Diner Reviews
  • "Fantastic Restaurant, Had the Cajun Bone In Ribeye and the flavor just popped out of the steak. Was cooked to a perfect medium rare"

  • "No shortage of fine steak houses in Chicago. S & W steps up their well reputed dining experience with professional and charming servers. It makes a world of difference. Gerald was articulate, charming, and passionate. The location on the Chicago River is both romantic, and scenic. There is no kids menu and half pound burgers were offered. No worries, the exciting chatter in the air drowned out any traces of children. Location definitely sets them apart. We will keep coming back as long as we can afford it. No worries!"

  • "The service from start to finish was excellent. The food was first class: my steak & her tuna were perfection. a great post-theater experiance."

  • "The food and the service at Smith and Wollensky were both very good. My husband and I split a caesar salad and the featured surf and turf which was a 10 oz filet and a lobster tail. It was more than enough food for the two of us, and the waiter split the portions for us. We ordered the steak medium-rare, and it came out medium, but it was still good. The lobster was delicious. The view was ok, but our table was not as close to the water as we would have liked. There was a very loud group sitting next to us for most of the night, so it made talking difficult. The service was good, and the wait staff was attentive. I will probably try a different steak restaurant the next time we visit Chicago."

  • "It was a bit noisy this visit, the doors were open to the veranda and construction went on all during lunch on the riverwalk. My mistake, had I realized it I would have asked to be seated on the lower level"

  • "The food and service were only average. The serving sizes were more than sufficient. Even the creme brûlée was great, it did not make up for the meal."

  • "I was offered a dessert so no complaints. I did t want one and that was it. I go to nice restaurants every week and was a bit taken back. Not to my expectation."

  • "I had the opportunity to attend Smith & Wollensky during a pleasure travel to Chigago with my wife and another couple. While first seated at the terrace the noise of near constructions was enough to ask for a different indors table. When relocated many children yelling at the table next to ours, so at this point was not so good... after that service improved our experience and definitely the food was as good as I had been told... I will certainly recommend this place if you really enjoy fine cusine. Ambience on the other hand I like more business, formal places. Have said this, a Little overpriced."

  • "Best steak, Caesar salad and service in Chicago. We don't go to Chicago without at least one stop for dinner at S&W."

  • "Got to the restaurant at 6:00 and ordered our drinks, appetizer, etc within the first five minutes. Drinks and appetizer came very quickly, and the salad arrived while we were just finishing our appetizer, but then.......... we waited and waited and waited and 45 minutes later we told our waiter that we had theater tickets and needed our food! He said he had checked earlier, but really we were having a steak and some crab cakes, not like that takes time to cook. We finally got our dinner and hour and a half after we sat down! The manager took the price of 2 glasses of wine off the tab, but still we should have had our dinner within an hour of sitting down."

  • "We really like S&W - as a brand, and as a place for consistently good steak. That said, our experience this weekend wasn't outstanding. The restaurant was not crowded - we were given our requested table by a window overlooking the river - but the "feel" and ambience of the house just lacked the energy we expected. A good steakhouse feels warm, a little boozy, a little jazzy - and S&W last Saturday felt a little cold and tired. Beyond the decor and physical ambience issues, the servers seemed a little disconnected and a couple were even bickering with each other. There are so many places now serving good steak, it feels a little like the management team could take a hard look at the atmosphere and experience being created at S&W Chicago."

  • "The menu offers a limited venue of steaks. Although the steaks offered were all outstanding. There were three of us dining and everything was great. A little pricey but you expect that from great restaurants. We were not rushed and service was also outstanding."

  • "Waiter got order wrong. I ordered the bone-in filet, medium. Bone-in rib eye came, sent it back. Bone in filet came out about 5 min later, medium RARE. Husband ordered N.Y. Strip, medium. His steak was more on the medium-well to well done stage. I am sure his sat under lights while they cooked the filet."

  • "S&W has good reviews online & was actually recommended by a friend. I was not a fan & this is why, there is some steak club thing going on here. When we walked in from the street & gave the host on the main level our name. He directed us downstairs to the "grill" which would be fine if the dining experience wasn't really different. I could tell that sitting on the main floor was NOT an option for us. We got a window table that overlooked the murky river and a table almost big enough for 1 person. The view was kind of neat for someone who maybe hasn't seen the boats on the river and all that stuff. The food wasn't great especially for the price, but are server was great & very attentive. I wouldn't go back. Was not impressed."

  • "S&W has a great tradition and we've been to the NYC location many times. The ambience in this location is better. Service was good but this time our food preparation was less than their standard. The Gorgonzola crusted filet was piled high with goo (not crusted) and the entire bottom of my steak was burnt hard. Even so, we had a great evening and will be back."

  • "We had a party of 5 and were celebrating 3 birthdays. Although the dining room was a little tight, (we sat in the Grill) we would still go back. The view of the river was beautiful. We all had steaks, which were prepared perfectly. Our server was really busy, but still did an excellent job and was very knowledgeable. The baked potatoes and the potato hash sides were excellent."

  • "The steaks and sides here were fantastic; definitely some of the best in Chicago. A couple of things that were frustrating about my experience were the level of service and the requests that were unfulfilled. When I made the reservation, I specifically asked for patio seating as well as called ahead and they said they would seat me outside, although it might be a few minutes when I arrive. Well we were seated in the back of the restaurant INSIDE, and I asked if we could sit outside at some of the open tables and they said they were already reserved. Not the best way to start off my dining experience. The server we had was busy with too many other tables and took 15 minutes to get our drink orders."

  • "Food was average they need more non steak options (fish and chicken) yeah I know it is a steak house. The waiter was fantastic!"
    Dined on 6/12/2014
  • "We ate outside on the top level amid the noise of construction and traffic. The magnificent views of Chicago by the river were unfortunately marred by several cranes and S&W's awnings. Probably unavoidable in this city considering the unpredictable nature of the weather, but the signature attraction of the restaurant was severely limited by the sight lines. Food was excellent and most of the service was impeccable and personable. The one criticism I have is that all or nearly all of the appetizers were seafood based and our dinner guest did not like seafood."

  • "Sat outside along the river...the food, service and atmosphere were fantastic. They let us dine at a casual pace and we were able to watch the sun set it was fantastic...HIGHLY RECOMMEND"

  • "I can not go to Chicago without eating at Smith and Wollensky. This time my spouse, adult daughter, and I enjoyed a lovely lunch outside. Despite the construction noise from the river walk project, we had a delightful time. They were very accommodating when we asked to change our table from inside to outside, the servers and staff were friendly and helpful (notably Pete and James), and our food was exactly as we ordered. The Smith and Wollensky salad topped with TWO perfect salmon filets may be my favorite salad anywhere. We LOVE this place."

  • "The steaks as usual are amazing. I had the Rib eye and am still dreaming about it. Took 1/2 of it home and had it for lunch yesterday and it was just as good. They are known for their split pea soup and as usual it was fabulous! My client had the filet and also was impressed. Nice wine, nice ambiance, great service. Right on the river for location and a true Chicago feel. One of my favorites."

  • "S & W is a great steakhouse in an awesome location on the Chicago River. The steaks are excellent as are the salads and side dishes. Most of the side orders can be shared by 3-4 people. The wine list is very solid with a nice range of varietals and price points. The service is friendly, helpful, and professional. Sit outside if weather permits. We love this place!"

  • "Dined here for a business dinner June 2014. Salad & mushrooms were good, hash browns very good. Steak arrived over cooked, promptly replaced. Replacement steak was properly cooked but lacked flavor. Dessert was very good. Extensive wine list. Service was excellent. Restaurant enjoys stunning views of Chicago River with floor to ceiling windows."

  • "The food was everything you could expect and more! Certainly a top-notch steakhouse. However considering the price we were paying, the wine we were ordering and the size of our party the service was certainly lacking. We also had a service issue at the one in Las Vegas. Certainly not up to the standards we would expect from such a fine restaurant, However food is so good we might have to give it one more shot, side dishes a bit underwhelming as well."

  • "iAds a reservation in the morning and even called to make sure that we were sitting outside. We had the worst possible table directly beside the bus cart. After complaining twice we were finally moved inside. "

  • "The service was not adequate. The steak is not tender etc. "

  • "If it weren't for our server, this review might sound a lot worse! The food wasn't that spectacular but the outdoor patio makes it worthwhile. Service amazing!"

  • "The experience was a pleasant one although the food was a little disappointing. I ordered filet medium well and my guest ordered filet well done and we had a challenge deciding which was which (ie mine was a little over cooked). I did not want to mention this as I did not want to have to wait fro repair and disrupt the evening. However service good and ambience very good. Thanks"

  • "This review is coming from someone who eats out all the time. Smith & Wollensky to me is a chain like Capital Grille, Ruth Chris, etc. I don't have high expectations. However, it is not a cheap chain and I do expect some level of service. First statement from server, "Do you see anything you want?" What happened to, "Is this your first time? Are you celebrating a special occasion? These are our specials..recommendations? What if I said No. The food was decent, but given that the bill was $300 for 2 people (and I still tip very nicely), I would expect better service. There are plenty of restaurants downtown where I can spend $300 and get exceptional service. They clearly get away with the mediocre service because of the location. "

  • "They are known for their steaks and this time we tried the seafood boutique to share. It was good but nothing spectacular. Wish we would've order the steaks. If you want seafood there, the crab legs are good size."

  • "Best seat in the house. Don't know how we got so lucky, but it's right on the river with a fantastic view. Steaks were good; didn't try any seafood. Order the Truffled Mac n Cheese!"

  • "This is a classic for outdoor dining in the city. Can't beat the view. The food, overall, is good, not great. Loved the Lobster app and the Ceasar Salad. My Halibut came out extremely overcooked...even burnt and dry. I sent it back and the next one was okay. I was just full by that time."

  • "We had a wonderful dinner here to celebrate an 80th birthday and two graduations. Everything was top notch from the minute we walked in the door. Food was outstanding, service was outstanding and we all left happy. What more could you ask for?"

  • "I have been several times before but this one was a mess. It took hours to get our food and when it arrived my stake was stone cold and my wife's, overdone; our guests were polite enough not to critizise. Then the waiter disappeared several times before dessert, before coffee and before the check. I am sure this was a random event and I will come back but S&W should not tolerate this. "
