Before leaving California I searched the internet looking for a special steakhouse to celebrate my husband's 45th birthday. All I had to go on was the websites of the different restaurants and reviews I found on different sites. I choose S&W because of their menu. I wanted a place with American Classic food of nice portions. We couldn't have been more pleased. From the moment we stepped into the door we felt welcomed. We were instantly greeted by the Maitre d' and had not been seated at our table for that long before our Waiter came over to greet us. It was 1st class service throughout the evening. It was my boys' birthdays and they brought out two generous pieces of cake (about 1/4 of a cake) with candles for the boys.

A short walk from my office, the food, ambiance and service are consistently great with a variety options from beef, chicken to seafood pleasing to all. Starting as a table of 12, we had a couple cancellations and streamed in late due to heavy tourist traffic (cherry blossoms). The staff took it all in stride. The appetizers and cocktails were perfect (I'd go back just for the bar!) and the entrees, especially the steaks, were some of the best many of us had ever had. The wine, an Oregon Pinot Noir, was terrific; just the right body with silvery finish. Perhaps the best part of the experience was the service. Our waiter was in full command of the menu with a personable/fun demeanor that brought everything together. For us, S&W retained their reputation and rightful place as a DC standout. We were celebrating my adult son's birthday. My son was greeted with a "Happy Birthday" wish. When we were seated he was given a card signed by the staff wishing him a great day.
Our waiter was incredibly helpful in describing some of the selections and had perfect timing.
The portions were perfect for my 6 foot 3" son, but a little overwhelming for me. He will have leftovers for the week.
He was given a free piece of cake which was a quarter of a 14" cake.

I had a caesar salad that was okay (it could've used a little more flavor) but the bread they served us is probably some of the best I've ever had at a restaurant in a long time. I had the salmon "Oscar" style (a delish white sauce with crab meat, spinach and asparagus) which was really good! It was actually a large portion and quite flavorful. My wife had the 14oz filet mignon "Oscar" style and loved the way that it was seared and seasoned. The sides were also pretty good...creamy spinach with the mac & cheese. She received a birthday card from the staff when we arrived. We celebrated with somoe sparkling cider, had a great meal with very attentive service and concluded with a wonderful dessert.
