Diner Reviews
  • "Steaks as usual were exceptional. Wedge salad was fabulous with the most beautiful tomato I've seen this year. Chocolate cake was delicious and could easily feed 4!"

  • "My lunch guest and I enjoyed sitting on the terrace on a pleasant day. The waitress told us about the 'special' soup Gazpacho, which sounded good to both of us. However, When it arrived there were two pieces of shrimp garnishing the dish, and my guest is allergic to shellfish. No mention of the shrimp was made be the waitress beforehand. When we asked them to bring a bowl without the shrimp for her, the said it was the last bowl (at 12:15). Also, Open Table emailed me that I had not honored the reservation, even though I checked on on time and gave my name saying I had a reservation."

  • "Upon arrival the outside patio was buzzing, clearly a hot spot that might have been nice but I was there for a business meeting/dinner. My request for the chefs table was honored so that helped tremendously although I'm sure anywhere in the restaurant would have been fine. Food was outstanding! Service was impeccable. Clients were very impressed. Will definitely do again when in the City."

  • "Not sure which was better the attentive and excellent service of our waiter Habib, or the well prepared and complimented steaks. S&W never fails to please and provide a delicious meal. Topped off by this absolutely decadent coconut cake. They always manage to tease the buds!"

  • "Filet au poivre was ok, cooked as ordered. Sides were very average at best, asparagus was well over cooked, and not fresh. "Signature" pea soup was watery and pretty bland. Loud atmosphere was hard to have a conversation. Were out of the special wines we ordered. Very much an average experience."

  • "We went here to celebrate my college graduation. We had two waiters, as one would expect at a VERY expensive restaurant. Our waitress took over 45 minutes to get us our check after she and her counterpart disappeared from thin air. Sitting at the chefs table was nice, but upon looking in, the staff, including what seemed to be a manager, refused to acknowledge us. Two of us attempted to split a 24 oz. steak and the waitress ended up bringing us two and charging us for both, and we were left with the remainder we didn't want and had to pay for it. I asked for dessert to be wrapped up and watched it sit in the kitchen for half an hour in plain sight. I was shocked at the service we got for such an expensive place and will not return. "

  • "Usually, S&W is impeccable, however this particular time when I ordered ribeye "rare" it came closer to a "medium" condition..."

  • "This location is one of my favorite Smith & Wollensky's, unfortunately my experience was subpar. There was some confusion since the beginning, we waited for a while before a server came to greet us and then it was a different server. I ordered my steak medium but it was definitely medium-well not as flavorful. "

  • "We have eaten here before and at other Smith and Wollensky's so it lived up to our expectations. It is expensive but the portions are generous. The salad alone could be a meal. But the filet is not to be missed. Overall a good choice for a special occasion and a good meal. The service was impeccable and friendly. We ate on the early side so it wasn't very busy."

  • "Having been to Sam & Harry's, Ruth Chris, 1789 and Mortons. Smith and Wollensky did not fail in really making my Mom feel extra special and catered to on Mother's Day and for that I am truly thankful for. The food was incredible, the service good and the chef completely accommodating. I will be going back again soon. "

  • "Celebrated success and achievements of our son's studies as a senior 'hospitality management' college student and wanted to show him one of the best steak house restaurants in Washington DC and we think it was the right decision to come here: absolute first class food, perfect traditional service and nice ambiance. We did not only enjoy a wonderful evening, our son learnt also a lot about great guest services."

  • "Smith and Wollensky still have some of the best steaks in town. The service is erratic. Maybe the restaurant is good during the week, but the weekend dining experience is not getting the same attention. We were there Saturday night. We sat under the moose head and were offered bread immediately, but refused it. Then we waited for 45 minutes: no water, no offer of drinks, nothing. Finally we flagged down a passing waiter and pleaded for service. This server was Noah; he was great. Our table was out of his assigned service area, but he made a big effort to get us some food, for heaven's sake. He gave us a free bowl of berries at the end and apologized profusely, but he can't be expected to always make up for poor service management."

  • "Was first time at this historic restaurant. I enjoyed a superb business lunch. Wait staff was extremely helpful in finding me the ideal location for my business lunch. Very attentive wait staff, prompt, friendly, professional. Food was served timely, all correct temperatures, hot was hot and salads were crisp and cold, all very fresh, cooked to perfection. Enjoyed the historic atmosphere. Ideal for business lunches and dinners, as well as special occasions. Great accommodations for groups, as well as the one-to-one dining experience. Will be back as soon as possible!"

  • "I loved the Bone in Filet, every bite was flavorful and very tender. Coconut cake had fresh shaved coconut was generous portion but was to die for. Would be visiting Smith and Wollensky again."

  • "S & W continues to be one of the most select steak houses in DC. I think it is far better than The Palm, Morton's or Shula's. I look forward to every visit here. It's not cheap, but the quality and quantity of the food matches the price. The wine list is truly amazing."

  • "Ten of us went for a special work lunch and it was wonderful. We even had two vegetarians that ate very well. The creamed spinach is amazing (yes, really, creamed spinach amazing?!)."

  • "Being made to stand outside in the cold & rain until the doors open at 11:30 (my reservation was at 11:30 with my clients so I got there 15 minutes early) is not indicative of a fine restaurant. It set the tone for a bad experience. Hostess was just not warm and inviting at all, although eventually she "allowed" (her word) me to sit with my briefcase, umbrella, etc at a table next to the bar until I was seated at my actual table. I got to listen to the manager interview a candidate. The server himself was excellent. Will not bring any client lunches back there in the future."

  • "I had a business group for dinner and requested a quiet area. We were seated in our own little section which was perfect. Very quiet and ideal for conversation. Something you can't get at The Palm."

  • "Tuesday of the March 2014 Wine Week had some of the best wines in years for this event. An attentive server who kept an eye on the glasses and progression of wines as well as clean glasses made the lunch even better."

  • "Wonderful dinner. Our server Noah was a gem - knowledgeable and friendly. The food was extraordinary. I was shocked it was so dead inside. When I visited the Chicago location you had to wait for a table, but this place was almost empty on a Saturday night. No matter, we had an amazing dinner. The quality of the meats was second-to-none."

  • "As a "steak connoisseur", I highly recommend Smith & Wollensky. While this was my first visit to the restaurant, it will not be the last. My dining partner and I both ordered the bone-in filet, and it was prepared perfectly for each of us. The meat was flavorful and tender with subtle charring. As a side dish, our server recommended the truffled macaroni and cheese, citing it as the restaurant's most popular item. We both heartily attest that the reputation is well deserved as it was delectable. My dining partner has a sweet tooth and ordered the coconut cake, which was another wonderful recommendation from our server. Although I usually do not eat cake or coconut, I was compelled to share this dessert --- it was that good."

  • "My wife and I dined here for a special occasion. The service was nowhere near what you would expect at a restaurant of this class. We had to wait a very long time for our water and for the food order to be taken. The only thing we didn't have to wait for was the check at the end of the evening. The food was fair - again nothing like the quality that you would expect from this class of a restaurant. Next time we're in town will try a different restaurant."

  • "Through Open Table I was able to book a table for 10:00 p.m. When we arrived to the restaurant we realized it was basically empty and we immediately felt the waiter's stress for having to receive us late that night. He rushed us through dinner and was not very polite. He placed the ticket on our table, universal code for "it's time to leave". I would have preferred to be told there was no reservations available due to the time. It is a shame I am not writing about the food."

  • "This was my second time at this restaurant. My first experience was great! The food was good, and the service was wonderful, however my most recent visit was not as great. We ordered the Porter House Steak for two, and parts of it were burnt. Considering the price you pay for a meal of this caliber, I would assume that a restaurant that specializes in dry aged steak would know how prepare this steak without burning it. The service was lack luster. The waiter forgot to refill out drinks, and was slow and not as attentive to us as he was to others. The seats were falling apart, and definitely needed to be repaired. I had to switch seats to keep from sinking in my seat. After this visit, I will not be returning to Smith and Wollensky."

  • "Took my Son and his God Brother here for Dinner as it was a special occasion for them; They coudn't stop taking pictures so they would show it to their friends; They loved the food and i wasn't very far behind; I've dined internationally in 4 Continents, with all ranges of dining experience and food is serious bussines to me, but for some sublime reasons, it didn't feel like a steakhouse to me; other than that everything was great; We would go back."

  • "I ordered the 10 oz fillet cooked to med wen and it was completely dry and and cooked beyond well done. I have been to this restaurant every visit I make to DC but do not plan to visit again based on this bad experience. I was with a colleague from work so did not send the steak back but would have if it was not a corporate group Thank you"

  • "Having dined at many S&W restaurants in other cities this was my first vist to the Washington DC location. I'm in DC a bit but had never got around to go the S&W in town. That was a mistake. This may be one of their best. It's a great location and a nice quiet but elegant atmosphere. The food was fantastic and the wait staff very professional. Very nice. Well done S&W."

  • "With so many steak house choices in WDC, this place really likes character. It reminded me of the Peter Lugar restuarant in Brooklyn, NYC...without all the cahce that Peter's place carries. The Prime Rib, The Palm, Capitol Grill...probably all better places with similar fare. The food was really good though. It is NOT inexpensive."

  • "The food is great! I love the bread, the salad, and the sides. Hands down one of the best steaks I have ever had! Well worth every penny. Normally, my service is stellar. It was not great this time around. I am sure it was just a fluke."

  • "We had an exceptional experience at Smith & Wollensky! Our server, Hannah, was wonderful. She was very knowledgeable about the menu, friendly and talkative with our group. The food exceeded our expectations. My husband and I started with the PEI Mussels - he is NOT a lover of mussels and agreed that they were delicious. He had the spinach salad and couldn't say enough good things about it. I had the Wollensky salad, which is always my favorite and we shared the Porterhouse for 2 for dinner. We don't eat our meat at the same temperature, so that was a slight problem, as it was a little overdone for me and a little underdone for him, but truly, we should have ordered separate steaks! I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone!!"
