Diner Reviews
  • "The food is so bad that we left all of it. The tables like in Tim Horton's and very cheep dishes . WE do not remember when we had worst dinner."

  • "We ordered the scallops and the salmon and both dishes were excellent! The Tiramasu was also delicious. Worth a visit!"
    Dined on 11/14/2014
  • "Enjoyed the meal but found our table by the window cold so had to wear my coat through dinner. Be sure to check your bill as the prices on the menu do not seem to match those in their system."

  • "We love this place, but fear that there have been too many changes in menu, staff, and ambiance. Will hesitate to go again."
    Dined on 11/7/2014
  • "Name sounds like it is a bit British, the menu is a blend leaning towards French and the Chef is Italian! And it all works. Truly enjoyed the salad, wine and scallop dish."
    Dined on 11/6/2014
  • "Please note that the online menu lists many more dishes that were not available on the actual menu which was disappointing."

  • "We found this little spot on a dark and stormy night and popped in for a pre-Theatre meal. The food was wonderful, and service staff very accommodating, our only complaint was the draftiness as we were seating near the door."

  • "This restaurant did not come close to meeting our expectations based on their website. We left after the first course."
    Dined on 10/18/2014
  • "The new chef is very good. We loved the onion soup and the scallops. The complimentary bread is AMAZING! The service was friendly and helpful."

  • "I had read reviews that said the service wasn't great but we didn't have any problems, the servers were very nice and helpful and food arrived in good time. Having said this, the restaurant was not busy, a bit sad on a Friday night, but to our advantage as we could linger and chat! The food was fresh and tasty, though not super inventive. My friend loved her Halibut, and I liked my Crab and Shrimp cakes and my Arugula, Beet and Goat cheese salad. They have a good variety of bottles on the wine list, though not extensive. I would recommend the Smoking Dog as I think its good value for money, and I will definitely return."

  • "Server knew nothing about the menu, and was klutzy. Seafood linguine bore no hint of Pernod, and was simply boring. Server had to be asked to bring a bowl for seafood shells. Nice patio for a summer evening."

  • "The layout the restaurant is ok - with a nice patio out front. We dined out front as there was a private party inside. Service was off and on, with the party inside - but quick. The french onion soup was nuked in the microwave - so not cheesy and bubbly, it was sweet too = strike three! We sent one soup back - big slab of unmelted cheese on top. Salads good, drinks were fast. Bread was excellent. Entree's - lamb shank on eggplant goo - look awful… was ok tasting. Filet was not hot, but cooked properly, strip loin was pure gristle - we sent it back and they re-produced another steak quickly - it was good and hot, but nothing was exciting - mediocre at best - we will not go again."

  • "Hadn't been to this cute bistro in a few years, but walked in before we headed off to Bard on the Beach. Our friendly server made sure our meals came in a timely manner. The usual bistro fare a bit on the light side, but perfect for a summer's evening. Good beer, good service, good food."

  • "Really enjoyed our dinner. Portions were remarkable as I had read reviews to suggest otherwise. The halibut and salmon were extremely flavourful and perfectly cooked! I will definitely be back."

  • "Decent menu. Decent price point. That is, could have been quite decent if my food had not been left under the heat lamp because the server neglected to place the order correctly. That being said she was apologetic and treated me to a glass of wine. Noted and appreciated. Thank you (although, I would have preferred it if my order had been remade and not served to me in that state). My companions meals were both okay."

  • "We are regulars here dining before visits to Bard on the Beach, Museum of Vancouver and the dozens of other activities and events in that area. Food is consistently outstanding, even on a busy night which was the case recently. Our server was very professional and pleasant making good recommendations. Have the Duck a l'Orange! Worth the visit alone. Will be back again next month"

  • "We had an early dinner here before Bard at the Beach, our first visit to the restaurant. The staff was friendly and attentive. Without hesitation, the waiter offered to brew iced tea for my wife even though it wasn't on the menu. The food was inventive and tasty. We all agreed that the roast chicken my daughter ordered, which she kindly let her parents sample, was the best."

  • "At our table we had mussels, halibut, salmon and gnocchi and everything was really tasty. We enjoyed sitting outside and also took advantage of the half-price appetizer hour (moules-frites), which we shared. (BTW there is a rule that each person can only order one appie at 50%). Our server got sidetracked about halfway through our stay and was not around a couple times when we needed her, but other employees worked hard to help out. Would love to return next time I'm in the area!"

  • "The food at Smoking Dog has improved dramatically recently. The mushroom pasta is terrific. The patio is fantastic in the summer."

  • "The food isn't amazing, but it is very good! Reasonably priced, great service, great location. Definitely worth a visit. The tuna I had was outstanding, though the risotto was a bit bland. Interesting menu but no rabbit stew. Wine menu is a bit thin."

  • "This restaurant, once a real treat, has declined in our view. Service was polite but unenthusiastic, distracted, unengaged, and sometimes even a bit resentful. It was also very slow. The house-baked French bread was very good and requests for more were granted; it just took far too long to get it. In fact it took a long time to get anything you asked for. The charcuterie plate was not impressive. The entrees were OK but not memorable. Tables are very tight. It's in a great location and I appreciate that they must be paying high costs, but the price just doesn't match the level of service and the quality of the food. We left with the point of view that we would move on and try someplace else next time."

  • "It has taken me some time to write this review as, over the past many years, my experience at The Smoking Dog has been exceptional - except for this experience. From the moment I walked into the restaurant I was not given the impression that I was welcome. Eventually our waitress asked us for our order (much after later patrons were served). When the order arrived my friend's meal was so bad that it had to be returned (comp'ing the meal does not, in my opinion, make up for the fact that the original dish was terrible). My ordered was 'okay' but I can do better at home. Will I go back? Maybe...........but not for a while."

  • "We had a very nice dinner on the patio before heading to Bard on the Beach. Very tasty crab and shrimp cakes, and caesar salad. We would definitely go there again."

  • "I made reservation with mention of table outside and stated we had Bard on the Beach ticket. They advertise a discount for Bard patrons. I reminded them on arrival about the theatre timeline. They had no clue, had not even looked at the reservation. No table reserved outside. So we sat inside to order. We had to watch and remind the waiter we were offered to be moved once outside was available. Forget the theater discount! Me friend ask if they had a cheese plate instead of dessert. He had no clue but asked. It took a long time to get a very underwhelming plate of cheese and tired grapes, which we had to have packed to go and remind him again about the theatre timeline. My mussels and fries were great."

  • "Every time we attend Bard on the Beach we come here for drinks and dinner before the show. It is a short 15 minute walk to the Theatre Tent from 'The Dog'. And they extend a meal discount to Bard ticket holders. But the main reason we come is the delicious food, relaxed fun atmosphere and very attentive service. Try the duck or the lamb. Both delicious. The Dog is our go-to place in that part of town"

  • ".... the menu was limited and not very exciting, but that's just me because I like big menus and seeing unusual items on there. Having said that, the meal was delicious, beautifully prepared and presented with high quality ingredients. Service was attentive to a fault. Cozy room, nicely but not overly fussily decorated and a perfect little neighborhood gem."

  • "We arrived on a Friday night @ 7PM for a Birthday dinner for 4 We were surprised to find we were one of two tables. When the other table left we were the only table in the restaurant for the night. Their champagne/sparkling wine list was small, even with that most items were not available? They did offer a compromise of a more expensive Champagne at a slightly lower price. Food was good, exactly what we ordered and presentation was good. at the end a little expensive. Our "waiter" was friendly but extremely inexperienced taking away for the evening. They did provide us with a Delicious Birthday dessert, in compensation. I would consider returning for lunch. The area is beautiful to walk to the beach."

  • "First time visit. The food was OK, though the risotto dish, while tasty, seemed suspiciously more like rice. Our young waiter could not serve wine - first some spills, then and a no-no: top up an unfinished glass from the second bottlle... But the atmosphere was pleasant and the setting good for conversation."

  • "Bought the groupon $65 with 4 course dinner for two - Wonderful deal!! We went on a thursday night, and surprisingly there were only two groups of customers in the whole restaurant, thus the place was pretty quiet. Perfect way to enjoy our romantic dinner. There were 2 selections each for the starter, salad, and dessert. Garlic prawn from the starter was awesome. A lot of entree selections, we had the risotto and beef striploin. Risotto looks not much at first, but it's actually very filling, and tasted great. The steak was AWESOME!! My boyfriend is usually very picky about food, but this time he loved the steak and the roasted veggies. Loved the peppermint creme brulee, too. I am really satisfied with this deal. Server was very sweet too!"

  • "We were looking for a place half-way between us and our friends, and settled on the Kitsilano area. Had heard about but not tried the Smoking Dog, so thought it would be a good bet. Service was very good - friendly without being smothering. Each of our dishes was also very good - my wife thought the sablefish was the best she had every had, and she loves sablefish! Overall we had a very relaxed and enjoyable meal, and will definitely return."

  • "The menu & presentation was really dated...can I say 1980 something? I was expecting to be wowed with French food - instead I had the impression of a cheap meal usually reserved as part of a tour group. No effort went into the preparation of this menu - it's definitely not worth the money I spent. I was disappointed since I had been to the Smoking Dog years before and it was fantastic then. Seems they are going through a change in management so, for their sake, I hope there is improvement soon. The only area I was happy with was the service. The rest of the meal was dull, tasteless and a far cry from what I expected. All in all an unfortunate & regrettable experience."

  • "Two of us went on a special coupon that gave us 4 courses for a certain price. One had the soup and one the prawns - both excellent. Very tasty salad, with some surprising combinations which were delicious. I had the salmon - perfectly cooked; husband had beef ragout with linguini which he said was good. Two different desserts - both very tasty. Attentive service but not obtrusive."

  • "We had high hopes for the new chef and menu at the Smoking Dog, but were disappointed with the execution. This has always been a location that should succeed, but seems to fall short of its promise. The food was mediocre, the service slow and sometimes sullen, the room far too loud for the number of diners. It urgently needs a facelift, a bartender, some acoustic management, some enthusiasm in the kitchen and an experienced front of house staff. We had prawn cocktail (rolled in cocktail sauce), a meager and flavorless beet salad, little crab cakes that were quite good and the chicken supreme that somehow managed to be dry-textured though not overcooked and almost completely flavorless. The bread is very good."

  • "We had a very delicious 3 course meal with a Groupon voucher. We had exceptional service and very accurate recommendations from the wait staff. It wasn't very busy so it was quiet and intimate. I would recommend this restaurant."
