Smithfields prides themselves in being "meatcentric". Their menu chooses bold items like brisket, trout, fried chicken and duck confit adds sides like collard greens, baby Lima beans and goat cheese fries and combines them with well thought out sauces and/or seasonings to create delicate dishes you can't stop eating. The bone marrow and bacon fritters with chive creme appetizers were amazing! Cutting into a light fritter a pop of steam escapes almost daring you to eat it, and the melt in your mouth marrow served with house pickled vegetables and sourdough baguette slices was worth a trip back alone. An excellent bar with an excelent tender fun butcher shop style decor and an extremely well thought out menu makes Smithfields a must! Go now!

Smithfield's claims to be "meatcentric"! After eating there, I imagine one could see how this indeed could be true. Here in lies my problem. I am not a meatcentric type person. As a matter of fact any leanings toward meat, as I perceive it, has been a basic turn off for me. Then again, my idea of meat is beef, pork, wild game, and perhaps chicken, but certainly not fish. But then again, my perception! Bottom line! Don't be too quick to judge! My judgement has cost me many good meals I believe at Smithfield's. I could not have been more pleased with the dining experience. The menu was charged with so many excellent choices, no one could every leave hungry and certainly not dissatisfied. An excellent choice and I will return many times!

This manages to be both a casual and a finding dining restaurant, so imagine that. The food is quirky and consistently good. I was craving a good hamburger and mine didn't disappoint. My companions had shrimp and grits and a special barbecue platter with fall-off-the-bone ribs and delicious, tangy baked beans. The strawberry sorbet tasted freshly homemade as did the pecan ice cream. I probably wouldn't order the pear bread pudding again -- it was more bread than anything else -- but I'll definitely come back for more. A word to the hard of hearing: This place is LOUD. And because it's hard to hear conversations, people talked louder to be heard, which amplified the problem. They definitely need to fix that. Otherwise, outstanding.

I had the seared salmon w/ polenta on Wednesday night and came home so singing Smithfield's praises that my gal made me take her there for dinner last night. I had the goat cheese soufflé, excellent, and Margie the burger. We're already making plans w/ friends to get back to Smithfield's to work our way through the menu. These people are serious about their food; well worth a visit. PS: the Manhattan the bartender made me was excellent...

My husband and I really enjoyed our dinner at Smithfield's. We started with a crisp, fresh salad and then shared a BBQ plate with ribs, chicken, and brisket, baked beans and homemade potato salad. The preparation and quality were excellent. We ended our meal with praline ice cream that was creamy and delicious.

Visited on a Sunday evening at 8 PM. Based on previous reviews, had our hearts set on some of the specials - bone marrow, lamb porterhouse, etc. All were sold out. Yes, it is noisy, and as the autumn progresses, it becomes the only space to utilize. Wife had the cassoulet and we agreed it was unconventional, very tasty and good. I had the house smoked (12 hours) brisket. Very authentic - smoky, proper coloration, right amount of spice and - very unauthentic - tough. A $10 corkage fee is much appreciated in an era of socking it to wine collectors. Would like to test the meat menu which is their specialty. We were hoping for an extraordinary evening, but because it was a Sunday night, it was just very good, with exceptions noted above.

Ate here two years ago, and my steak was overcooked, so this time, I ordered my steak "red and cool in the middle". What arrived was pink and warm. There should be no excuse for a steakhouse overcooking a steak. But it gets worse. The steak was sliced into strips, so it was clearly visible that the steak was overcooked, and it wasn't post-plating! Further, as happened two years ago, the server seemed surprised that I didn't consider pink&warm to be "rare". Considering I'd defined rare when ordering, there's just no excuse for this. Service was friendly and relatively expedient, but extremely disappointing at this price point. Drinks from the bar were also disappointing. Sadly, will not be returning. This is NOT a "steakhouse."

... we ate outside and could finally hear each other talk. It is ok outside, some flowers would help. We were there for Sunday brunch. We had a forty minute wait from the time we ordered our food, but the waitress warned us ahead of time. Of the food we ordered that morning, the chocolate mousse, hash, sausage and orange marmalade were excellent. The shrimp and grits were bland, and I found no bacon in mine,as was advertised. I. Eggs were overcooked. Portion sizes were ample. Smithfields really needs to buy more coffee carafes to put at your table

A perfect Anniversary evening! Packed, but our reserved table was ready. Fun, lively atmosphere. Food was unique and unbelievable- we had the Goat Cheese Souffle (one of the very best dishes I have ever tasted - the cheese and beets are the perfect compliment to each other!), Duck Confit - amazing!, Hanger Steak w/ Collard Greens and NY Strip w/ Mash and Crimini Gravy. All cooked perfectly & so delicious. Server was personable and helpful, had to wait a bit due to full house but enjoyed appetizer, Bacon Beignet's are to die for! and drinks (great selection). Finally dessert - more beignet's with house made salted caramel ice cream and Tira"mousso"- both perfection! This was our first visit, but certainly not the last.

Smithfields was a surprising find. With the subtitle "Meat Centric" I was expecting that they would do meat, to find that their side dishes were cleverly thought out for taste, without becoming avant-garde weird. There are enough odd/weird restaurants in Ashland, it was nice that Smithfields focused on the core value of taste, while using quality ingredients. Wine list had many lovely finds for pairing with our meal.

My wife and I decided on the spur of the moment to try Smithfields. We stopped in and were told that without reservations we would have to wait two hours in the bar. We left and requested a reservation on Open Table. The first available reservation was 15 minutes not two hours. We returned to the restaurant and informed them that we had a reservation. They checked their computer, found our reservation, and expressed frustration with my "sneaky" behavior. We were offered seats at the bar despite availability of tables. The food was generally good. The service was slow.

The atmosphere outside was very nice and private. The service wasn't bad. It was our first time and we had been meaning to try the meat centric restaurant for a long time. The food did not meet our expectations. Perhaps we ordered the wrong items, but the fish and chips were too battered and not cooked fully and the fried chicken had a weird, almost slimy consistency. Both dishes were way over salted. The salad had nice flavors and the mash potatoes with crimini gravy was good. Not sure we will return with the prices being a little high...

I read the reviews prior to making reservations for brunch and had great expectations upon presenting to the restaurant, but a few areas fell short. 1. My order was brought out cooked incorrectly and it took another 25 minutes to receive my food which, fortunately, was cooked correctly. 2. Service was spotty...communication between the wait staff was lacking. Overall, not a good impression on my first, and probably last, visit to this restaurant when Ashland has so many to chose from.

This was our first time at Smithfields and it was better than the many pub style restaurants that have popped up in Ashland but still not anything to write home about. Obviously it is a place for carnivores so you should stick to the meat dishes. If you are in touch with your cardiologist on a regular basis, he marrow bone appetizer is excellent and generous, as was the pork belly main course. My hanger steak good if a bit more chewy than expected. The salmon was over cooked but so many places do that it is not surprising. The wine list is limited but very fairly priced. It won't make our list of "must go to' places in Ashland but we may be back if we are in Ashland for more than four dinners

If you haven't been to Smithfields, go there. If you don't live in Ashland, go there and then go to Smithfields. As a carnivore, they are one of my favorite meat-centric restaurants. The menu is organized a little weird, but the 'bacon beignets' are on the left and everything on the left side is excellent. The service was excellent; at one point, the server moved an umbrella off the deck and tipped it over the provide a sun-block. Knew his stuff, suggested good wine-parings and was helpful without hovering. We had dinner outside ~6:30 and the place filled as we sat. Get a reservation. The sun set during the course of the meal, with us in shade before the valley below. Really nice view.

The side portion of mac and cheese was superb, buy could feed to or three people. Only disappointment is you aren't guaranteed white or dark meet if you order chicken, so I passed on it and opted for steak. Loved the onion rings. The mash was average - I wouldn't pay for it as a side. The pork was moist and really well done. The servers, however, were beyond exceptional. You could tell they love what they do. Waiter was knowledgeable with great recommendations. Atmosphere was relaxed. Not too fancy and not too pub-like. Loved it. Will definitely return.

The food was well prepared and tasty. My husband's lamb porterhouse was a novelty and extremely tender. My hanger steak was quite good and the fries were top rate. Minuses: though the restaurant wasn't full, they tried to seat us next to a wall where there would be no elbow room -- we requested and were given a different table. I had wanted to order their excellent fried chicken and was told there would be a 45 minute wait, so I made another choice. Both of our main courses took 45 minutes anyhow! Smithfield's is one of my favorite restaurants. Owner Neil Clooney is a fabulous chef and the ever-changing menu is always exciting. In summer the patio is delightful and host Dee and her staff are gracious and welcoming. Although it specializes in meat dishes, vegetarians can always find something delectable. Try "yesterday's soup" for starters. Lots of hard surfaces so a bit noisy but worth it--also great selection of cocktails and draft beer.

We ordered the corned beef item for brunch as well as a biscuit with gravy and a piece of fried chicken. And proceeded to wait for over 45 minutes for our order with no apologies whatsoever from the waiter. The slice of corned beef was a very dry, thick hunk of meat and not particularly tender. This from a restaurant that calls itself "meat centric". The potatoes that came with it were nicely seasoned. The piece of fried chicken was also done nicely, but to charge $13 for a very small biscuit, some mushroom gravy and a small piece of chicken was definitely overpriced. The patio area is lovely and if you have all kinds of time to spend before getting your food, you might like this place.

Smithfields is a good choice for brunch but it has a limited lunch menu. The steak sandwich and eggs & sausage were good while the service was a bit slow. The kitchen took more than 45 minutes to deliver our meal despite only ten tables occupied. The waitress sat down at one of the tables to talk with locals and it took a bit of time to get our check before showtime. We did however enjoy lunch and would return again when in Ashland.

My husband had the BBQ platter - everything had a unique flavour and was clearly well-planned and presented. I had the homemade fried chicken with chived mashed potatoes and mushroom sauce, which was extremely tasty! Our waiter was wonderful and friendly, but not overly talkative - much appreciated and the other service crew was attentive and well-presented.
