherwise delicious and the highlight of the food we tried. Normally a long wait between apps and an entree wouldn't be a big deal, but the delay was so atypically long that we ended up missing our theater show. I take responsibility for not giving our waiter a heads up that we were on a tighter-than-usual timeline, but a good meal was soured by the kitchen delay which resulted in our missing a show on date night. I'd order food again on my next trip to the bar if I need something to soak up some alcohol.

We were really excited to try Sobou while we were visiting. Overall the food and concept of the restaurant were great. It just felt that our host, server and the food in general lacked attention to detail. We had to ask for our small plates after our main meal was served. Apparently, our order was forgotten. The server was kind and sweet but was hard to find on several occasions. The food was cold but still tasted good. I feel like this was a mediocre dining experience that could have been fantastic. It lacked the finesse that is commonly seen with Commanders Palace.

Overall very trendy place and has a bar vib. Possibly a bit tooo trendy however. The food overall was good but a bit overly complicated. Portion size of the large bites should have been larger for the cost. This place however is a nice contrast to more traditional restaurants in the French Quarter.

Food was good, but not exceptional. We tried several menu items. Some items were overly creative and didn't deliver on flavor. The staff was amazing and attentive, but the dining experience itself including the seating, wine list, casual atmosphere, etc. makes it feel like a nice hotel lobby bar. Go for treats or a drink, but NOT for dinner!

My husband and I were visiting NOLA and saw that a new restaurant (new to us!) was in the former Bacco's location. Having really enjoyed the Bacco's, we decided we wanted to go back to our old favorite location and find out about this place and their new menu that sounded so creative and original. We had excellent drinks (Georia O'Keefes) and wonderful flavors in the small plates that we shared and two larger entrees that worked well in combination. The place is lovely with walls filled with lights and shelves of glass bottles....very interesting and original! We will be back!!!!

We had a wonderful dinner on a Saturday night and went back for brunch the next day and in both cases it was really just on a whim with no advanced planning. The small and large plates were great for sharers like us, and the Qual to share was to die for. We had great servers during both meals, but the kitchen was a little slow and pacing impacted an otherwise fantastic meal. As luck of the draw would have it we encountered some really noisy patrons in our back to back meals, but this is not the restaurants fault. Nice room, but definitely not a cosy hideaway.

A very unique tapas place with some dishes you wouldn't fine anywhere else, eg, the yellow fin tuna cones. Best to try many of these to get a taste of the variety they offer. Some dishes, like the fondue pate I would pass on, they are just large balls of flour. But others are a must such as the spicy shrimps on skewers. Staff are nice but not very knowledgeable about the food, other than, "I really like that dish or many people order that one"

SoBou dining was very good. The food is creative, interesting, and all was delicious. We had a couple of appetizers (the tuna/pineapple ceviche with avocado basil ice cream cones; the grilled shimp skewers with pineapple). I had the steak and my friend had the surf & turf. Both were very good. And the Chocolate Coma bar for dessert is awesome. The pricing for this type of dining was also very respectable. Two appetizers, two entree's, a dessert, and we both had drinks. And it was only $80. The service was outstanding. My only negative would be the acoustics are a little loud.

We saw an ad in a hotel dining guide and since it was close to our hotel, we thought we'd give it a try for lunch. We were impressed by the service, ambiance, 25 cent martini's at lunchtime and most of all, the food! My husband fell in love with the fresh pork rinds for $1 and I could not believe how tasty the sweet potato beignets were! No wonder that the service and food were top notch since they are part of the Commanders' Palace group. The next night, when trying to decide where to go to dinner, I could not help but find a way to go back to SoBou. SO GLAD WE DID! After being seated immediately, we enjoyed an amazing dinner with excellent service. The food in NOLA is outstanding however SoBou was really the highlight of the week.

First of all, the food is different. Not your usual combination of ingredients on the plate. That being said, it was quite tasty. Ordinarily, I would never think to combine rum soaked pineapple with shredded BBQ pork, but it works. The chicken and andouille gumbo was delicious: very dark roux, thick with a surprise of a potato ball instead of the traditional rice. So if you have an adventurous palate, you will enjoy SoBou.

Our server Mariah made the meal excellent. She made perfect recommendations and was incredibly friendly. At first, we weren't thrilled with our table as it had a beer tap in the middle. The beer we wanted was out, and the tap below kept half the table from being able to scoot in underneath it. We couldn't see each other through it, and the table next to us was screaming at a football game on TV. After a cocktail, the food began to arrive. While the food seemed fancy and complicated on the menu, everything was perfectly balanced and delicious. The standout for main courses was the whole fried fish. While it freaked me out, I'm told it was incredible! It was a great meal with excellent service. The noise and tables could be improved.

Although a native of New Orleans, I hadn't had a chance to dine at Sobou until my dear friend from New Mexico came for a visit. My son recommended Sobou as a good place to try, and I'm glad he did. My friend and I arrived 15 mins. early and were greeted and seated by the Sous Chef. The wait staff was accommodating without being annoying attentive. The chairs were a little uncomfortable for my ancient bones and could use a seat cushion. The cocktails were very good-a great blend of creativity, taste, and kick for .25 cents. The roasted pumpkin soup was a perfect started on a crisp Fall day. The Grilled fish was cooked to perfection. I won't wait for an out of town friend to visit before I visit Sobou again!

We had dinner Sunday night. Food was awesome. Very interesting combinations of food. As nice as the waiter was, everything took too long. After ordering desert, we wanted 27 minutes. Finally had to cancel the order and leave. Manager came over to tell us the charge had been removed from the bill. Removed the charge for food we never got? Big deal. In any case, I know they tried, and were friendly about it. Go for food!
