Diner Reviews
  • "Service was awful and steak was overcooked. The waiter gave no effort to introduce himself, the restaurant, the menu and was very inattentive."

  • "The steaks here are top shelf, but on this visit, I had a craving for a seared tuna. It did not disappoint. Phenomenal peice of sashimi grade tuna, expertly prepared."

  • "Down to every single detail, our dinner was fabulous. High quality food, high quality service and stellar view of the river."

  • "There are so many choices of steak houses in Chicago. This one happens to has the best location and view, directly on the Chicago river. Aside from the cuts of beef, portion size and the service being superb, I was fortunate to have Gerald as my server and Cyrus as my busboy. Gerald is knowledgeable, accommodating and friendly. I wish he was a family member. He is such a pleasure. Our party of 7 all had beef, except for my wife. She raved about her salmon. My boys loved their oversized burgers and mash. We shall return!"

  • "Great food and amazing service by our waiter!!! He was super nice and quit frankly the only one nice in that restaurant. Upon arriving we were not greeted and talked to very rudely as I had requested outside dining. We were told that was not possible bc of our size. I wish they would have told me that when confirmation of our reservations then was told the downstairs was closed due to renovations. No where on open table did It say that when making the reservation. Very disappointed. The food and waiter definitely made up for aome of it but for someone who lives Out of state and specifically chose this place for the water river view it was disappointing. Wish they would have been a little nicer in the front."

  • "This was once a great spit but food and service is really bad I ordered the sea food tower and fish was bad I will say to folks stay away. The place also treats African Americans badly had to wait 15 minutes for awaited to even bring water...stay away"

  • "Food good, but expensive... a/c was not working, very hot inside. tables packed too close"

  • "We had a reservation for 6:30 but arrived a bit early. We were seated immediately with our choice of indoor or outdoor seating. We chose to eat outside. The seating was well spaced and we received prompt service. The outdoor deck has a lovely view of the water and although it was quite warm a slight breeze kept it comfortable. We had a wonderful seafood appetizer and selected a great bottle of wine for dinner. One party had the bone in rib-eye and the other had the halibut. The steak was cooked perfectly. The fish was flaky and delicious. Sides were the mushrooms and asparagus. Both were very well seasoned and cooked to perfection. We had a wonderful evening. Great food, great service - highly recommend."

  • "we were there on a 90 degree night. A/c sucked. service average. Food pretty good. I'll never dine there again. :-( tasty wine though"

  • "Have to say this place is above reproach the staff is at your very beckon call this establishment was well thought out as in food, service, and a warm friendly atmosphere my wife and I had a wonderful time thanks so much"

  • "Although the steaks were good, the prices were high. I do not feel that I the pricing was appropriate for the meal. Service was great and the bread probably the best part of the meal. Wine selections were okay but prices were really over the top."

  • "The food was delicious and the service was exceptional. Any one of the service staff that walked past our table took care of whatever we needed; water refill, wine refill, bread replenishment, etc. We sat outside which was beautiful but it did tend to get a little loud with the action on the river and on the streets. Unfortunately, we really couldn't see the river while sitting down but that didn't matter to us too much. Highly recommend their lobster bisque."

  • "We had the best dinner here. The food was outstanding, the service was superb, and the outdoor dining was very comfortable. You do pay for this type of service, but it was well worth the night."

  • "The service was better than the food quality. Although the waiter was excellent, he completely forgot about our Appetizer and never brought it at all. I had the Filet Oscar which was very good although my husband had the bone in filet which was substandard in quality and taste. It was too fatty, stringy and the taste was aweful. I tried it myself and I had to agree 100%. We did not mention to the waiter because he didn't want to cause a scene, it was not the waiters fault. Past visits were very good but this one time bad experience leaves us not to frequent again as there are too many other better options out there. Unfortunately he never wishes to return. Kudo's to the mixologist who made a very tasty cocktail for me."

  • " Typical fare, service and price to other Chicago Steak houses. Which is to say it's very good. Service was a little more efficient and friendly/warmer than others."

  • "Have been to a lot of great steakhouses and S&W ranks up there with the best of them. Impeccable service, great food and drinks, wonderful vibe."

  • "Fantastic Restaurant, Had the Cajun Bone In Ribeye and the flavor just popped out of the steak. Was cooked to a perfect medium rare"

  • "No shortage of fine steak houses in Chicago. S & W steps up their well reputed dining experience with professional and charming servers. It makes a world of difference. Gerald was articulate, charming, and passionate. The location on the Chicago River is both romantic, and scenic. There is no kids menu and half pound burgers were offered. No worries, the exciting chatter in the air drowned out any traces of children. Location definitely sets them apart. We will keep coming back as long as we can afford it. No worries!"

  • "The service from start to finish was excellent. The food was first class: my steak & her tuna were perfection. a great post-theater experiance."

  • "The food and the service at Smith and Wollensky were both very good. My husband and I split a caesar salad and the featured surf and turf which was a 10 oz filet and a lobster tail. It was more than enough food for the two of us, and the waiter split the portions for us. We ordered the steak medium-rare, and it came out medium, but it was still good. The lobster was delicious. The view was ok, but our table was not as close to the water as we would have liked. There was a very loud group sitting next to us for most of the night, so it made talking difficult. The service was good, and the wait staff was attentive. I will probably try a different steak restaurant the next time we visit Chicago."

  • "The food and service were only average. The serving sizes were more than sufficient. Even the creme brûlée was great, it did not make up for the meal."
    Dined on 7/4/2014
  • "It was a bit noisy this visit, the doors were open to the veranda and construction went on all during lunch on the riverwalk. My mistake, had I realized it I would have asked to be seated on the lower level"
    Dined on 7/2/2014
  • "I was offered a dessert so no complaints. I did t want one and that was it. I go to nice restaurants every week and was a bit taken back. Not to my expectation."

  • "Best steak, Caesar salad and service in Chicago. We don't go to Chicago without at least one stop for dinner at S&W."
    Dined on 6/29/2014
  • "We really like S&W - as a brand, and as a place for consistently good steak. That said, our experience this weekend wasn't outstanding. The restaurant was not crowded - we were given our requested table by a window overlooking the river - but the "feel" and ambience of the house just lacked the energy we expected. A good steakhouse feels warm, a little boozy, a little jazzy - and S&W last Saturday felt a little cold and tired. Beyond the decor and physical ambience issues, the servers seemed a little disconnected and a couple were even bickering with each other. There are so many places now serving good steak, it feels a little like the management team could take a hard look at the atmosphere and experience being created at S&W Chicago."

  • "The menu offers a limited venue of steaks. Although the steaks offered were all outstanding. There were three of us dining and everything was great. A little pricey but you expect that from great restaurants. We were not rushed and service was also outstanding."

  • "Got to the restaurant at 6:00 and ordered our drinks, appetizer, etc within the first five minutes. Drinks and appetizer came very quickly, and the salad arrived while we were just finishing our appetizer, but then.......... we waited and waited and waited and 45 minutes later we told our waiter that we had theater tickets and needed our food! He said he had checked earlier, but really we were having a steak and some crab cakes, not like that takes time to cook. We finally got our dinner and hour and a half after we sat down! The manager took the price of 2 glasses of wine off the tab, but still we should have had our dinner within an hour of sitting down."

  • "Waiter got order wrong. I ordered the bone-in filet, medium. Bone-in rib eye came, sent it back. Bone in filet came out about 5 min later, medium RARE. Husband ordered N.Y. Strip, medium. His steak was more on the medium-well to well done stage. I am sure his sat under lights while they cooked the filet."

  • "S&W has good reviews online & was actually recommended by a friend. I was not a fan & this is why, there is some steak club thing going on here. When we walked in from the street & gave the host on the main level our name. He directed us downstairs to the "grill" which would be fine if the dining experience wasn't really different. I could tell that sitting on the main floor was NOT an option for us. We got a window table that overlooked the murky river and a table almost big enough for 1 person. The view was kind of neat for someone who maybe hasn't seen the boats on the river and all that stuff. The food wasn't great especially for the price, but are server was great & very attentive. I wouldn't go back. Was not impressed."

  • "S&W has a great tradition and we've been to the NYC location many times. The ambience in this location is better. Service was good but this time our food preparation was less than their standard. The Gorgonzola crusted filet was piled high with goo (not crusted) and the entire bottom of my steak was burnt hard. Even so, we had a great evening and will be back."

  • "I had the opportunity to attend Smith & Wollensky during a pleasure travel to Chigago with my wife and another couple. While first seated at the terrace the noise of near constructions was enough to ask for a different indors table. When relocated many children yelling at the table next to ours, so at this point was not so good... after that service improved our experience and definitely the food was as good as I had been told... I will certainly recommend this place if you really enjoy fine cusine. Ambience on the other hand I like more business, formal places. Have said this, a Little overpriced."

  • "We had a party of 5 and were celebrating 3 birthdays. Although the dining room was a little tight, (we sat in the Grill) we would still go back. The view of the river was beautiful. We all had steaks, which were prepared perfectly. Our server was really busy, but still did an excellent job and was very knowledgeable. The baked potatoes and the potato hash sides were excellent."

  • "The steaks and sides here were fantastic; definitely some of the best in Chicago. A couple of things that were frustrating about my experience were the level of service and the requests that were unfulfilled. When I made the reservation, I specifically asked for patio seating as well as called ahead and they said they would seat me outside, although it might be a few minutes when I arrive. Well we were seated in the back of the restaurant INSIDE, and I asked if we could sit outside at some of the open tables and they said they were already reserved. Not the best way to start off my dining experience. The server we had was busy with too many other tables and took 15 minutes to get our drink orders."

  • "Sat outside along the river...the food, service and atmosphere were fantastic. They let us dine at a casual pace and we were able to watch the sun set it was fantastic...HIGHLY RECOMMEND"

  • "We ate outside on the top level amid the noise of construction and traffic. The magnificent views of Chicago by the river were unfortunately marred by several cranes and S&W's awnings. Probably unavoidable in this city considering the unpredictable nature of the weather, but the signature attraction of the restaurant was severely limited by the sight lines. Food was excellent and most of the service was impeccable and personable. The one criticism I have is that all or nearly all of the appetizers were seafood based and our dinner guest did not like seafood."

  • "Food was average they need more non steak options (fish and chicken) yeah I know it is a steak house. The waiter was fantastic!"
