Friday night, 8 PM -- did not want to go for Italian. Went for Scandinavian (which we like) and regretted it. The herring tasted like it was bought in Key Food. The Pork was little better. The wine was less than mediocre. The ambiance was that of a hospital cafeteria. I will not come back for more and would not recommend it to others.

We eat here periodically, when we find ourselves missing the food from the 'old country (Sweden and Denmark). The food is authentic, the gravlax as good as what I make at home, the herring off the planet, and the cold water shrimp a delight. Add to this any of the traditional hot dishes you might fancy, plenty of lingonberries, and a terrific princess torte or almond cake for desert. Now my mouth is watering again - I've got to go back.

It's always refreshing to move away from more standard lunch fare and go to Scandinavia where the flavors are so different! Had a very good lunch here, shared gravlax to start and the quartet of sandwiches for main course; the beets and the cucumber salads are REALLY wonderful;the space is lovely, as you sit under a leafless (big) tree; clever gift items in front and back, and sometimes a very interesting exhibit upstairs! How fun is that for lunch?

It was a welcome surprise to find a Nordic oasis in the middle of Manhattan. For me the Prix Fixe was the way to go. I was a little surprised by the roasted chicken entré and equally surprised that reindeer was not a selection. Maybe it's a seasonal thing. Carmen took very good care of us. Well worth mentioning also is that the noise level was very subdued so we could have conversation at a conversational volume, not at ball park volume. Thanks for a great night.

Had dinner with a long term colleague who I had not seen in a while. I am familiar with Scandinavian food and she is not. We spent a long time catching up over a glass of wine and then I took her through the menu item by item. The server never rushed us to order. Food was great as usual. i signed up for the meal and movie special - hadn't been there in a number of months but the menu had gotten even more restricted - my friend didn't see anything on the movie menu she wanted and ended up spending $58 or so for a beet salad and two glasses of wine which was preposterous for what it was the service used to be delightful and accommodating - however, there is a new manager who is as unpleasant as they come - he refused to allow any exceptions to the menu and finally, under duress, allowed a substitution of a glass of the cheapest wine for the dessert at a cost of $3 - when i told him that there used to be more flexibility , he said that had never been the case so i was a liar to boot! so good bye Smorgas, hello Oyster Bar

I have traveled to several of the Scandinavian countries. The restaurants there focus on good food without fancy frills. In the same spirit, this restaurant delivers a lively and varied menu. The food is tasty and seems quite authentic. I particularly enjoyed the cold cucumber soup and the Swedish meatballs. This is a great spot for a casual meal and a menu that is not the usual New York fare.

I've been here several times before, and the food is always good, but the service is always terrible. We're talking "drop the dessert menu off and come back 15 minutes later" terrible, despite the fact that the entire dining room is tiny and it takes a concerted effort to ignore other people. I'm not sure why it's so difficult for them to figure it out, as there is nothing complicated.

The location within the Scandinavian Center adds to an ambiance conducive to a quiet restful lunch or dinner. It is often possible to see a film or art exhibit before or after the meal. One of the reasons I went to NY recently was to eat Swedish food at this restaurant. The food arrived quickly and was delicious. The staff was extremely attentive and considerate. I was there near closing time and it wasn't busy, so I got to interact with four staff members - all of which were very nice. And the atmosphere is fun and creative. My only criticism was that the menu should be as complete as the restaurant they have downtown. I came for the steak and was surprised it wasn't on the menu at this Park Avenue location. But the Swedish meatball dish was great!

Definitely a refreshing brunch. We all really enjoyed the generous use of gravlax in the dishes, the egg dishes were great, the salad tasted fresh and the dressing great, and the side of gratin is amazing. I could eat a whole pan of it! The restaurant itself was charming, quiet and calm (what many brunch places that are too hip lack), and it made us feel like we could actually be in Helsinki or Stockholm at that moment. Thank you!

I have become a regular here for the fresh, healthy and beautifully prepared food and kind service (most of the time). The ambiance is a bit institutional since it is part of Scandinavia House lobby. Over the summer, it has been consistently warm and uncomfortable. Wish they would address it sometime soon.
