A word from Smorgas Chef West Village
Smörgås Chef Restaurant serves up super fresh seafood and prime meats based on centuries of Scandinavian & European culinary traditions. Zagat Survey says Smörgås Chef is "a refreshing change of pace", and Village Voice claims the food is "Damn Good."

Smörgås Chef's authentic Swedish Meatballs with Lingonberries have become famous. The New York Post calls Smörgås Chef the "Swedish Meatball Mecca" of New York. Smörgås Chef has also become known for its roasted rack of lamb with a goat cheese Sherry sauce, and its oven-baked Cod from the Kenai Peninsula.

For lunch, you will find a smorgasbord of open-face Scandinavian sandwiches like Coldwater Shrimp, Smoked Salmon with Egg & Chives, and Chicken Caramel with Norwegian goat cheese and asparagus. For weekend brunch, enjoy Scandinavian Baked Eggs with a chanterelle hollandaise, Eggs Benedict, Burgers, and Vanilla Waffles. The New York Times calls Smörgås Chef "a little treasure."

Diner Reviews
  • "We used to live in Sweden and thought it would be nice to try a Swedish restaurant in New York. It's a nice place and the food is good and very reminiscent of Sweden. The best part, however, was our server, Silvana. She was just great -- very helpful and just the right amount of friendly advice. The restaurant is good, the food is good, and Silvana made the whole experience much better than the sum of its parts."

  • "We ordered a bottle of wine to share and the swedish meatball appetizer. I thought that they were ok. Thankfully they are served with a sauces to help give them more flavor. Also, it's a small appetizer with rather hefty prices. For entrees, we ordered the Icelandic Cod and the Heritage Pork Chop and we shared both. The cod was flavorless and came wrapped in bacon which was a surprise. Sadly, the bacon was low quality bacon that you see in diners and was poorly cooked. The puree underneath was also quite bland. The pork chop was SO dry and therefore very hard to cut and eat. For $26, it should be properly cooked. It was such a letdown. Service and ambiance were fine, but I would not come back because of the food."

  • "We went there for the New Year's Eve pre-fixe dinner (3 course, $65/person), and we loved it. We had expected a full house, but there were a few empty tables at 7pm, so it worked out better for us. Some restaurants get too packed and noisy on the NYE, which we didn't enjoy too much. We had the pumpkin soup, meatballs (yeah!) steak, scallops, and cheesecake and waffles for dessert. Everything was very tasty and portions were reasonable as well."

  • "I have dined at this restaurant many times, and it is a great place to have casual breakfast, brunch, and lunch. The place feels so charming, so it just adds very nice feeling to start a day. Dinner is also nice - there is a romantic atmosphere that is not too pretentious. The food is good, and their dessert is great. They have a large table for a big group, but I would say it's perfect for 2~6 people to dine together."

  • "Scandinavian or Scandinavian influenced cuisine seemed like it would be an interesting change from the more numerous foodie choices and it was. Swedish meatballs for the traditionalist, very well done, gravlax croquettes - fantastic, interesting seafood entrees. Everything well portioned, not too big, not too small. Tables are tightly packed in very small space, as with most West Village restaurants, so be prepared to hear neighbor's convo, and they yours. This is also the reason service gets only moderate review, it's really hard for the server to be delicate with no room to spare. Interesting house cocktails, well worth the price."

  • "Date night. Cocktails were tasty but expensive.Lots of free tables in the restaurant. Food was well-prepared but didn't blow our minds. Would go back again if in the area but would not make a special trip out."

  • "Dinner for two on a Friday night at Smorgas Chef. We had no problem making a reservation and were seated by the windows which provided a charming street view. Instead of getting entrees, we made a meal of the smorgasbord, meatball and gravlax appetizers along with a side of Swiss chard. Everything was fresh and very flavorful and that, along with the bread, was plenty of food for dinner. The service was accommodating and quick. We also had two nice glasses of wine and a couple of cocktails to start which were really tasty."

  • "This was our second time at Smorgas. We had a fantastic meal. It was a cold October night. First of all Smorgas is located in a very charming part of the village. It has a great comfortable, warm ambiance. Our server was polite and friendly. I like their drink selections. Good wines & cocktails. The food is very good. The gravlax was excellent. The Swedish meatballs were perfect as usual. We will be back for sure."

  • "This place has some good food and it's cozy. Although I had a reservation, it seemed like the hostesses did not reserve a table for us so when we arrived they were talking to each other saying that this table is almost done and that table is gona be done soon. In the end, we waited around 10 mins (which is not too bad) but we ended up being seated outside, which was slightly inconvenient cuz it was windy. It wasn't a bad experience all in all, the food was good and everyone enjoyed their meal."
