A word from Smith & Wollensky Boston – Back Bay
Eat like royalty in Boston’s most famous castle.

Indulge your senses and sense of history with the unique dining experience of our Boston steakhouse. Located in a historic stone and brick “castle” built in 1891, the structure originally served as the headquarters for the First Corps of Cadets and is listed on the National Historic Register. The first floor gunroom, social hall, and museum floor have been converted to the main dining room. The castle also boasts an impressive collection of private dining rooms, and the fourth floor Battle Room is one of Boston’s most coveted locations for large parties.

  • "The food was excellent. They have the best signature steak and creamy mashed potatoes. The waiter was very attentive and knowledgable The other memorable part was the complimentary dessert that they gave us. It was the largest most delicious chocolate slice of cake with whipped cream and strawberries. It could have fed 4 people. Everything they did made the occasion even more special"

  • "The staff was friendly and attentive. But the management should invest in some new jackets for the waiters, very rag tag."

  • "It is in a castle. In Boston, A CASTLE! Great history, ask to sit in the arsenal room off the main room in the rear. You can tour the castle which served as a Armory during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The woodwork and the restoration is amazing. The murals on the upper floor are timeless. We have been regulars in the NY Restaurant for years and were amazed with hte history of this location. Food was, as expected, superb. Ask for Amy to serve you."

  • "I've dined at the Smith & Wollensky (S & W) - Back Bay location only a handful of times. There's something about S &W that invites me to try a different cut of steak each visit. At most other steak houses, I usually stick with the filet mignon. It was my plan to order the rack of lamb, which I've had in the past, but it is no longer on the menu. Instead I ordered the bone-in ribeye and it did not disappoint. It was my cousin's first time at a Smith & Wollensky and she enjoyed every aspect of her dining experience."

  • "The whole scenario from food to service was certainly very good, my only negative notes would be that the room seemed a little cold, and I am not referring to the temperature, and the prices a tad ambitious."

  • "Steaks were good ..but have had better.waiter very attentive but because he coming to table a little often we were interupted way too often. Salad was requested with dressing on side wedge cane with heao of blue cheese dressing..gad to send back..there was no pepper in pepper mill had to look to get somw pepper...salmon good not very moist though and gava beans and stuff it was served on wasnt tasty enough to eat...blueberry tart..very good but don't bother with banana choc. Dessert..very dry..not good...they were very nice however and sent us glasses of champagne bcause they knew it was our anniversary...everybody was very nice..unfortunately food wasn't great..just ok"

  • "The atmosphere is wonderful in this old fort that's now used as a restaurant Good steak, as you'd expect from S&W. Be sure to ask for Sean as your waiter. He's awesome! He took really good care of our family of 4. Ask him about wine -- he's extremely knowledgeable."

  • "We have been to Smith and Wollensky, at the Castle in Boston many times. And we keep coming back because of the excellence of the food and service. We had Travers whom we've had in the past and continue to enjoy! He is quite engaging and made our meal even more enjoyable. I would highly recommend Smith and Wollensky!"

  • "I took my wife for her birthday dinner to the Smith & Wollensky on Arlington Street. The experience was wonderful from the host greeting my wife with happy birthday wishes to our wonderful server being extremely attentive. We both ordered steaks and they were prepared exactly to our specifications. Dessert was a mountain of chocolate cake that fed us both for several nights after at home. All in all, if you are looking to dine on the highest quality steak in a relaxed and caring atmosphere, Smith & Wollensky should be your destination."

  • "The building is beautiful. The ambiance is nice. The steaks we had: one was of poor meat quality and my wife's was literally uneatable."

  • "Fancy steak chain, but raised to the next level due to the castle setting. Interesting place to dine. The food is always good, I prefer S&W to the Palm, etc, but is on par with Morton's or Capital Grille. Martinis, wine, desserts good as well. A great place to gather for something in the mid-range special occasion category (old team mates, old friends, old college buddies, etc). "

  • "Smith and Wollensky Back Bay was Great in everyday! I have dined at countless high end restaurants all over the US and confidently put this experience in my top favorites. Not only was the food prepared to perfection, our waiter Travis made the experience ten times better. One of the best/most knowledgable servers I have had yet. "

  • "I would highly recommend this Smith and Wollensky for special occasions. The "palace" is beautiful and the waiter give you a history of the place before taking your order. It is crazy expensive, but the portions are huge and the steaks are fabulous. "

  • "We went for dinner to celebrate my college graduation. They were incredibly accommodating, as our reservation number kept changing. The service was wonderful and they made sure everything was to our liking, and even gave me a congratulations card signed by all the waiters! You really do get what you pay for, as this is not an inexpensive place. But highly recommended for those extremely rare go-all-out events."

  • "The dining experience at Smith and Wollensky was excellent. Our server Sean was very professional, knowledgeable, and delivered a memorable experience to celebrate my husband’s birthday. Sean has a great personality and made our dining experience fun and enjoyable for a large party of 10 people. The food and ambiance was wonderful and we look forward to coming back to celebrate the next special occasion. Best regards, Lisa"

  • "This was my first time at Smith & Wollensky. Our waiter was attentive and knowledgeable about the drinks and the food. He answered all of our questions about the different kinds of steak and delivered our orders in a timely manner. The space itself is incredible--the original armory of the Volunteer Corps of Boston. The manager offered me a private tour to the upper levels of the Castle, showing me antique books, weapons, uniforms, and flags. The architecture alone was stunning. The seafood appetizers were delicious--we had tuna carpaccio, oysters, and a crab cake. Our filets and sirloins were cooked to perfection, and the side of french fries was delicious, sporting big salt crystals. Perfect for a special occasion! Thank you!"

  • "Everyone in our party had some kind of steak and they were all delicious. We also shared a garden salad and a wedge which were good as well. Onion rings were very plain with no taste. would not recommend them but the potato pancake was delicious so would recommend that as a side. It was pretty slow there, thought the wait staff could have a little more personality because our waiter had none. Also went missing and none came back to see if we needed anything. He forgot my beverage and we had to ask him to bring it. He did take it off the bill for us though. Other than that it was good."

  • "S & W may not want this to be known but it is a great place for a vegetarian. The sides are excellent but the waiter offered a vegetarian entre choice that was not on the menu. This was no toss-off entre to be able to say they accommodated me. It was a beautifully presented fully developed tasty entre full of flavor. The service was outstanding and cordial. "

  • "Had heard fantastic things about the wait staff and how they can really add to your experience by talking about the buildings history etc. Not only did our server NOT do that, he also forgot to place the order for my daughters meal-and it was her graduation. The manager tried to make up for it with dessert, but that didnt go smoothly either. Sadly not worth the price tag. "

  • "We were a party of eight celebrating a group achievement so we pushed the boat out and we were not disappointed. The waiter was fantastic, patient while we dithered over our ride and guided us through the wine list. His recommendations were spot on. The food when it arrived was fantastic. Thanks for a wonderful evening."

  • "Went for dinner on Sunday 5/4 to celebrate wedding anniversary. First visit to the Castle and it was a great night. Started with a complimentary champagne toast. Nice fresh bread came next, then both had classic wedge salad which was outstanding. For main course, I had Filet Au Poivre with baked stuffed shrimp. Steak was very good, as was rub and sauce. Shrimp was overcooked, which was only disappointment. Wife had Filet Au Poivre with side of baked potato and sauteed mushrooms. Sides were excellent. Our waiter, Travers, was outstanding. He was attentive and informative but not overbearing. Overall very pleased with entire experience. Manager brought over a card signed by the staff which was a very nice touch."

  • "While we loved our server and food in January, the management failure of that visit continued into our Attempt for Redemption visit.. The gift card the GM issued was never even funded with the anticipation of an actual returning patron. The manager and then the general manager both tried and failed to redeem the card, also lost our discount survey receipt(usually kept for records??), and made us wait 30+ minutes to settle the tab. They were just flailing.. we pray the Waterfront location is more competent. A third try won't happen, too many other steakhouses to visit in Beantown.... As far as the service was concerned, menus, and bread took way too long. Twas not a busy night there... our wait times were ridiculous. "

  • "The waiter recommend a porterhouse for my date and I, and he then came back five minutes later saying he came back and said they only had five porterhouses and sold them all already – It was 6 PM on the Saturday night of marathon weekend (were they not expecting and porterhouse lovers?). I told the waiter we were going to a show and had to be on our way by 7:30. We never saw our waiter after 7:10. After stopping two bus boys, the manger brought me the check after 7:40. After signing the check we ran to the theater and after getting through the lobby the doors to the auditorium were closed in our face. Paid $450 for the tickets and missed the first song."

  • "The Filet Mignon was the best I have ever had... The only draw back was a lack of explanation on the only special they had. We specifically asked if there were any specials and we were told no. My wife and I noticed a chalkboard with a special after we ordered and when we asked about it we were told it was too late to change but that they did have a special! It was disconcerting but did not detract from an overall excellent dining experience ."

  • "We were in from Buffalo for a conference . We found it online and walked . The bldg is an old castle and was amazing . Food was to die for and service was top notch! My favorite part was we were told that we were free to explore around all several floors after dinner . Meeting rooms and banq rooms were all on floors 2 - 4. Lit fires roared in the fire places , Amazing antiques And architecture abound .The tables were all set . Its a one if a kind find and a must see and do while in Boston ! We oh the " gigantic chocolate cake" for the table .its enough for 5 people easily!! Do yourself a favor and go to dinner at Smith and Wollensky !!!"

  • "I have to admit I was disappointed. I had read such great reviews, and I wonder if the Boston Marathon crowds were a bit overwhelming for the staff. 1. Our reservations were lost, but eventually we were seated. 2. Service was slow, and our waiter rarely checked in with us. 3. Requests for more wine, more butter, were never fulfilled."

  • "We went to the restaurant on Easter Sunday. The staff on the entrance was negotiating that I made a mistake on reservation because I did not add the kids. Then when we entered the restaurant was semi-empty. The calamari we ordered as appetizer was very salty, neither me nor the kids ate it. My steak was very fatty that I had to take Tums the rest of the day. The staff was not friendly, and I never seen a smile - as if they are just doing their job on a day that they don't want to come. At the end, the manager gave the kids very cheap egg shells with chocolate inside that peeled before we even reached the car."

  • "Of course the steaks and service were wonderful; that's what one would expect. But the unexpected happened from the moment we walked into the intimate and lovely bar/dining area, and our drinks arrived. The Carpano Antica sweet vermouth transformed a great manhattan into the sublime category. Compliments were sent to the chef for the salad dressing, of all things. And the seafood was perfectly done. The waiter took excellent care of us and made sure we were out of the restaurant for our curtain time at a nearby theatre, a fact we had mentioned in the Open Table reservation form which had been transmitted seamlessly to the wait staff. Thanks for an experience that felt very special. "
