A word from SoBou
One of the most important restaurants of 2013 by Zagat Magazine!
The Commander's Family of Restaurants returns to the French Quarter, where the family business began in the 1950's, with our Spirited Restaurant - SoBou. We're South of Bourbon (ok - it's really southeast), in the land of civilized drinking and worlds away from the oversized beers and bad frozen drinks. Our modern Creole saloon is a Louisiana-centric and street food inspired restaurant with a beverage focus.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "SoBou has a great cocktail list and fantastic mod decor. The menu updates frequently, but we really enjoyed the tapas style. The gumbo was not as spicy as I prefer, but otherwise the meal was excellent fom start to finish. Ask for a seat away from the walls. The air conditioning vents line the walls and several people in our area complained about being to chilly. The manager was quick to address the complaints. This design flaw knocked a star from my review."

  • "Abigail and Aaron in the bar were outrageously good in the craft cocktail department (We stopped by on two occasions). The food was fresh and innovative, and the small palates concept let us try an great array of items. The restaurant space was very sleek and appealing - uniquely and tastefully decorated."

  • "...doesn't mean you have to eat like it's 1815. Instead, it's 2015 or thereabouts, and here's a Brennan/Commander's Palace family restaurant that recognizes its food heritage but doesn't simply re-create the old favorites. It builds on them, deconstructs a bit, tweaks a little more, and comes up each time a nice result."

  • "We loved the food and excellent service , will recommend to friends. The noise level is high but if you sit in the front of the restaurant it is bare able. Loved the valet parking and location!"

  • "Friend in town 1st time: 30th bday (noted on res). Knew she was going to be proposed to right after dinner! I'm local and chose SoBou for the hip ambiance. Arrived just at the end of happy hr, almost empty. Sat in the bar @a 6 top, so one of us sat awkwardly in the middle seat in front if a table leg. Extra place settings left. Sat next to LOUDEST tbl. Waitress didn't know the ingredients in the drinks. Food came out with the onions we requested to be left off. Told waitress we would order dinner after happy hr, took menus anyhow and didn't return for a long time. Forgot H2o. Didn't come to refresh cocktails. Weren't offered, but passed on bday dessert. FANTASTIC food/drinks! Underwhelming service/ambiance."

  • "Two of us went for dinner with a reservation. Everything seemed excellent: ambience, service, and drink selection. We like tapas and really looked forward to trying 4 different dishes to savor a few items. Two of them were great: gumbo and tuna; one was pretty good: smashed red beans; and one we sent back: shrimp. Nonetheless, the one issue was quickly resolved and we enjoyed our visit."

  • "We went here upon recommendation of a server from Sobu's sister restaurant. The ambience was charming and the service excellent. The desserts were phenomenal (cherries jubilee bread pudding and pecan pie), but we were led to believe the chef would be able to accommodate for vegetarians. Although decent, we ended up eating a plate of vegetables. They did not have any bread/rice or other accompaniments. The appetizers were delicious (Brussels sprouts and grits). The non vegetarian thoroughly enjoyed the meal. Overall still very good, but a struggle for veggie entrées."

  • "Sobou was a restaurant I was a little apprehensive about. The menu was crazy but you only live once and I wanted to try something fun and a little crazy. You must try to tuna cones! While the food was excellent the service left something to be desired."

  • "I selected this based on the other reviews citing ambiance and unique food. It took a long time to get menus, get our first appetizer. No snack food. Plus it was a special occasion which I notified them of but they did nothing about it. I would only recommend if you had a lot of time. Pricing was reasonable and food was both interesting and tasty. Portions are pretty small so order lot and early."

  • "It was an interesting evening at SoBou. Cocktails were excellent (Spanish Negroni) and we tried several different things on the menu to share. We loved the foie gras burger. The gumbo was excellent. Having the tappers on the table was something new as well as the wine coolers nearby. We would definitely go again when we're in town. Our waiter was great, too."

  • "I'll start by saying the food at Sobou was great. It sounds a little out-there when you're reading the menu, but everything tasted amazing. However, that's where the positives ended. First, they don't tell you that when you order the small plates that the price is per person (resulting in a $400 bill for 5 people). Then, there was over a 40 minute gap between our small plates and main dish, which is very unacceptable when paying so much to eat somewhere. We ended up canceling the sides we ordered to go with the main dish because they would have come out about 20 minutes after the main did. Lastly the waiter didn't remove the sides from the final bill, so we had to get that corrected. Overall, great good but not worth it for the price."

  • "Best experience!!! Service was outstanding and they took care of our group! Food was also amazing. You have to try the sweet potato beignets"

  • "Delicious food in a very nice Restaurant and Bar. You can find young and senior Costumers. Very nice dress up or not to nice. The food is the principal reason to visit the place. Great gastronomic experience. If you like cocktails the bartenders are some of the best in town. Is inside the W French quarter hotel."

  • "We have eaten at SouBou four times now and we have always been very impressed. As we had friends visiting from California who enjoy cutting edge restaurants and innovative food, we made SoBou a must for our dinner on 7/17. Unfortunately, Tales of the Cocktail was in town and the bar was bursting at the seams. It appears that the staff was overwelmed. We literally had to wait nearly 20+ minutes for cocktails. Our waitperson was going as fast as she could but the drinks and the food were coming out slowly from the bar and kitchen. I finally voiced my displeasure to the manager who rallied the troops and tried to make it right. However, by that time the experience was ruined."

  • "How to compare? No way! Service was Excellent! Attentive and friendly. An attractive, interesting room. Really one of the best in the U.S. Many come here just for the outstanding bar service, but they are missing the gem of the Quarter. Began oiur meal with rich Gumbo and Heirloom Tomato Salad with multiple varieties of tomatoes, beans, grilled summer corn, and arugula. My favorite. Our entree was the Chili Mustard Painted Red Fish. And treated with warm bread pudding with carmelized pecans and ice cream and pecan pie in a jar. Heaven!"

  • "This is a very interesting and exciting new cutting edge restaurant that has amazing food. Our service started out slow-- they forgot our wine order but after that it was very excellent. We had an assortment of the small plates and all were outstanding and so innovative. The roasted kale salad was the best salad any of us had ever tried. The Pineapple shrimp was so clever and very spicy but very nice. The bar was energitic and full of young hipsters. No table cloths here. This is a new age fine dining restaurant. We were stuffed and had cocktails and wine and our tab for 3 was only $150! Great value."

  • "Nice little restaurant, the food was excellent. We were seated right away with a reservation. It did take several minutes for our waiter to make it over and even longer to get our drinks, meal, and deserts."

  • "We visited SoBou as our first evening meal in N.O. The small plates concept was a fun way to try many things, and a conversation starter (not that we needed one). I was a little afraid it was going to be too precious for the guys, but it was not at all. Every dish was unpretentious, interesting, and delicious. The food here is clearly made with care. After several more days of eating our way through New Orleans, this was the meal we talked about on the drive back to Oklahoma. Another element to not be overlooked is the pleasant staff. Our waiter was excellent and understandably proud of the food he was serving."

  • "This is the hip little brother of the Commander's family. The menu is interesting and very well done. Treat it like tapas and order several dishes. The bar is top-notch. Recommendations: Sweet Potato Beignets and the Gatorcane cocktail."

  • "We consider ourselves foodies and look for an opportunity to eat good food since things are limited where we live. Made a trip to NOLA for the 4th and was looking forward to just that...good authentic NO cuisine with maybe a little upscale twist. Well, unfortunately not impressed in the least bit with our choice. Trying to hard to be eccentric and cutsie and missed the mark. Beef debris was ok but tasted like a slim jim. Can't say enough about the red beans...cold spicy refried bean dip...yuck!! Would not have thought that by reading the menu. Brownie dessert tasted like a banana moonpie. Definitely not for kids. Staff was friendly and accommodating, but service slow. Maybe good for late night drink and snacks...not for dinner."

  • "We went for lunch and loved the atmosphere, our service was great and for the most part our food was good. I had the sandwich with the shrimp and pork, the pork was extremely salty. We ordered and reordered several servings of the pork rinds. The gumbo, red beans and rice and fish were great. The .25 martinis were good and strong. So while the pork was salty I'd give them another shot."

  • "Definitely worth a stop in. Great quality food and excellent bartending. The prices are lower than what I'm used to for the quality. If I had to leave a complaint, the menu is a little small for a tapas style restaurant, but there's still more than any small group could venture to try. We had a great time, and I can easily see us venturing back."

  • "Although not a big dinner menu, we managed to snack our way thru quite a few small plates (the $1 pork cracklin' are great, the artichoke was tasty but definitely finger food, the brussel sprouts were the best). We selected the gulf fish and the beef for our entrees. The beef was outstanding, with a seasoning that made us think twice about ordering a 2nd. The cocktails were also very good and the service friendly."

  • "I knew it was going to be different dining experience. It was fun but the noise level was beyond regular conversation due in fact to several parties of young women who obviously thought they were the only ones in the restaurant. It is aimed more at at younger, hip crowd. We are older, in our 60's. I will only go back for lunch with friends, if at all. I am glad I gave it a try. The appetizers were incredible (beignets, shrimp) and the Surf and Turf was delicious, also. Very good cocktails. We did have to request waters and that always surprises me when that isn't immediately brought to a table. Just a curtesy I look forward to."

  • "This was my first time visiting New Orleans, and was so excited to have an opportunity to experience great restaurants. All that we went to were great except for SoBou. I had made a reservation, and they seated me in the front door. Our waiter was clueless about the menu...which has very limited selections. We had to ask for a wine list. The gumbo did not taste like gumbo....and I ended up getting a hamburger, since I am humanely opposed to fois gras....which seemed to be in most every selection on the menu. I would never go back to this restaurant...very disappointed."
