Smith & Wollensky - New YorkGood Steak, nice sidesSmith & Wollensky was the first steak restaurant I dined in. You never forget your first. However, the memories are better than reality when seen through rose colored glasses. The steaks and sides were certainly well prepared. There are a plethora of steakhouses in NYC and this restaurant seems to have moved a litlle towards the middle of the pack. I messed up my reaervation date abd they were quick to accomdate our group anyway. Loved that!! Food was incredible. The new york steak might have been as big as every steak i had eaten combined in my life to this point. And it was Delicious! My wife is still talking about thelobster three days later. Just a wonderful dinner. Would highly recommend it anytime you are in NewYork. Just bring money. It is not a twenty dollar meal. The large portions, impeccable friendly service and with upscale historic ambience even the most picky steak enthusiast would find thoroughly enjoyable. You just can't beat the best melt-in-your-mouth steak experience at Smith & Wollenskys! Food for thought when ordering would be the Cajun filet mignon. We were originally Manny Wolf fans when they closed and S&W opened we tried them and never regretted a single meal.

Picked Smith and Wollensky when a few other choices were booked up on a Saturday night. We were not disappointed and this wasn't a second fiddle choice. The seafood Bouquet was a fantastic appetizer that was a meal in itself. The steak and prime rib were great and cooked to expectation. Desserts were pretty darn good, too. Service was prompt without being smothering. I started it out with a wonderful beet salad with mixed greens and pecans. It was delicious! Next we order our steaks with sides. The quality of the steaks are outstanding, juicy and done to perfection.

Our party of 4 started at the bar where Dermott, the bartender, was personable and professional. At the advice of another reviewer we sat downstairs where the regulars typically sit. It had the traditional S&W feel and the wait staff was very accommodating. Huge lobster, rib steak and filet with roquefort were superb! Barely enough room for dessert. I enjoyed the best and biggest fillet steak I have ever had and the sides were great especially the onion rings. The staff were great and congratulated us with a glass of fizz to start which was a really nice touch. They also recommended the small portion of onion rings when we ordered large, knowing the small would be enough and it was, which was good that they didn't just let us pay the extra. I've always been a fan of Peter Lugers and wrote smith and wollensky off as an old school stodgy steakhouse. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the steak. I ate at Peter Lugers two weeks ago and I enjoyed this meal more. Warning - medium rare was closer to rare than medium. The hash browns were decadently delicious but overly salty. S&W dry ages their own beef and cooks it to perfection. The waiter sold me on the bone-in ribeye, and while that was way too much food for me, I ate every bite of it and would do it again! My husband had the filet mignon, and again, it was cooked exactly the way he ordered it and cleaned his plate. We shared the hashbrowns, a S&W specialty and if we had been able to finish them, we would have! A pleasant surprise for a side dish. The first table setting was in an area that did not allow too much space. The second area was in a very dark corner. So finally, the host said, sit anyplace you want. He later apologized and the evening went very well. I had the Halibut, it was a little on the dry side. The sides were very good. The waiter, Keith, was excellent, as well, as the helper, Jay.
