Diner Reviews
  • "My eight year old son decided this year for his birthday instead of a typical kid's run around, bounce house, laser tag party he wanted to go to a real New York Steakhouse. Though only eight he considers himself quite the foodie and Smith and Wollensky did not disappoint. Everything was fantastic, from the calamari appetizer, to the ceaser salad, to the roasted cauliflower, hash browns,Mac and chees and porterhouse for two."

  • "Smith & Wollensky - New York Lovely location and frenetix atmosphere. Great food, too much in fact. Staff extremely friendly. Some of of service was sporadic, but it was really busy, and it we were in no hurry to leave!"

  • "Overall, it was a fair experience but not great. It had been recommended to me by two colleagues but we were disappointed it did not live up to the hype. Tables close together. Food was good but we expected much better. Waiter was knowledgable but not very friendly until he dropped off our bill. Atmosphere was old but not in a friendly historic way. The bartender was very pleasant. We probably should have eaten in the bar. Table was barely big enough to fit food for two. At least the price was appropriate for the food we received."

  • "It was very crowded and while the food was good, it wasn't great for the price. Given the service, which was horrible I can't give this well known steak house a good rating."

  • "Went on a date and had the cajun ribeye, which I was told is the thing to get. It was quite good and the mean was clearly dry aged quite well. She had fist (red snapper) and was very happy with it. The breads were satisfying and the tuna tartar appetizer was of good quality tuna. All in all, this was an enjoyable experience and delicious steak."

  • "You feel the history when you walk in and greeted by the Maitre'd as if he has known you for years. This steakhouse mecca didn't disappoint as the rib eye cooked to a perfect med-rare as my two guest shared the classic porterhouse for 2 with the same perfect results. The sides of cream spinach and hash browns made it even better. Our server knew his way around the menu and was top notch when it came to service. He never skipped a beat. Overall a great time ,great service and amazing steaks. When it's this good no need to change it.."

  • "This Place is AMAZING!!! The food here is delectable. came here for an early dinner after a hectic work week, and the service was awesome! The waiter was super attentive and patient..as (i'm very indecisive) but nontheless he recommended the best dishes. My steak was cooked to pefection. I can't wait to come back. BEST STEAK HOUSE IN MIDTOWN BY FAR!"

  • "How can such an institution allow its servers to be so disrespectful to its guests. Yes the meat is good, when the fish is poorly cooked - most probably direct from the microwave. But having brought clients from abroad, I lived a very embarrassing moment, with servers impatient and nearly rude to my guests. Never again will I set foot in a place which charges a fortune but has no respect for its clients !! Stay away, there are so many places with excellent meat in NYC."

  • "S@W is an old time steakhouse that still hold its charm in 2014. It's what a steakhouse should be. Great portions exceptional service by staff that is a solid as the restarrant is. No fading reputation here ,this is the real deal and in a class that only real steahouse afficianadios understand. The wife loved the lamb chops and said they were the best she's ever eaten. My steak was superb!"

  • "It is one of ny icons. Great food. It was way too loud as there were several tables of 10+ guys having bachelor parties. Great food, courteous wait staff. A very dynamic helpfully doorman."

  • "It is an historic restaurant which brings in much interest and I'm sure it was fabulous in its heyday...however, the salad was dripping in salad dressing, the steak lacked flavor, the macaroni and cheese was very bland and the sautéed spinach had burnt pieces of garlic which ruined the taste. The restaurant may be a bit overrated because of its history....maybe just a bit of refreshing the menu and more attention to innovation in the preparation of the food."

  • "Well the name says it all. It has been rated one of the top 10 place to go for steak for years now. I had the porterhouse for 2 last nite it was very good. 2 Sides with it Great Food."

  • "I never had a bone in filet. Well i will never be the same now since. Wow! Also Pride wine is a small botique vineyard in Napa and hard to find. Great job"

  • "In my opinion it's on the same level of Peter Lugers. We had Caesar salad and the New England clam chowder as appetisers. I have to admit their soup is the best I have ever had. Then we ordered the Porterhouse for 2 with roasted cauliflower and baked potato. They roasted a whole cauliflower and a big one too. It was divine. We also had one glass of wine and one margarita for $250, tip included. It was worth it every single penny. The meat was huge, moist and sweet we barely finished it as well as the potato and cauliflower. I believe another person could have eaten with us and we would have deeply enjoyed the dinner. The service was ok, not as good as the food. For that price one expects more but I would definitively return."

  • "Had not eaten here in some time, so I was thankful to see that the food was as good as I remember. Equally important was the high level of service and professionalism received from our waiter and wait staff."

  • "great steaks, well made, big portions, wine list ok, variety of wine by the glass can be improved, pricing of bottled wines outrageous"

  • "One of my favorite NYC Steak houses. Had a table for 3 in a relatively quite location which I had requested. The filet mignon was think, juicy and perfectly cooked. The veal chop was outstanding and the halibut with the Asian sesame sauce was delicious. Topping it off with the pecan pie ala mode ended a great meal."

  • "I ate the best steak I've ever had at this place as well as delicious sides and dessert. It was for my Father's 60th birthday and it didn't disappoint. The atmosphere, food, service, everything about it was great and I left feeling satisfied and happy. Although the prices are a little steep it's totally worth the money, especially for a special occasion like this was."

  • "Excellent service. The food is quite disappointing and overly expensive including desserts and sides. The chicken was far better than the bland steak."

  • "When you leave at the restaurant $250 for couple, you expect some exceptional dining experience. It was good, but not more than this, the meet was a bit disappointing, lets say I had better stakes for less money."

  • "No famous faces but the best parts of midtown business energy is inevitable here, in a good way. Loud and not cheap, if you are looking for a place to bring a client that is impressive but not trying too hard, l'originale Smith and Wolly's won't disappoint"

  • "We ordered the seafood sampler for 2 and added a 6 stone crab claws. It was enough for all 5 of us as a great appetizer. We ordered a prime rib, ribeye and lamb chops for dinner and it was way too much for 5 to share. The service was absolutely the best and I am ashamed that I cannot remember our servers name as he was awesome."

  • "Twice a year the S&W restaurant group brings diners "Wine Week," a rotating selection of about a dozen wines for tasting and enjoying (all you want) for $10. It's a can't miss experience. Add in a medium rare bone-in sirloin and the pea soup appetizer and it's a meal to delight."

  • "Food was ok service not great, everywhere else we have been the service has been fantastic, if you can taste the difference between a 50 dollar bottle of wine and a 1000 dollar bottle I guess you will like it , food price not bad but wine was expensive ."

  • "Very busy restaurant. Porterhouse steak was fantastic. Very expensive though. Be careful the waiter asks you if you would like a glass of sparkling water while you look at the menus then charges you $9 for it at the end!"

  • "During lunch, we waited 1 hour between app and our food because a health inspector was in the kitchen. For a 2pm res there were only a few other tables busy. When our steak came out, 1 out of 3 steaks was cooked properly. 2 were well cooked and one of These was well cooked unevenly. I expected more. I wasn't incomfortable, but I could see how some people would be if 4 servers were hovering near by. You could hear their comversation."

  • "The filet and the sirloin were of high quality but they were both more than medium rare as ordered. Spinach was excellent, as were the desserts. Service was somewhat casual, and $5.75 for a tiny espresso does seem excessive."

  • "Amazing food and perfect service. I love coming here every time we visit NY."

  • "If you like steaks this is a good place for them. Service is informal, food is good (I found the onion rings particularly tasty). Nothing incredible, but overall a good dining experience for standard new york prices (which means expensive in absolute terms)."
