Diner Reviews
  • "As always our experience at Smith & Wollensky was outstanding. The service has always been 1st class. Our server Jawad is a true asset to the restaurant. His memory of what we like is amazing. The surf and turf was perfect as was the halibut. The wine that Jawad recommended was superb and the appetizers(his pick as well) were delicious. We enjoy Smith and Wollensky and find it to be one of the best restaurants in Philly."

  • "Food was just ok but nothing special. Six of us and each ordered different things; everyone had this reaction. The steaks were the best; don't order non-beef. Touted pea soup was slightly better than Campbell's. Fish (both salmon and halibut) was fresh and prepared as ordered, but with absolutely no imagination, special flavor or accompaniment. They accommodated special request for grilled halibut rather than in stock. Wine list is ABYSMAL for a chain that should know about wine & the trends. Not a single sauvignon blanc from New Zealand; the (pricey) S&W signature CA sauvignon blanc was bitter, but not crisp; no citrus or mineral notes. S Ameriocan one not much better. Service unacceptably slow and inattentive with no crowd."

  • "People in our group had Maine lobster, bone-in ribeye, bone-in filet, veal chop rib eye and pan seared salmon. Everyone thought their dishes were outstanding. Our side dishes included buttermilk onion rings and creamed spinach. Up-front dishes included the Wollensky salad, the white bean soup of the day, chilled iceberg lettuce and colossal lump crab meat cocktail. Each and every one of those dishes were also terrific."

  • "Smith and Wollensky never disappoints. The food is perfect. The service is perfect. The atmosphere is perfect. We truly feel spoiled and catered-to every time we dine there. It is our "go to" place for every special occasion that we celebrate."

  • "I ordered a medium rare steak expecting a juicy filet from a top steak house on Rittenhouse Sq. My steak was red and extremely dry in the center and flavorless. Also, would have expected mor choices as sides. Only green veggie was grilled asparagas. I was dining with a customer who ordered the ribeye and said his was fine. I did not send mine back or complain because I did not want to interrupt the dinner meeting. Will not return. Worst steak ever at a high end steakhouse but the company and dinner conversation was exceptional. "

  • "Go for the steak and nothing else - it was very good. It's ambience is dated - as if they are established and no need to impress. Sides and salads - and even the bread - were rich and laden with oils. This is definitely a one and done kind of restaurant. Our waiter Rick was great and down to earth as well as informative. The overall price wasn't too bad considering the name and location, however, $30 for valet parking was a bit steep for 90 minutes."

  • "We started with a something floating in my cocktail then the asparagus was overcooked and my wife's steak was undercooked. I have had better meals for a lot less money elsewere."

  • "Good steak, if a bit dry. Rest of the food very good. Too bad a wine in the wine lisy was not available ( needs updating). Very attentive service and nice table with a view of the park."

  • "We have been going to Smith and Wollensky for a number of years and have always found the food, service and ambiance to be exceptional. We would recommend it for any occasion. This was our fist brunch at the restaurant after numerous enjoyable dinners. We were not disappointed. "

  • "Bar had maybe a dozen people. 1 obnoxious 12 yr old kid could be heard throughout the restaurant Food not as good as usual..not cooked the way I ordered. Too tired & hungry to send it back Bread the best..warm & tasty Knew the waiter, he is a neighborhood gem. Heard business is off, economy has taken a toll on fine restaurants. Liked Capital Grill better. "

  • "I can easily tell that it was one of the best steaks I have ever had in my life (& I have been to a lot of top steak-houses in North America). We went for my boyfriend's Birthday. From the beginning everyone knew already & wishes him happy birthday! They gave him a b-day card too not to mention a complementary birthday cake slice at the end :-) it was absolutely delicious. We both had the 14 ounce filet mignon. He had it medium & I had it done medium rare. It was exquisite. It melted in our mouths & the price was extremely reasonable compared to other steakhouses in the area. We had the duck-fat roasted vegetables & the wild mushroom sides for two. Amazing! Service was highly professional & impeccable. Stunning views of Rittenhouse square!"

  • "The view from the second floor of Rittenhouse Park is magnificient; probably one of the most desirable views in Philadelphia. The service and food are always memorable. Looking forward to another dinig experience in the future."

  • "Always a good time at S&W. We have starting coming every few months for a great meal and excellent service. Ian was a quality server when we were there Friday and our usual table was held for us to enjoy the view while dining on a great meal."

  • "We had been to this restaurant in Boston and decided to try the one in Philly. It is great. Great good, service and atmosphere. Melissa was our server and she was wonderful. Their homemade breads are amazing!"

  • "My single complaint about my dinner at Smith and Wollensky has to do with their price for a bottle of Silver Oak (2009 Alexander Valley) Cabernet ($195.00) - and this was part of their special one-free-steak offering. Silver Oaks offers this selection for $70.00. This may be standard restaurant industry mark-up, but it caught me off guard. Ultimately, of course, it was my choice to pay the $292.00, dinner-for-two tab, plus 20% tip, but I do intend to at least inform my FB and Twitter 'friends' of my pricing experience at Smith and Wollensky, so they can make an informed choice about the restaurant. Everything else was wonderful. The steaks were exquisite and the roasted vegetables (in duck fat, I believe) were really, really good."

  • "We had a magnificent experience at S & W. I had made reservations through Open Table and noted on the website why the evening was a special occasion. The message did not go unnoticed. We had a meal that did not disappoint and was every bit the experience we have had in South Beach time and again. Our server was extremely attentive without being intrusive, knowledgeable about the menu, pleasant and polite and addressed us by name. Our courses were served in a timely manner without being rushed, were hot on arrival, and the filets were perfectly prepared as we had ordered. We were pleasantly surprised that our dessert was complimentary in celebration of our special event. All-in-all, a wonderful evening, great food."

  • "We have dined at S&W whenever we stay at The Rittenhouse. We have never been disappointed the service and food is always top shelf. We strongly recommend Smith & Wollensky at the Rittenhouse. We can't wait to return."

  • "One and a half hour after appetizers. We left because the main course never came in The lettuce was not fresh and the lobster bisque was just a lobster flavored soup They started to blame each other Not recommended at all The waiter never checked the status of our order in the kitchen Drinks are good"

  • "Service was horrible, and poor service ruins the entire meal. The waiter completely forgot to take our order after appetizers and when we asked him to take it he said "the other guy didn't do it?" What "other guy?" The food was bland and overdone. I used to love this restaurant! At these prices they need to do better..."

  • "The menu is as you would expect at a steak house. The food is well prepared but not great. Service was very attentive. Cost was high for food and wine resulting in just a fair value."

  • "For a $209 plus bill for 2 people, I wasn't amazed. It was a very good steak though. The sides and appetizers were so so. The break was by far the best part of the meal.... seriously, it's unreal."

  • "Had dinner with friends here while on a business trip. We sat at a window table overlooking Rittinhouse square. I don't eat red meat or chicken, but there were plenty if seafood choices on the menu, and they were willing to be flexible with the menu. The bread was so good I would have been happy to eat it with my ginger pear martini. I ordered the crab cakes, which were excellent. (I am from Maryland so I know good crab cakes!). The steak eaters in our group were happy as well. I also tasted a friend's swordfish and believe it was the best I've had. It was pricey, but worth the splurge."

  • "Wine Week at Smith & Wollensky does not disappoint. Presented with a beautiful view through the floor to ceiling windows from our second story booth overlooking historic Rittenhouse Square, it was hard to imagine being distracted inside the wood-trimmed interior of the restaurant, but we were. Easily overshadowed by delicious food, fabulous service and an outstanding wine week selection, the view from Smith & Wollensky became a beautiful backdrop, not the star of the show. If you know the view, you also know it takes some doing to accomplish this. Wine Week at Smith & Wollensky's is the perfect meandering, relaxing afternoon get away for enjoying great food, service and friends in one of Philadelphia's finer restaurant."

  • "We have been talking for the last two days about what a good time we had and how good the steaks were. The roasted root vegetables roasted in duck fat were sinfully delicious. Our server was friendly and efficient."

  • "First time to visit the S&W in Philly, on a cold winter night. Steaks to perfection, excellent wine, wonderful salad and dessert - comfort food at the high end. Good location on Rittenhouse Square."

  • "I've been to lots of steak joints but Smith &Wollensky rates pretty high on the list. The food was great. My steak was cooked perfectly Our waiter was informative and friendly and laid back....not pretentious at all. We had a couple of drinks at the bar before our reservation which lingered beyond our seating time and the staff was very accommodating to let us continue. We had a really larger able for 4 with great window view of Rittenhouse Square. My only "critique" was that for a Friday night there was not a big crowd adding to a vibrant atmosphere. Overall a great experience and a place I would highly recommend."

  • "We decided to celebrate Valentine's day a little late this year and made it a group dinner. We all had a very good time at dinner and really enjoyed the food. We were happy they were able to sit us at a round table (group of 6) but wished it wasn't in the back corner of the restaurant."

  • "We are usually regulars of Del Friscos, but couldn't get reservations so we decided to try something different. We had read some good reviews about this restaurant and decided to try it out. Absolutely won't do that again. First off the noise level was unbearable. It was so loud with patron noise that we could hardly hear each other above the deafening roar. It took one hour from the time we placed our order to receive our steak. The steak was not impressive at all. The seasoning was bland, and the cut reminded me of something we would purchase in our local supermarket. Not to mention it must have sat on the counter for a few minutes before we got it because it was nearly room temperature. We were so let down , waitress was nice."

  • "A great evening overall. My only reservation was that my steak (the big rib eye) was close to flavorless. My 2 dinner guests had filets that were better. Appetizers and sides were excellent, as was the service."

  • "For me, spending $45 or more for just a piece of meat is a seldom indulgence. My guests and I were really excited to eat here...what a disappointment! For a place that isn't afraid to charge top dollar: After a delay, wrong dressing on wedge salad (second salad was awesome!). My filet was badly overcooked...twice!! Charred and tasteless. Very slow service. Server inquired about dessert so late we had to take it to go. There were no other tables being served. EMPTY! Manager and Server were nice, BUT Manager offered...nothing! No coffee, drink, dessert, gift card, credit...just an apology. NEVER would happen at Morton's or Ruth's Chris. Maybe that's why we were the only party. Sent email to restaurant 2 days ago...no response."
