Diner Reviews
  • "Absolutely best filet I have ever had. Our waiter was outstanding and new the meaning of great service."

  • "The signature drinks and dessert were tasty! However, I am reluctant to suggest dining here b/c: -server explained the menu in great detail to the middle-aged couple next to us, but only asked us if we had questions - at such an upscale restaurant I was surprised that they served the end of the tomato, with the root attached, in my wedge salad - Patio Seating: Only after I explained that I was a magnet for Mosquitos did the staff put out the lanterns that repel them within 12 to 15 feet and offered OFF spray. The lanterns should've been put out PRIOR to the evening service! I ended up with 30+ bites! In the future, I hope that the staff starts to treat all patrons equally and that the kitchen verifies food quality before sending it out."

  • "This was my 2nd year coming here for Restaurant Week. I was a little disappointed that the menu had not changed. While the food was good, a bit more variety in the Restaurant Week menu would be nice."

  • "My first time to Smith & Wollesnsky, and I had messaged ahead that this was "date night." The restaurant was WONDERFUL - special, quiet table and our waiter was so attentive describing the menu options. It had a lot of charm and the food was plentiful and simply fell off the fork. We will be back!!!"

  • "Wonderful food and service. Great outdoor dining complete with table cloths."

  • "The bread had been reheated and was stale. The cheesecake didn't have much flavor at all. For the price, it was not worth it."

  • "Best steak in town. Outstanding service. Beautiful bar."

  • "Great cuts of meat and yummy side dishes to share make this place a special treat. I love the truffled Mac n cheese, the split pea soup and any steak on the menu. For a treat add bacon lardons to your soup. Be sure to save room for dessert"

  • "I like the S&W chain. It's reliable with good food no matter which location one visits. Unfortunately, the DC branch didn't offer prime rib that night--but the porterhouse for two was terrific. Large wine list--don't be afraid of the house label red, it's on the affordable side and is quite good. Join their dining club and enter the number when making reservations, you get benefits during the meal, not just points afterwards."

  • "From the moment we walked in and were given he option of sitting in the nook with the view of the kitchen (we were celebrating a special occassion) to the surprise slice of borthday cake and candles that came after dinner, everything about our experience at Smith and Wollensly was nothing but exceptional. Everyone's steak was cooked to perfection and the fact that there was not one scrap of food left on anyone's plate was evidence that all of the food was fantastic! The hostess, server and manager all were friendly and attentive and helped make it a special experience. I visit a lot of steakhouses and this ranks as one of the top experiences."

  • "Food was delicious, service was excellent. Surprisingly, the place was very quiet foe being a Friday night, which I will chalk up to people being on vacation in the summer. There is no other reason for this place not to be crowded (other than maybe the prices, which are high, but are justified). Definitely will be going back."

  • "My wife and I say S&W is our favorite Steakhouse. We usually visit the Philadelphia location and have never been disappointed. We bought our young adult kids to celebrate them and the food was disappointing. Maybe it was a bad night."

  • "My wife and I are very dissapointed of the restaurant. Our expectations were huge due to the fact that we had visited several branches of Smith & Wollensky (New York, Las Vegas) with excellent results. This was our first time in Washington, DC and we took the decision to go to your restaurant, however, the service was the worst, the food (aged potterhouse was not served in properly coaction), in general the restaurant seems to be in decadency. Unfortunately was a very bad experience and we will never again visit one of your branches."

  • "Two of the steaks were not cooked as requested. Our server, Jamel was very attentive and eager to learn. My experience when eating at a steak house is to know exactly how the meat has been prepared and what breed of beef I am eating, Aberdeen Angus etc. The overall cost of the meal was very high and compared with other restaurants such as Bobby Vans. This relates to the quality and quantity of elements such as the scallops. We were also advised that the very thin asparagus was how you ate it in Washington. Well I have to tell you that when I walked round Fresh Foods, the asparagus was exactly the same size as we eat it in the UK. So I am not convinced about the sizing issue because candidly ours was pretty crinkled and limp."

  • "My husband and I were visiting Washington, DC. He had eaten at this restaurant on a previous business trip. Walking distance from our hotel. Now I am so glad that he suggested it. It is very welcoming and a friendly restaurant. Our server was outstanding. My husband had the filet which he declared one of the best he has eaten. I had their signature crab cake as an appetizer which was delicious. It is very unique as it is mostly big chunks of crab meat and not much breading. Yummy!! The lobster was my choice. Our server said it would be cracked for me. When it arrived, it was not. Our server saw it and immediately took it back, and it came back beautifully cracked. It was delicious. Would highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "The food was great, everyone loved their steaks. The seafood platter was very fresh and wonderful. The service was a bit slow especially considering we were the only seated table in that section, most of the restaurant was empty. Overall a good meal."

  • "Steaks as usual were exceptional. Wedge salad was fabulous with the most beautiful tomato I've seen this year. Chocolate cake was delicious and could easily feed 4!"

  • "interesting decor inside, seems a bit outdated and in need of a bit of an upgrade. there was no one at lunch, and the server disappeared at moments. the food was fine, nothing special. lobster salad was oddly presented and way overdressed, the lobster itself was delicious. much better steak places around for lunch, disappointed."

  • "My lunch guest and I enjoyed sitting on the terrace on a pleasant day. The waitress told us about the 'special' soup Gazpacho, which sounded good to both of us. However, When it arrived there were two pieces of shrimp garnishing the dish, and my guest is allergic to shellfish. No mention of the shrimp was made be the waitress beforehand. When we asked them to bring a bowl without the shrimp for her, the said it was the last bowl (at 12:15). Also, Open Table emailed me that I had not honored the reservation, even though I checked on on time and gave my name saying I had a reservation."

  • "Upon arrival the outside patio was buzzing, clearly a hot spot that might have been nice but I was there for a business meeting/dinner. My request for the chefs table was honored so that helped tremendously although I'm sure anywhere in the restaurant would have been fine. Food was outstanding! Service was impeccable. Clients were very impressed. Will definitely do again when in the City."

  • "Not sure which was better the attentive and excellent service of our waiter Habib, or the well prepared and complimented steaks. S&W never fails to please and provide a delicious meal. Topped off by this absolutely decadent coconut cake. They always manage to tease the buds!"

  • "Filet au poivre was ok, cooked as ordered. Sides were very average at best, asparagus was well over cooked, and not fresh. "Signature" pea soup was watery and pretty bland. Loud atmosphere was hard to have a conversation. Were out of the special wines we ordered. Very much an average experience."

  • "We went here to celebrate my college graduation. We had two waiters, as one would expect at a VERY expensive restaurant. Our waitress took over 45 minutes to get us our check after she and her counterpart disappeared from thin air. Sitting at the chefs table was nice, but upon looking in, the staff, including what seemed to be a manager, refused to acknowledge us. Two of us attempted to split a 24 oz. steak and the waitress ended up bringing us two and charging us for both, and we were left with the remainder we didn't want and had to pay for it. I asked for dessert to be wrapped up and watched it sit in the kitchen for half an hour in plain sight. I was shocked at the service we got for such an expensive place and will not return. "

  • "Usually, S&W is impeccable, however this particular time when I ordered ribeye "rare" it came closer to a "medium" condition..."

  • "Having been to Sam & Harry's, Ruth Chris, 1789 and Mortons. Smith and Wollensky did not fail in really making my Mom feel extra special and catered to on Mother's Day and for that I am truly thankful for. The food was incredible, the service good and the chef completely accommodating. I will be going back again soon. "

  • "We have eaten here before and at other Smith and Wollensky's so it lived up to our expectations. It is expensive but the portions are generous. The salad alone could be a meal. But the filet is not to be missed. Overall a good choice for a special occasion and a good meal. The service was impeccable and friendly. We ate on the early side so it wasn't very busy."

  • "Celebrated success and achievements of our son's studies as a senior 'hospitality management' college student and wanted to show him one of the best steak house restaurants in Washington DC and we think it was the right decision to come here: absolute first class food, perfect traditional service and nice ambiance. We did not only enjoy a wonderful evening, our son learnt also a lot about great guest services."

  • "This location is one of my favorite Smith & Wollensky's, unfortunately my experience was subpar. There was some confusion since the beginning, we waited for a while before a server came to greet us and then it was a different server. I ordered my steak medium but it was definitely medium-well not as flavorful. "

  • "Smith and Wollensky still have some of the best steaks in town. The service is erratic. Maybe the restaurant is good during the week, but the weekend dining experience is not getting the same attention. We were there Saturday night. We sat under the moose head and were offered bread immediately, but refused it. Then we waited for 45 minutes: no water, no offer of drinks, nothing. Finally we flagged down a passing waiter and pleaded for service. This server was Noah; he was great. Our table was out of his assigned service area, but he made a big effort to get us some food, for heaven's sake. He gave us a free bowl of berries at the end and apologized profusely, but he can't be expected to always make up for poor service management."
