A word from SoBou
One of the most important restaurants of 2013 by Zagat Magazine!
The Commander's Family of Restaurants returns to the French Quarter, where the family business began in the 1950's, with our Spirited Restaurant - SoBou. We're South of Bourbon (ok - it's really southeast), in the land of civilized drinking and worlds away from the oversized beers and bad frozen drinks. Our modern Creole saloon is a Louisiana-centric and street food inspired restaurant with a beverage focus.

First of all, the food is different. Not your usual combination of ingredients on the plate. That being said, it was quite tasty. Ordinarily, I would never think to combine rum soaked pineapple with shredded BBQ pork, but it works. The chicken and andouille gumbo was delicious: very dark roux, thick with a surprise of a potato ball instead of the traditional rice. So if you have an adventurous palate, you will enjoy SoBou.

From the time we were greeted to when we left SoBou provided a gracious, first class, dining experience. Delicious, inventive cocktails, a well chosen wine list with excellent by the glass options, top notch savory courses and decadent dent sweets. But what really makes this a destination to seek out in a city chock full of terrific restaurants is the cordial and professional service team.

So Bou was an amazing restaurant from start to finish. Every item one the menu was superb and exceeded our expectations. Environment was chic and fun. The food was inventive, refreshing, and exciting to our taste buds. Service was five star (Bryon did an outstanding job). This restaurant is a must in New Orleans.

Our server Mariah made the meal excellent. She made perfect recommendations and was incredibly friendly. At first, we weren't thrilled with our table as it had a beer tap in the middle. The beer we wanted was out, and the tap below kept half the table from being able to scoot in underneath it. We couldn't see each other through it, and the table next to us was screaming at a football game on TV. After a cocktail, the food began to arrive. While the food seemed fancy and complicated on the menu, everything was perfectly balanced and delicious. The standout for main courses was the whole fried fish. While it freaked me out, I'm told it was incredible! It was a great meal with excellent service. The noise and tables could be improved.

Although a native of New Orleans, I hadn't had a chance to dine at Sobou until my dear friend from New Mexico came for a visit. My son recommended Sobou as a good place to try, and I'm glad he did. My friend and I arrived 15 mins. early and were greeted and seated by the Sous Chef. The wait staff was accommodating without being annoying attentive. The chairs were a little uncomfortable for my ancient bones and could use a seat cushion. The cocktails were very good-a great blend of creativity, taste, and kick for .25 cents. The roasted pumpkin soup was a perfect started on a crisp Fall day. The Grilled fish was cooked to perfection. I won't wait for an out of town friend to visit before I visit Sobou again!

We had dinner Sunday night. Food was awesome. Very interesting combinations of food. As nice as the waiter was, everything took too long. After ordering desert, we wanted 27 minutes. Finally had to cancel the order and leave. Manager came over to tell us the charge had been removed from the bill. Removed the charge for food we never got? Big deal. In any case, I know they tried, and were friendly about it. Go for food!

We were lucky to snag a 6:15pm reservation at 6pm, same day. The restaurant was very slow when we got there, but all of the tables were booked for reservations. Make a reservation if possible!! The food was unique and delicious. The whole fish to share was presented in an unforgettable manner - came fried, upright in a large pot, in an "s" shape, to look like it's swimming in a sea of arugula salad with pickled vegetables. For apps, the sweet and savoury beignets were great, as were the shrimp skewers. For the food quality and experience, this place was pretty reasonably priced. Service was great. Decor was very cool.

Schmiclt the Sous Chef was marvelous at recommending foods for one of our guests with allergies and the rest of us. I give him 11 out of 10!! Out waitress, all 3 feel 23 inches, Jazzie(I could have the name wrong) was outstanding and guided us through a very memorable dining / drinking experience. AND the legendary Abigil a 125 out of 10 I can still close my eyes and smell and taste the drinks she conjured up for us. I give SoBou the the highest rating possible, they excelled at everything.

Food was very good, portion sizes are small. I ordered the fish it was very tastey, but disappointed that I couldn't get a small side salad? (not on the menu) How problematic would that have been. Resturant wasn't busy. Oh well!!! Would have had to order one of the larger salads. Would I go back and recommend? Yes!

This place definitely does a great job on the flavors of the food - The wine expert came and gave us advice on wines - he was very knowledgeable and helpful. Our waiter was extremely professional and patient and was able to answer every single question we had. The food flavors were exquisite but definitely don't come here when you want ALOT of food - plates are small for price - even for a restaurant of this caliber. all in all - great spot for a special occasion.

This was my first time having a full dinner at SoBou. I'd been to the bar before and enjoyed the cocktails, wine, and bar snacks. Dinner was very good and quite reasonably priced, I thought (some entrees less than $20 and some starters less than $10). Service was great, very friendly. There was a delay in serving our cocktails, but the waitress acknowledged it, apologized, and comped an appetizer to make up for it. The situation was handled perfectly (even though it wasn't a big problem) - very clear that they wanted to make the customer happy.

The Atmosphere are really cool with beer taps at your table, however when I went none of them were working. The food I was not impressed with. Very small selection....only three entrees to choose from and several small side dishes. I enjoyed the decor and overall place just disappointed with food selection and tap that was broken.

If Commanders Palace is known for great creative Creole cooking, then Sobou is their teenager wanting to push the boundaries farther afield. More of a tapas bar, the appetizers are all interesting (try the tuna cones!) and none of their entrees are very expensive. But they all push boundaries and Nola-southwest-Asian fusions abound. A beautiful contemporary interior and interesting bar options like beer tasting tables make it a very happening place. Also has a decent but eclectic wine list. A great addition to the Nola restaurant scene!

French Quarter modern setting for breakfast. Food arrival was slow but once served it was quite good. My wife had the egg white frittata which she found to be exquisitely delicious. My shredded pork was partially tough, did not appear freshly prepared, and the dish was quite filling. The main problem was about a 30+ minute wait for food arrival when we had a tight schedule (and 1 of 2 tables in the place).

I think this restaurant is overated. The food is good but very small plates. It's ashamed that we had the worst server in the restaurant. We took the Live to Eat menu and we were supposed the have a cocktail. I had to ask to receive it. We had no water, no bread and he never asked us if we wanted coffee. And when we received our check, he had the audacity to specify (twice) that we should give him 20% tip. Sorry but he received only 10% and I was very generous. Overall the food is good but the service poor. I am sorry for the comment and I never write a comment like that before but this time I had to make an exception.
