Diner Reviews
  • "Don't assume that just because you have a reservation they have space or the set hasn't started yet. Made a reservation on OpenTable and got there to find there was no table for me and the set was beginning. The hostess was nice enough to offer us free drinks, but there weren't even seats at the bar, we were just shoved on an aisle. Ultimately we left and ate at Toast."

  • "I have visited this establishment on two other occasions and was very pleased. But on this particular visit everything was a mess. The food was cold and unseasoned. The waitress was very unattentive. We arrived 5 minutes early then the reservation time and was turned away. The vocalisit was unprofessional. She was cursing on stage and began talking about how drunk she was and no one knew the songs in the band. The band would stop playing in the middle of the song and start all over again. By the time they got it together people had started to leave out of frustration. While I like the establishment after this experience I will think again about returning."

  • "This place literally seats about 40 people. If that much. But it's great because no matter where you're seated, you get a great view of the stage. We had the seafood pasta that i did not enjoy, the seafood was undercooked and the pasta was very bland. for appetizers we got lamb sliders they where absolutely delicious. My only con was the tables were SO close together i kept getting elbowed which i did not enjoy but the ambiance was great."

  • "We were visiting New York. Our son found this place online and we asked if we could tag along. Smoke & Jazz is small, crowded and noisy with amazing food and a staff that made us feel like friends - just what a jazz club should be. The Savory Bread Pudding with Sauteed Spinach was beautiful and delicious. Everyone in our party felt the same about what they ordered. The Baylor Project was playing that evening and delivered the most unique and beautiful version of Gershwin's Summertime. Very fine muscians all of them, but friendly and fun as well. Apparantly the word is out, as they were completely sold out on a Thursday evening. We wish them the very best and will definitely visit again."

  • "We had a great musical and gastronomic time at Smoke Jazz Club: the jazz band is energetic, the ambience is convivial and friendly, and it's not too crowdy. I would definetly recommend it!"

  • "The idea of dinner and a live jazz show brought us in. The show was awesome, and the meal was good. We went for restaurant week and the portions were huge and the meal tasty. The dessert was lacking, however, and the service was a little slow, which is why the lower stars. It's a great time, but don't go for conversation.. There's no talking during the show."

  • "I've been to SMOKE twice to see Dave Stryker's guitar performances with good jazz groups. I was pleasantly surprised to find a lovely club with fine dining and wine menus, a pleasant ambiance and attentive service. How lucky for us west-siders in the Columbia Univ. area to have such a convenient and great place to eat and enjoy marvelous jazz. bjmtrio, NYC"

  • "On a trip to NYC from DC last weekend I saw that the Cyrus Chestnut Trio would be playing at Smoke so I immediately made my reservation for dinner and 7 p.m. show through OpenTable. I was very pleasantly surprised when I arrived to find that my table was right next to the stage. I'd had the fried chicken before (so someone else in our party had it that night) and I went for the ribs. Both were excellent, and we splurged on a bottle of Artemis to celebrate our good fortune of being in definitely the right place at the right time. Whenever I come to NYC I look to see who's at Smoke - they have an excellent room for jazz, book good artists, and the food and the service are very enjoyable. Bob C"

  • "Early dinner on a Thur. night, so there were empty tables. Really enjoyed listening to jazz, hearing Gregory Generet sing and meeting him afterward. Wonderful! Dinner seatings and placing orders are done in advance of the music playing, which is very smart. Baby greens salad - delicious; tomato-mozzarella salad: tomatoes weren't ripe but cheese was very good. Cedar plank steak - excellent; jambalaya: lobster was a bit overcooked and rubbery, but overall flavor was very good; soft-shell crab comes deep-fried - it was "mushy" inside, so it was sent back and removed from our bill. Yummy dessert. If you like wine, there are a couple of good bottles @$100+; avoid the rest."

  • "We have not been to Smokes for a couple of years but decided on this trip to New York to revisit it. We were not disappointed. Music, food and service were all excellent. For those who enjoy good jazz Smokes is the place to go."

  • "Great atmosphere, music and service. The good was bland and not what I was expecting from this type of restaurant. I would come again but just get drinks from the bar. The service and staff were truly great!"

  • "We loved the atmosphere at Smoke and jazz. The food was not bad too, though my dish was very underspiced. We felt a bit inconvenient to eat and applause at the same time, but apparently musicians do not mind that much. All in all, it was a great evening and good decision to spend it at Smoke."

  • "A booking at 8.30 and one set of jazz doesn't leave you a lot of time to eat and enjoy the jazz. Before ordering and being served, you are down to one hour for the 3 courses that are more or less mandatory due to the minimum of a 38$ Purchase per person."

  • "Great venue for jazz and dinner. Service was attentive, though not disruptive. Time to chat; time to listen to and appreciate the musicians and their music."

  • "We went for the Jazz Brunch featuring Annette St. John and her trio! We (my husband, a friend, myself and three children)Ives our experience and would surely go back! The food was superb, my recommendation Lobster Benedict... To die for! It is a small place so make reservations? Groups of more them 4 you may need to use two seperate reservations but you can note to be seated together; which was no problem! Jazz brunch was great but I would like to go one evening without the kids too!"

  • "We were four, with a 15-yr. old jazz fan from Paris. We didn't know what to expect since we didn't know the Baylor Project, but they were excellent. The place is intimate and great for a quite evening listening to jazz and eating. The food is not great but it's good enough. We will definitely go back."

  • "I have been to Smoke a number of time, primarily for the top notch music. This visit I went to see the outstanding Baylor Project. Catch them before they blow up which will happen once their cd is released. The food is decent/could stand improvement. I had a prix fix dinner of fried chicken and I have had much better at better prices. However my companion raved about the salmon. So the truth is somewhere in between. Overall, I had a very enjoyable evening at Smoke and would return. I have always enjoyed the intimacy of the club and the calibre of the music. Besides there are other things on the menu that are tasty, and the drinks are good. Overall Smoke is a great place to take a date or go with your family or friends for an outing."

  • "I have to say I was disappointed...the waitress was terrible, the drinks I ordered, Absolut and soda, was watered down, the area where we were seated was so tight you could barely move and we waited 20 extra minutes to be seated when we had a 8:30 reservation."

  • "Great place to enjoy jazz. Intimate, more than decent food. Warm atmosphere. A must in New York."

  • "we had read about Smoke and it lived up to its reputation. the jazz was terrific and the ambience near perfect. the food was less than perfect though certainly passable. I just expected more from a NYC club. but you don't come here for the food, you come for the jazz. the staff were friendly and accommodating and again the jazz was wonderful. A must see if any visit to NYC"

  • "I came to hear Mike LeDonne's Groover Quartet - which is worth the trip in itself. Yet, as a foodie, I am continually impressed by the cuisine and service at Smoke. I had the bartender select three courses from the weeknight Prix Fixe menu. The popcorn shrimp were crispy fried and tasty with a slightly tangy aioli. Second, the Salmon was served with clams and chorizo in a wonderful broth. Finally, the dessert was a simple, yet tasty bowl of fresh seasonal berries topped with whipped cream. The wines by the glass are carefully selected to pair with the foods. Service was great and the energy at this club is outstanding for serious jazz lovers as well as casual listeners alike."

  • "The food was out of this world. The intimate venue was perfect. My only complaint was that the time went by tooo quickly! I would ave loved to have been there all night!"

  • "The title sums it up. We were provided disgusting lamb sliders and terrible burgers for the main course. The brownie was clearly microwaved from frozen. Abysmal food; great music and atmosphere. Would go again."
