We normally go to Ruth's Chris for a good steak dinner. We heard Smith & Wollensky was better than the rest so we tried it during their extension of restaurant week. It wasn't. With advertising signs in the dining area and a somewhat aging decor, the atmosphere was like a cheap chain restaurant past its prime. We had to pay extra to get an uninspiring side instead of just a steak. The steak was good but not better than the other steakhouses in town. The dessert was not good enough to finish. Although not busy, waiter was acceptable but not quite as attentive or welcoming as one expects at a fine restaurant. All in all we would not return. If you offer restaurant week, don't do so just to fill your empty tables, put your best foot forward.

The signature drinks and dessert were tasty! However, I am reluctant to suggest dining here b/c: -server explained the menu in great detail to the middle-aged couple next to us, but only asked us if we had questions - at such an upscale restaurant I was surprised that they served the end of the tomato, with the root attached, in my wedge salad - Patio Seating: Only after I explained that I was a magnet for Mosquitos did the staff put out the lanterns that repel them within 12 to 15 feet and offered OFF spray. The lanterns should've been put out PRIOR to the evening service! I ended up with 30+ bites! In the future, I hope that the staff starts to treat all patrons equally and that the kitchen verifies food quality before sending it out.

We enjoyed the taste of the food. However, the service could have been better and faster. There was not a long list of items to choose from for restaurant week but for some reason our server did not take our order right away. We had to call her and tell her we were ready. My friend ordered a burger well done but it was very pink inside. My food was fine. I asked for an additional side but did not know asparagus was $13.00! I would think that the server would give me that knowledge. We asked in advance for our dessert to go since it took so long to order and get food as we only have 1 hour for lunch. Unfortunately, she took forever to come back with our dessert so we ended up very late back to work.

My first time to Smith & Wollesnsky, and I had messaged ahead that this was "date night." The restaurant was WONDERFUL - special, quiet table and our waiter was so attentive describing the menu options. It had a lot of charm and the food was plentiful and simply fell off the fork. We will be back!!!

I like the S&W chain. It's reliable with good food no matter which location one visits. Unfortunately, the DC branch didn't offer prime rib that night--but the porterhouse for two was terrific. Large wine list--don't be afraid of the house label red, it's on the affordable side and is quite good. Join their dining club and enter the number when making reservations, you get benefits during the meal, not just points afterwards.

From the moment we walked in and were given he option of sitting in the nook with the view of the kitchen (we were celebrating a special occassion) to the surprise slice of borthday cake and candles that came after dinner, everything about our experience at Smith and Wollensly was nothing but exceptional. Everyone's steak was cooked to perfection and the fact that there was not one scrap of food left on anyone's plate was evidence that all of the food was fantastic! The hostess, server and manager all were friendly and attentive and helped make it a special experience. I visit a lot of steakhouses and this ranks as one of the top experiences.

Food was delicious, service was excellent. Surprisingly, the place was very quiet foe being a Friday night, which I will chalk up to people being on vacation in the summer. There is no other reason for this place not to be crowded (other than maybe the prices, which are high, but are justified). Definitely will be going back.

My wife and I are very dissapointed of the restaurant. Our expectations were huge due to the fact that we had visited several branches of Smith & Wollensky (New York, Las Vegas) with excellent results. This was our first time in Washington, DC and we took the decision to go to your restaurant, however, the service was the worst, the food (aged potterhouse was not served in properly coaction), in general the restaurant seems to be in decadency. Unfortunately was a very bad experience and we will never again visit one of your branches.

Two of the steaks were not cooked as requested. Our server, Jamel was very attentive and eager to learn. My experience when eating at a steak house is to know exactly how the meat has been prepared and what breed of beef I am eating, Aberdeen Angus etc. The overall cost of the meal was very high and compared with other restaurants such as Bobby Vans. This relates to the quality and quantity of elements such as the scallops. We were also advised that the very thin asparagus was how you ate it in Washington. Well I have to tell you that when I walked round Fresh Foods, the asparagus was exactly the same size as we eat it in the UK. So I am not convinced about the sizing issue because candidly ours was pretty crinkled and limp.

My husband and I were visiting Washington, DC. He had eaten at this restaurant on a previous business trip. Walking distance from our hotel. Now I am so glad that he suggested it. It is very welcoming and a friendly restaurant. Our server was outstanding. My husband had the filet which he declared one of the best he has eaten. I had their signature crab cake as an appetizer which was delicious. It is very unique as it is mostly big chunks of crab meat and not much breading. Yummy!! The lobster was my choice. Our server said it would be cracked for me. When it arrived, it was not. Our server saw it and immediately took it back, and it came back beautifully cracked. It was delicious. Would highly recommend this restaurant.

My lunch guest and I enjoyed sitting on the terrace on a pleasant day. The waitress told us about the 'special' soup Gazpacho, which sounded good to both of us. However, When it arrived there were two pieces of shrimp garnishing the dish, and my guest is allergic to shellfish. No mention of the shrimp was made be the waitress beforehand. When we asked them to bring a bowl without the shrimp for her, the said it was the last bowl (at 12:15). Also, Open Table emailed me that I had not honored the reservation, even though I checked on on time and gave my name saying I had a reservation.

Filet au poivre was ok, cooked as ordered. Sides were very average at best, asparagus was well over cooked, and not fresh. "Signature" pea soup was watery and pretty bland. Loud atmosphere was hard to have a conversation. Were out of the special wines we ordered. Very much an average experience.

We went here to celebrate my college graduation. We had two waiters, as one would expect at a VERY expensive restaurant. Our waitress took over 45 minutes to get us our check after she and her counterpart disappeared from thin air. Sitting at the chefs table was nice, but upon looking in, the staff, including what seemed to be a manager, refused to acknowledge us. Two of us attempted to split a 24 oz. steak and the waitress ended up bringing us two and charging us for both, and we were left with the remainder we didn't want and had to pay for it. I asked for dessert to be wrapped up and watched it sit in the kitchen for half an hour in plain sight. I was shocked at the service we got for such an expensive place and will not return.

This location is one of my favorite Smith & Wollensky's, unfortunately my experience was subpar. There was some confusion since the beginning, we waited for a while before a server came to greet us and then it was a different server. I ordered my steak medium but it was definitely medium-well not as flavorful.
