There are a few things I absolutely hate. loud dinning experience Sitting next to strangers Sitting in a tent. I asked for a table with a view. I arrived 30 minutes prior to reservation. was seated in a cold dark tend outside. table on either side of me was aprox 6 inches away tired of this type of seating arrangement want a private conversation+ do not want to bump elbows w/couple dinning next to me food was good Bone in filet+ filet Oscar cook to our liking Truffle mac/cheese tasted a little like a fridge maybe premade? I had it there before was excellent, this time not good Roasted root veg in duck fat were dry Needed a glass of H2o to eat lot of time in between the salad w/no drinks or dinner almost thought they forgot about food

  • Fillet mignon at poive
    OpenTable Diner Since 2012
    Dined on 10/18/2014
The fillet was tender and melted in my mouth. It had amazing flavor but I chose to have it prepared "au poive". I have had this before but never at this restaurant. The amount of pepper on it was way too much and I had to scrape it off. The manager was very kind and offered a new steak to be prepared; I did not want to waste the beautiful piece of fillet mignonette that was already cooked to perfection. He gave me a new plate and brought gravy to the table without pepper in it and resolved the situation completely. It was wonderful. I will definitely be returning to this restaurant for another amazing meal.

We are a bit spoiled with so many great steak places in Chicago, and S&W is as good as any of them. We always have great food, service, and wine when we dine here. It's fair to say that we have never had a bad meal here. Try the filet mignon with one of their special sauces or go for the large ribeye. The salads and side dishes are excellent and are all sized to share. Lots of good wine choices, though some are a bit pricey (steakhouses really mark up the juice). Go...enjoy!

We both had the Filet Minion. They were tender, and cooked perfectly. We were able to order half size side dishes and finished everything. The service was perfect. Never had to wait for someone to refill our water or remove an empty plate. Their method of bringing food out on a cart was entertaining. We will return for another special occasion, as the price was high, which was fine for this place. The piano playing lady was good, adding nice background music.

My husband and I dine out on the weekends and I'm normally very pleased with the food and the service we receive. Unfortunately, I cant say the same for this place. We visited Chicago for the weekend with friends and came across this restaurant while walking around downtown. We requested an outside table on our reservation so we could see the river but they put us inside at a table closely placed between 2 other tables and it was very uncomfortable. We finally got moved after I commented to the Host that we really were not happy sitting inside, which I did appreciate. However, the rest of the night we received poor service, our food took forever to come out to a point were we were ready to leave and then our dishes ended up being cold.

From the moment we sat down, the service deteriorated. Don't even know the servers name, as he never introduced himself. He was sweating profusely as you could see beads of sweat dripping off his face! Messed our drink order up completely... When he finally did come around to serve the drinks, he had to ask who had what drink! Ordered ceasar salad with dressing on the side & messed that up as I had to tell the runner to take back. Dinner was served & he didn't even come around to offer us another cocktail! Lastly, came around for dessert menus & two people out of our party of six were in the restroom, but the server comes around to take our dessert order! Never came back to take our other guests' order! Dropped off check! Never going back!

Horrible service. Our waitress was visibly annoyed that we stayed as long as we did, she hardly came around. When it came time for the staff to rap up out leftovers, the man didn't speak English and it was so hard to explain what food I wanted rapped up. Today I went to go heat up the steaks and he sent home with me everything on everyone's plate including baked potatoes that were eaten to the core. Imagine my surprise when I opened the food to find everyone's left overs with mine. This was a waste of money so glad we had good company of friends from out of town and a great view outside.

Visiting S&W recently, we found the dinner was ok,service was very good, the steaks had no seasoning unlike other Chicago steakhouses S&W are minimalist with seasoning, I ordered the bone-in filet (medium) it arrived medium outside and pretty much raw inside. The manager came over to offer to make it right and ended up treating us to dessert on the house. nice touch. All in all there ARE better steaks in Chicago. also, there is nothing cheap about S&W $$$. I've paid less $$ and had better steak elsewhere.

Initially, my husbands steak was not up to his liking. There was a large amount of gristle and fat. At first the servers tried to convince us that it was because of the bone in filet, but honestly, we've had enough steaks to know that there was an over abundance. The manager came over and without question replaced the steak, with almost no delay, and the replacement meat was amazing. No problems what so ever, and my husband was in heaven. The fact that the problem was fixed, with little issue made the night stress free and my husband had a wonderful birthday dinner! : )

We were in Chicago for the IMTS show and have always wanted to try Smith & Wollensky's due to recommendations from friends and locals. My wife and I were celebrating our 35th wedding anniversary and wanted a special dinner. We had a reservation and were seated right away; the decor and service was very good, we choose the Porterhouse for 2 due to it being our anniversary and sharing seems nice. The steak was prepared medium rare as requested. The steak was fully of grissel and difficult to cut never mind eat. One of the worst steak's I have ever been served. We are small town folks and have never sent a meal back and did not this time either but wish I had as it put a damper on the experience and a special evening for us.

I recommended this restaurant to our group having dined there before and being totally satisfied. During that visit we were seated on the main level that had an excellent view and great ambiance. This time however we were led to a lower level that was essentially a basement that had low ceilings and very little ambiance because of the noise. They were extremely busy and probably only use this area for overflow but when spending $2000 on a meal you expect better than a basement. I would only return knowing that I would be on the main level.

There was nothing particularly noteworthy about the food. Our bone-in rib-eye was, for the price tag, just OK. We also had asked for river view seating well when we reserved a table a week in advance, and instead got seated in a busy part of the bar area. The overall experience was just average for such a well-known, and relatively expensive steakhouse. I would not go back, given all the other great choices in the Chicago loop area.

I have been to this restaurant several times and have always had an excellent experience. This time, I'm honestly not sure it was the same restaurant. I had family in from out of town. We asked for a great table (they were not busy) and we got a view of river construction. After ordering our appetizers, our waitress disappeared. By the time we ordered our 1st course, it was 45 minutes later. Starving, we finally get our food. 3 out of the 5 steaks were not cooked properly and the meat was tough and fatty. The salmon was so salty, my cousin's child couldn't eat it.The waitress barely checked in and we had to beg for the check. Their remedy? A big piece of chocolate cake. We just dropped a few hundred dollars. Really?
