Diner Reviews
  • "We went for the Jazz Brunch featuring Annette St. John and her trio! We (my husband, a friend, myself and three children)Ives our experience and would surely go back! The food was superb, my recommendation Lobster Benedict... To die for! It is a small place so make reservations? Groups of more them 4 you may need to use two seperate reservations but you can note to be seated together; which was no problem! Jazz brunch was great but I would like to go one evening without the kids too!"

  • "We were four, with a 15-yr. old jazz fan from Paris. We didn't know what to expect since we didn't know the Baylor Project, but they were excellent. The place is intimate and great for a quite evening listening to jazz and eating. The food is not great but it's good enough. We will definitely go back."

  • "I have been to Smoke a number of time, primarily for the top notch music. This visit I went to see the outstanding Baylor Project. Catch them before they blow up which will happen once their cd is released. The food is decent/could stand improvement. I had a prix fix dinner of fried chicken and I have had much better at better prices. However my companion raved about the salmon. So the truth is somewhere in between. Overall, I had a very enjoyable evening at Smoke and would return. I have always enjoyed the intimacy of the club and the calibre of the music. Besides there are other things on the menu that are tasty, and the drinks are good. Overall Smoke is a great place to take a date or go with your family or friends for an outing."

  • "I have to say I was disappointed...the waitress was terrible, the drinks I ordered, Absolut and soda, was watered down, the area where we were seated was so tight you could barely move and we waited 20 extra minutes to be seated when we had a 8:30 reservation."

  • "we had read about Smoke and it lived up to its reputation. the jazz was terrific and the ambience near perfect. the food was less than perfect though certainly passable. I just expected more from a NYC club. but you don't come here for the food, you come for the jazz. the staff were friendly and accommodating and again the jazz was wonderful. A must see if any visit to NYC"

  • "The food was better than I expected. Highly recommend the steak, it was prepared to perfection. The jazz music was great!"

  • "I came to hear Mike LeDonne's Groover Quartet - which is worth the trip in itself. Yet, as a foodie, I am continually impressed by the cuisine and service at Smoke. I had the bartender select three courses from the weeknight Prix Fixe menu. The popcorn shrimp were crispy fried and tasty with a slightly tangy aioli. Second, the Salmon was served with clams and chorizo in a wonderful broth. Finally, the dessert was a simple, yet tasty bowl of fresh seasonal berries topped with whipped cream. The wines by the glass are carefully selected to pair with the foods. Service was great and the energy at this club is outstanding for serious jazz lovers as well as casual listeners alike."

  • "The food was out of this world. The intimate venue was perfect. My only complaint was that the time went by tooo quickly! I would ave loved to have been there all night!"

  • "The title sums it up. We were provided disgusting lamb sliders and terrible burgers for the main course. The brownie was clearly microwaved from frozen. Abysmal food; great music and atmosphere. Would go again."

  • "Well it was my first time in new york as an actual tourist and as I looked for things to do this place came up in a coupon website. All I have to say is that I am so glad that i went and trusted my gut. I had the chicken and cornbread. First of all I was already full because of the appetizers I had the lamb mini burgers but even though I was already full by the time the entree came I devoured it. The chicken was cooked to perfection it was crispy and spicy but not too spicy. The cornbread was sweet and mixed well with the chicken in my mouth. I was blown away with everything presented there as well. The live music is a bit too loud but the singer was great. She was a true soul singer. I love this place. I will go back soon."

  • "the music is always pretty wonderful and the venue is intimate. The food tries too hard to be the greasy spoon of new orleans - not cheap. One goes for music."

  • "My husband and I were out on a date night and to see Eric Alexander, my friends husband and leader of the quartet playing that night. He and his band were phenonenal!! He offered to take a request and played a lovely bossa nova. The food was absolutely delicious. The only reason I gave four stars instead of 5 is because the food was a little cold. It was so good I finished every bite. I had the blackened snapper and my husband the roasted chicken. The bread pudding is a must! Our waitress was very nice and accommodating. I wish I remembered her name (Alison?) She was great. We had a wonderful evening!"

  • "Although the food, service and ambience are all very good, sometimes excellent, diners go to Smoke primarily, if not exclusively, for the jazz, which is excellent."

  • "Been quite of fan of this jazz supper club until now--the jazz is still divine but the food has gone south. Husband and I paid premium on a Saturday night (cover charge plus pricey menu) and we were not happy. Salad advertised as "organic baby greens with confit grape tomatoes" was lettuce with exactly two raw tomatoes. For some reason, our entrees were the last to be served during the show (though we were one of the first to order) and arrived lukewarm. BBQ ribs were tough and chewy, coleslaw dry, and french fries over fried and tiny. Jambalaya was okay, but had only one piece of sausage. At these prices, we expect more."

  • "i was delighted my husband was very pleased with this surprise date i planned. i came because Helen Sung was scheduled. we were not disappointed @ all. we arrived in manhattan about an hour before our reservation. as stated on website, we asked if we could be accommodated & sure enough! we were able to enjoy the end of one set and a full second set. the food was fresh & delicious. i was amazed at how efficient feeding everyone was with such a seemingly small venue."

  • "Smoke is an intimate jazz club with a great atmosphere. Food in most jazz places is quite poor - Smoke is an exception. We had a great evening - good food, good music and very friendly proprietor who really cares"

  • "very good atmosphere and great performance by Mr. Generet and band...a bit awkward is the rushy 90 minute slot you get to eat and hear one set of Jazz...a concept us europeans cannot get used to :-)"

  • "I just wish there was more room to sit down and eat properly. The tables were so close to each other that when the other patron was eating, he kept elbowing me by mistake. Requesting a little bit more space between tables (if possible) next time. "

  • "I had an amazing night. Wonderful music by Mr. Jimmy Cobb and his band - and special guest George Coleman (Miles Davis Celebration) and a amazing finish with the Sugar Hill Quartet (with another special guest - only singing, but ok - The Real Deal Johnnie O´Neal). I´m from Brazil and it´s my secound trip do NY. But every time I go to NY I´ll be at the Smoke Jazz. The table was ready when I arrived at the bar. I bought my tickets online directly from Brazil and I had no problem. And the crew members were extremely attentive and helpful. "

  • "I have been to Smoke about 5 times since moving to NYC. I love going with my husband for date night and also take friends/family who enjoy jazz. The club put together great acts, and I have never been disappointed with the music. They do multiple sets at night so you can come for an early or late dinner. Check out the website – it has a lot of good information on the seating, reservations, etc. Also, while the musicians are playing, they ask the crowd to keep conversations to a minimum. This is a good place for small groups (2 – 3). The cuisine is soul food (fried chicken with collard greens – yum!) and is nicely done. They also have a great cocktail list. "

  • "I am not a fan of jazz but I took a friend for his birthday because he likes jazz music and I actually really enjoyed it. The music was very good, I loved the atmosphere of the restaurant, it is very small and cosy. The food is okay but you go there for the whole experience. We waited a bit before being served but the waitress was very nice and it was not a problem we had to wait"

  • "A wonderful club which has the distinction of serving the best food of any jazz club in New York. Go for the music, but definitely eat something!"

  • "The restaurant was nice and cozy. The staff was pleasant, and the food and drinks were good. The band seemed a little unorganized at first and the music was a little loud considering the size of the restaurant, but overall the experience was enjoyable. I’d visit again."
