A word from SoBou
One of the most important restaurants of 2013 by Zagat Magazine! The Commander's Family of Restaurants returns to the French Quarter, where the family business began in the 1950's, with our Spirited Restaurant - SoBou. We're South of Bourbon (ok - it's really southeast), in the land of civilized drinking and worlds away from the oversized beers and bad frozen drinks. Our modern Creole saloon is a Louisiana-centric and street food inspired restaurant with a beverage focus.Continued

  • "Tuna cones excellent and unusual-great presentation. Shrimp and Tasso pinchos delicious and fun. Smashed red beans and ham hocks-best bean dip ever. Sweet potato beignets full of flavor BUT too many (5!) and too sweet-would make an awesome dessert! Very hip modern decor-not the usual NOLA scene, but a welcome change"

  • "Very cool place. Definitely an up-and-comer. Overall food was good. As the title indicates, the gumbo was a little too salty. The crispy chicken was amazing. Drinks were excellent. Pricing was very reasonable."

  • "A bit too noisy for conversation, however....it's New Orleans! The host/staff were exceptionally accommodating in order to seat our group. Food was terrific. "

  • "Food was outstanding, staff was friendly but we had to track down our waitress a couple of times to get drinks."

  • "Everything we had was off the charts! From the 25 cent martinis at lunch to the sweet potatoe beignet appetizer to the burger that will change your life! It's probably a good thing that I don't live in NOLA because I would weigh 300 pounds from eating there all the time!"

  • "Grizzly chicken in the salad, over-salted gumbo, 3 tiny oysters, whose batter was raw on one side, on the oyster po'boy, and a 25 cent martini that was caustic (we did not finish it). Get your act together, folks, this is beneath the Brennan family dignity! (Our waiter was a love and apologized for what he agreed what grizzly chicken and non-existent oysters). To be fair, the manager comped us, but we would have preferred, in the Brennan tradition, a stellar meal. Take a page from Sylvain's book, and what is with all of the frosted apothecary bottles--the theme relates to what? The pharmacy museum down the street?!"

  • "We went to the hostess stand to be seated. No one was there for a few minutes. Finally a woman arrived and I requested a table. This is literally how this went:"Oh, a table?Don't you want to sit at the bar","No thank you just came from there.I would like a table","Are you sure? The bar is nice","Yea, I know. Table please","But the tables are all dirty"(1.No they weren't 2.So what? Clean them),"Well then we'll take a dirty table","You really don't want to sit at the bar?","No!" That began the whole ordeal. There server was nice. The food was subpar. Both ordered the Angus rare. His was medium. Mine was medium-well. Would have sent it back (something I never do) but the waiter took 10-15 min to check on us.Didn't want to wait for a re-fire."

  • "In a town known for fine dining, SoBou is a contemporary addition to the scene. Each of the small and larger plates we ordered was beautifully plated and delicious. The service was warm and attentive and the ambience was "hip" to say the least. We'd rate SoBou as one of New Orleans best!"

  • "Among all the touristy spots in the FQ, this is a Neighborhood Gem. I never tire of it and if I can get a reservation then once a month for sure."

  • "I was in New Orleans for the weekend, and I happened to walk by this place and it looked tasty. I had a reservation from 9:15, and I was seated promptly at 9:15 (one of my pet peeves if it doesn't happen). My group of 6 had appetizers, entrees, dessert, and drinks. With my SPG elite discount (10%), the bill came out to $200. Service was good, but I would have appreciated being checked on a bit more often than the waiter did. The restaurant was quite loud, so it is probably not a great place for families or a romantic second date. Overall, the food was great, service was acceptable, and the price was reasonable. I would go again."

  • "I was disappointed when we realized it was a part of the W Hotel (I am not a fan of hotel restaurants). We were a little early, so wanted a cocktail first. The bar was full and the bartenders ignored us, chatted among themselves, left the bar, and really set the tone to what I thought was going to be a bad experience. When we got to our table we were pleasantly surprise to have a very attentive, helpful and fun waitress. We ordered a great bottle of wine and some apps, per her suggestion, all very tasty. For dinner, we split the family style duck dish, which without a doubt, was one of the best meals I have ever had, I am still dreaming about that homemade sausage concoction that our duck was resting on - simply decadent and delicious."

  • "Went for the foie gras burger. It was good, but not really worth the price tag. Still not convinced there was any foie gras in that root beer float..."

  • "Last night in New Orleans/French Quarters with good fiends. Enjoyed great food and service in very unique restaurant...back-lite glass bottles, local craft beer taps on our table, AND a selt-serve wine buffet with very nice wines. The wine is controlled with a smart card and diners are allowed to take 1 oz., 3 oz, or 6 oz. pours...lots of fun."

  • "This restaurant is in a W hotel. Awful dining experience. Long wait for waiter to take drink order. Never returned, had to track him down. Drinks came, One round of drinks was comped. Ordered from strange menu that's more like a bar menu. Half hour later waiter showed up and said one of ordered dishes wasn't available. One shared starter was fine, the rest was play food. Another half hour wait for food. Waiter never cleared the table after I asked for the check. This place needs an adult menu and adult staff. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, a big disappointment for a W hotel. I have friends coming to stay at this W and telling them not to bother with the restaurant."

  • "The surprising aspect of the meal wasn't the food, but the service. I do not know if our waiter was new or stressed, but he was certainly not attentive. After being seated for over 5 minutes, the waiter came to see if I wanted a drink. He didn't know if they had Guiness. It took him 15 minutes to find out, and then another 10 minutes before I had a drink in front of me. That's 30 minutes before being served just a drink. We were definitely ready to order food by that time, but he didn't take our food order for another 15 minutes. Our dining experience took 2 hours, and that's only because we cut it short because we had somewhere to be. We found this unacceptable for a total meal of 4 small plates and 4 drink orders for 2 people."

  • "We dined here for brunch and when we first walked in, the restaurant was almost completely empty at 11:30. Only a few other patrons came during our visit. The service was slow, and thd waitstaff seemed very inexperienced. The food was pretty good, but the sauce on my entree as well as my husband's (the same sauce on both) was overpowering. It would have been very good without it. We had cracklins for an appetizer, and they were the same kind you buy in a bag at the grocery store. I was expecting the real thing. I won't be back."

  • "The beignet appetizer was excellent. The Surf & Turf entree was creative - kind of a rif on Korean Bo Saam, using creole ingredients. Its pork was superb along with the pickled vegetable accompaniments; however its fried oysters were not crispy. It's a lovely restaurant but it needs to concentrate more on its food."

  • "This was a super restaurant. Our waitress was terrific with great recommendations, attentiveness and personality. The sommelier was a perfect compliment as well. Everything we ate was yummy but the fois gras burger was out if this world....maybe the best burger I have ever had. The menu was very interesting and the food performed higher than menu made you expect. It was a very vibrant environment as well."

  • "Sobou looked so promising. But it is part of a trend in restaurants. High end look and executive chef. But food was fair, service slow, and a wine list that was not too good. The night we went it was not busy, but noisy even with just two other tables. The food selection is interesting but slim. I ordered fish which was not hot when it came, and my table mates all agreed the great food descriptions did not materialize as great food. Food design is not the same as delivery of excellent plates. We spent a lot of time going over wine options. Our waitress was patient but the sommelier was absent that night. The idea of wine machines monetizing every sip, was not appealing to me. We got fair wine by the glass. The place fell flat."

  • "igh revies and expected outstanding regional experience. Spent too much effort on ambience and not enough on food. Wait long even after telling we had to be out in an hour for lunch."
