Smörgås Chef Restaurant serves up super fresh seafood and prime meats based on centuries of Scandinavian & European culinary traditions. Zagat Survey says Smörgås Chef is "a refreshing change of pace", and Village Voice claims the food is "Damn Good."

Smörgås Chef's authentic Swedish Meatballs with Lingonberries have become famous. The New York Post calls Smörgås Chef the "Swedish Meatball Mecca" of New York. Smörgås Chef has also become known for its roasted rack of lamb with a goat cheese Sherry sauce, and its oven-baked Cod from the Kenai Peninsula.

For lunch, you will find a smorgasbord of open-face Scandinavian sandwiches like Coldwater Shrimp, Smoked Salmon with Egg & Chives, and Chicken Caramel with Norwegian goat cheese and asparagus. For weekend brunch, enjoy Scandinavian Baked Eggs with a chanterelle hollandaise, Eggs Benedict, Burgers, and Vanilla Waffles. The New York Times calls Smörgås Chef "a little treasure."

  • "Stone Street is a close-off street, with picnic tables in the middle. The surrounding buildings are among the oldest in Manhattan. If you've eaten outdoors in Europe, this will remind you of it. Smorgas Chef is one of several restaurants on this street. We ate here on a hot Sunday night and the food was perfect for that, light and refreshing."

  • "Had a friend visiting from out of town and met her for luch as she was sightseeing in the neighborhood. This is the same menu at hiked prices as the former west village location. Was humid and sporadically rainy that afternoon so we opted for indoor dining. Given the quality of the food and the lack of ambiance felt like the prices were not aligned with the kitchen's abilities. Could be wrong but I felt that the W Village location had a cooler chilled vibe and lower prices with much better ambiance and equivalent or better service. As a result I am not sure that I would rush back although the food is enjoyable comfort food if overpriced."

  • "With friends visiting and a lack of non-touristy, laid-back eating options for brunch, we found Smorgas Chef to be quite a nice surprise. Their ingredients are farm fresh, and they have a little bit of everything to please all palettes. I had the smorgasbord, while others the eggs benedict, kale salad, eggs florentine. All good portions, reasonably priced, and quite yummy. Plus there is a tree in the middle of the restaurant- how can you beat that in the dead of winter?"

Our friends, new to NYC and Scandinavian food, tried the meatballs and the Smorgasbord, which offered a sampling of various dishes; they were very pleased. We'll be back!"

  • "This little hideaway is awesome. I'm not Scandinavian but I'm starting to wish I were! My wife and I (she's Moroccan) consider their brunch one of our favorites in the City. We just had our first dinner there last weekend, and loved it. I'm talking about high-quality food, great and unique tastes and A-Z perfect for us in all other respects. If you haven't visited, it's a must for anyone who values their stomach and taste buds."

I think it's the only place on the whole street not owned by Peter Poulakakos. Swedish food is delicate and delicious: dill, sour cream, blinis, fish. Lovely."

We ordered from the SMÖRGÅS CLASSICS section (SWEDISH MEATBALL & LINGONBERRIES and HOUSE CURED AQUAVIT GRAVLAKS) which is supposed to be their best according to the reviews. The food was absolutely tasteless. The cocktails were weak and outrageously expensive. The whole experience was really disappointing and not worth the money spent."

My wife was disappointed that the restaurant did not have the pork chop so she went with her second choice of steak; which was ok. The waitress was terrific. Off the beaten path and very quiet for a Saturday night; but it was the financial district so it was unexpected. We're looking forward to experiencing the West Village location next."

Server was lovely but service was mind-bogglingly slow for a 6:30 reservation with very few diners in the place. We were in the mood for beer, but they were out of our first three choices from the specialty beers list. Ended up with Stellas, then it took, no kidding, 15 minutes to get 'em! After an age, our starters arrived. I had potato leek soup, my friend herring sampler; both quite good. After another eternity, my friend's salmon entree and my gnocchi entree were served. Again, yummy, but not earth shattering, and glad we were not in a hurry. Ambience is pleasant; decor nice enough if a bit haphazard."

We finally got out of Stone street maze before we rip off our map.. so remember to give yourself 10 minutes buffer so you could get to your reservation on time. Smorgas is famous for their brunch but if you plan to go there during weekdays, you're out of luck. That's what we did so we were a bit disappointed. Looking at the lunch menu hoping to find "egg benedicts" but we ended up getting what the Waiter recommended - "SWEDISH MEATBALLS & LINGONBERRIES" & "BLUE SHELL MUSSELS & FRIES". "MEATBALLS" - $17. Most expensive meatballs I've ever had. There were 8 meatballs, $2 each. - They do taste great. "MUSSELS & FRIES" - $15 - A big bowl full of them and comes with fries. BEST VALUE"

  • "My boyfriend and I went to dinner here the other day. This was my first time, but my boyfriend had previously been there for brunch and raved about it. We did the fall tasting menu and I had the potato fennel soup which was good; however, the Swedish meatballs that I had as an entree were absolutely amazing!! It was good timing too as they had just prepared a fresh batch. For dessert The service we had the waffle and the almond cake. While both were delicious, the almond cake blew us away. Overall, the service was good the waitress was friendly and I will definitely be coming back again."
