Diner Reviews
  • "The food is fantastic. They have so many creative dishes. I like everything I ordered including the blue bay mussels, lobster maki, duck entree and chocolate maki as desert. Definitely a 5 star and I have recommended to a lot of my friends."

  • "In addition to the wonderful flavors and food combinations from the Soba kitchen we were very impressed with the excellent service we received from our waiter. Glad I chose it to celebrate my birthday."

  • "We live within walking distance to 4 Big Burrito restaurants and enjoy aspects of all of them. Soba is one of the most reliable. We generally have tasty interesting meals there. Decent wine list, nice bar scene, good asian-fusion food. Service can be uneven, well intentioned, but they don't always come thru as you would like them to. Prices are moderately high, but not out of line for what you get. Wild Alaskan halibut & thakkali curry (vegetarian) were both enjoyable although the rice on the curry plate could be a little more interesting (maybe fresher & less dry). Chocolate pretzel stack was rich, perhaps more malt & miso flavor & a little less sugar for balance. Wine markups are 3x-4x, pricey but typical for these retaurants."

  • "Great ambience and awesome service. This is a great date/special occasion spot. Recommend dishes: Tuna and halibut."
    Dined on 7/11/2014
  • "I usually get the black cod which is always terrific. This time I went with the halibut and was not disappointed in the least. My wife had the pad thai which is a solid standby and loved it."

  • "Consistently excellent food; service good, but not great. Sat on the deck on a delightful evening."
    Dined on 7/10/2014
  • "The evening was very gracious and so was the dinner. The calamari was an excellent choice for an appetizer. I had the halibut cooked to perfection while the Mrs. had salmon, also perfect."
    Dined on 7/10/2014
  • "Wonderful mix of pan - Asian. Always fresh interpretations of a variety of Asian dishes. From meat eaters to Vegans, everyone has a spot on the menu. Freshness is highlighted in all dishes."

  • "I took my fiance to Soba for his birthday. The drinks and food were excellent. I had the bangkok tea and the miso black cod. My fiance had the biddle buck and the seared rare tuna. Our server was attentive, but was not very knowledgable about the menu. Overall, I would reccommend this restuarant for special occasions."

  • "The soft jazz music was overbearing (I couldn't hear my date). I ordered the tuna steak. The sesame seeds were burnt, and it was doused in a bad interpretation or a Korean BBQ sauce. The dining room wasn't terribly clean, and, even though it had been "redone", looked cheap. We sat on top of the table beside us, as we were squished in. What was sad is that the dining room was not even filled, and we had a reservation. Was that necessary? Overall, a pretty poor dinner. I would not recommend wasting the money on overpriced food with a poor atmosphere. Our server was awesome, but it didn't save the experience."

  • "I was very excited to try Soba for the first time, and maybe that was my first mistake. While the food and the drinks were good, they were not outstanding. Each dish that was presented felt like it was "missing sometime", some crunch in the springrolls, some sauce for the maki... Maybe I am being too critical, but I was not impressed. It is not likely that I will return."

  • "The vietnamese tasting menu was an unexpected change, and we really enjoyed it. The service was top-notch, and each course and wine pairing was explained well."
    Dined on 6/27/2014
  • "From the trio of starters to the delicious dessert, this was an excellent dining experience."

  • "visited for the vietnamese menu tasting and was very impressed with it. everything was great, the server's knowledge of the dishes was impressive and i left looking forward to another visit."

  • "Went for wife's birthday. Were seated immediately in the mid level room. Shared strawberry soup with ginger oil and greens. Served chilled. Ginger oil gave soup a slight kick and greens a pungency that went well with the soup. I had the Thai seafood hot pot and my wife had the duck two ways. There were plenty of mussels 4 or 5 shrimp, two sauteed scallops and two fish cakes served in a spicy soupy sauce. Fish cakes were excellent. Everything else cooked to right degree of doneness. Wife's duck breast was cooked medium rare as ordered and the braise legs very tender both complemented by the sauce. The chocolate maki with warm chocolate sauce was rich and creamy. Service was prompt but not rushed. Anna helped make the night special."

  • "Took my husband for his birthday, great food and atmosphere. Main floor seemed like a great place for a larger party. Will definitely be going back!"
    Dined on 6/21/2014
  • "Our food and wine were great. Wish the service had been as good. We think we had an inexperienced server. Food was yummy, and wine list impressive. Only issue is that it seems like the prices keep cheating up, so we come out less often than in times past."

  • "I ordered Pad Thai. It was too gloppy for my taste. I would have preferred it to be lighter and with more fresh vegetables. My husband had Bi Bim Bop, and he didn't think it was that great either. We've had better, I would say. Decor was nice and music is trendy, for those that appreciate that."

  • "I always go to Soba for my birthday, and I am never disappointed. The food is flavorful, the wait staff is unfailingly polite and helpful, and the atmosphere is festive and fancy."

  • "The newly renovated space is lovely--warm woods and great fabrics, a more open feel. Happy bartenders made a wonderful summer drink with rhubarb. The food was always great and continues to be, seafood with an Asian inflection. My soft-shell crab was wonderful as was the salmon. My companion had the pot stickers and udon and loved them."

  • "After my meal at Soba I felt somewhat underwhelmed, I took my fiancee there for her birthday after reading several fantastic reviews. The first thing I noticed was how quiet it was for a Saturday night, most restaurants I have been to in Pittsburgh are buzzing on a Saturday night. The appetizers were excellent, with the crab spring rolls a highlight, The mains were nice but nothing special. Overall it was an enjoyable meal, I just felt that Soba did not live up to its excellent reputation."

  • "Great apps. The lobster maki is always terrific; the shrimp tempura succulent; and the lump crab spring rolls crispy and delicious. Entrees were great also. The filet cooked to perfection; the tuna rare and tasty; and the Thai seafood hot pot filled with tasty shellfish and just hot enough. And the chocolate maki and the sorbet trio were just what the doctor ordered for dessert. Always a great meal here."

  • "Soba, like all the Big Burrito restaurants, maintains a consistent high quality. The food offerings are innovative and consistently excellent, the service excellent; unobtrusive to those who know what they want, yet helpful to first-timers or diners not sure about the offerings. One of our first choices for a great place to take visitors or for special occasions."

  • "food very different but very tasty able to cut down on the spices which was good a bit expensive since it is mostly ala cart"

  • "Wednesday to celebrate his recent promotion. We had been here before and enjoyed everything; however, this time was worst. The Service and ambience was good. The food was horrible. Our soft shell crab, which was an appetizer, was burnt. The calamari had a strand of hair added to the dish as well. The night was ruined thanks to the kitchen staff."

  • "This restaurant is the right place to have dinner at. The food is always interesting and good. The ambience is quiet and changes every time."

  • "Wonderful food and atmosphere. We did ask to switch tables to sit outside, mostly because I'm one who is always cold and I preferred to sit outside on the deck and enjoy the 75 degree weather."

  • "Food and service here is always very good. The bartenders were very quick to serve us upon arrival and we were seated at our reservation time."

  • "Soba has the very best tuna steak, ever. Have recommended it literally 20 times and never disappointed "
    Dined on 5/29/2014
  • "All of the menu items are unique and delicious. They were very helpful with my veganism, pointing out which dishes could be served as such for me. They even offered to prepare their chicken and shrimp pad thai in their "old-school veggie" version, which contains no fish sauce (rare to be able to omit)! The pad thai was outstanding, and while it tasted more like pad kee mow than the pad thai I am used to, there were plenty of delicious veggies, including lots of eggplant cooked to perfection."

  • "Last minute, we needed someplace to eat. We turned to the OpenTable app and searched for places nearby that get 5-stars. SOBA came up and we saw all the great reviews. Bada-bing-bada-bang, we were sitting in one of Pittsburgh's best places. And it is for a reason! Great food, an unusual (but not intimidating) menu, and a funky vibe. PLUS, the men's room was clean and they have FREE valet parking ... two things that mean so much to me. I would 100% go back, I would recommend it to a friend. And if you're reading through reviews, I highly encourage you to give SOBA a try."

  • "We have been going to Soba for almost twenty years and it still hasn't disappointed us:-) As per usual, the food, wine, and service were all spectacular and we have no complaints:-) The knowledge of the servers with their recommendations has never let us down. I look forward to dining another twenty years (or more!) at our favorite restaurant!"

  • "Soba is probably our favorite restaurant in the Pittsburgh area. The food and service is always spot on! The hardest part is choosing what to eat. Every dish is creative and perfectly prepared."

  • "Had the soup, the asparagus salad, the cod, and the pork chop, and everything was extremely flavorful and artistically presented. Interesting cocktails are half price at the bar for happy hour."

  • "We went for dinner to SOBA to celebrate our daughter's graduation and were very happy with all aspects of the dinner - from the amazing cuisine to the outstanding service. Try the Kim-Chi pancakes - they were incredible. I would highly recommend this for special occasions. It is a little pricey but worth it."

  • "Great food, calm ambience, comfortable table. Reservation was honored promptly without hesitation. Service was polite but personnel seemed to be somewhat distracted."
    Dined on 5/18/2014
  • "The small plate selections were superb. Allowed a variety and diversity of flavors. Miso flavored broth of the mussels was particularly notable."

  • "Went there for the first time in close to a year. Still some of the most well executed, thoughtful, and delightful food being served in the Pgh-area. And that's saying a lot, since some very good restaurants have opened in the meantime. This is one of our special places, and we'll be going back more often."

  • "I have been going to Soba for many years now and to this day have not had a bad/poor experience. The food is always superb and the hostesses/waiters/waitresses are kind and very knowledgeable! Great restaurant!"
