A word from Smith & Wollensky Boston – Back Bay
Eat like royalty in Boston’s most famous castle.

Indulge your senses and sense of history with the unique dining experience of our Boston steakhouse. Located in a historic stone and brick “castle” built in 1891, the structure originally served as the headquarters for the First Corps of Cadets and is listed on the National Historic Register. The first floor gunroom, social hall, and museum floor have been converted to the main dining room. The castle also boasts an impressive collection of private dining rooms, and the fourth floor Battle Room is one of Boston’s most coveted locations for large parties.

  • "It was our 19th wedding anniversary which I noted in our reservation for Dine-Out week in Boston. Our waiter immediately acknowledged this occasion with a flutes of champagne and a Happy Anniversary card signed by all the staff! What a wonderful touch! Food was very good, perfectly prepared and delicious. Trying out an upscale restaurant during Dine-Out week is a great way to experience a new restaurant at a fantastic price. We would go back even without the Dine-out prices now."

  • "The steak was just not great and this is supposed to be a steakhouse. The sauce (au poivre) was also not great. My wife had the crab cakes which were not cooked well, as they were very mushy on the inside. All in all not a place to come back to"

  • "This was my first time at the castle and I was slightly disappointed. The place was great and the service ok but the food what not as good as i was expecting. It was like they forgot to add seasoning to the food. I never add salt but I need to salt my stead and mac and cheese as they were both bland. I'm not sure if this is a reflection on how the treat "restaurant week" customers but I wasn't impressed. It makes me not want to revisit this location. I have been to another Boston location with much better food and service that wasn't so forced and memorized."

  • "This was my first experience at Smith & Wollensky. It was a special occasion and it was lovely and delicious. It is pricey, but quality is their top priority. Lovely evening!"

  • "Nice ambience but outside more impressive than inside. Food good but pricy."

  • "it was a special occasion for my Daughter-in law as she just completed her two year graduate study @ UMass Boston. the staff obliged by allowing us to be seated in the Ancient library room, When asked were she wanted to dine she requested the CASTLE . We were unable to do the self-tour , as we had arrived too late. All of our dinners and desserts were excellent."

  • "Located in an actual pre-revolutionary Castle , Smith & Wolenskys lived up to royalty in every way. While the seafood tower was a little low for the price ($65), the beefsteak tomato salad, the hashbrown potatoes, the fresh corn, and particularly the incredible bone-in ribeye steaks more than compensated. Service was fit for a King! Topping the night off was the tour of the upper floors by the Manager, which is a history lesson in and of itself. Truly a regal night!!"

  • "We went to an early dinner in order to get to another amazing Boston mainstay, "Shear Madness" (longest running and hilarious play in American Theater at 33 years and counting) to celebrate my brother's birthday. The historic renovation of the castle and immediately available background sheet made it like eating in a beautiful and inviting museum. As a steakhouse the food was delectable (chicken only got okay reading from my husband). Waiter was a tad too self important, but did not detract much from the otherwise lovely and generally worthwhile costly experience. Great for special events."

  • "S&W in NYC has been on my list for a while. When I found out we were going to be in Boston, I thought I'd see if they had a sister location. Turns out, they have two. Of course, I chose the castle location, and thankfully it was closest to our Copley Place hotel. They have several signature steaks on the menu. I chose the coffee & cocoa rubbed filet. It did not disappoint. Terrific crust. It was a little more medium well than medium, but it didn't hurt the flavor. The Hubs had the long bone rib eye. This is an expensive steak and while the parts he ate were good, it was extremely fatty and much of the steak was wasted. He should have sent it back, but it was my birthday & he didn't want to cause a fuss. Truffled mac & cheese was good."

  • "One of the best meals I've ever had. The dry aged long bone rib eye is an experience to say the least. Interior decor is a visual feast. Staff was extremely well versed in all aspects of the menu as well as the history of the building. Also very cordial and attentative. Look forward to going back next time I'm in town."

  • "Had a great time here with my girlfriend. The steak was good, but nothing to write home about. Service wasn't the best, but it wasn't bad. When you go to a restaurant of this caliber you expect the waiter to listen to your order and not write it down. Our waiter was a veteran and he wrote it down. Our dinners were delivered in reverse (I got my girlfriend's dinner), but it wasn't a big deal to switch plates. Also, our water glasses took a very long time to be refilled and we had to ask the manager who was walking around. Just small things that make you feel like your not at a place of high-quality service. Overall, I would say go for the experience but do not expect something that will blow you away."

  • "On arrival we were greeted by a bar server, he took our drink and appetizer order. 30 min later the appetizer came. He apologized as their kitchen was busy. That's fine. Once we finished in the bar we asked twice when we would be seated in the restaurant. In the dining area staff were repeatedly dropping dishes etc. We & other guests commented how odd that was. We ordered dinner/wine and when it came the steaks were ok but the shrimp was way overdone. The server fumbled around serving our sides spoon by spoon. I had to tell him to stop. Wine was not what we ordered. Asked for the rest of the bottle to go and server said they were out of to go bags but gave us a paper bag stapled at the top. Not quite the experience we expected or paid for."

  • "Steakhouse so expensive...but expect my food to be out of this world for the prices. Food was good but not exceptional...many better steakhouses."

  • "Way too expensive for food that was not all that extraordinary. Two in our party of four ordered steaks and both said that the meat was over cooked."

  • "The food was excellent. They have the best signature steak and creamy mashed potatoes. The waiter was very attentive and knowledgable The other memorable part was the complimentary dessert that they gave us. It was the largest most delicious chocolate slice of cake with whipped cream and strawberries. It could have fed 4 people. Everything they did made the occasion even more special"

  • "It is in a castle. In Boston, A CASTLE! Great history, ask to sit in the arsenal room off the main room in the rear. You can tour the castle which served as a Armory during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The woodwork and the restoration is amazing. The murals on the upper floor are timeless. We have been regulars in the NY Restaurant for years and were amazed with hte history of this location. Food was, as expected, superb. Ask for Amy to serve you."

  • "I've dined at the Smith & Wollensky (S & W) - Back Bay location only a handful of times. There's something about S &W that invites me to try a different cut of steak each visit. At most other steak houses, I usually stick with the filet mignon. It was my plan to order the rack of lamb, which I've had in the past, but it is no longer on the menu. Instead I ordered the bone-in ribeye and it did not disappoint. It was my cousin's first time at a Smith & Wollensky and she enjoyed every aspect of her dining experience."

  • "The whole scenario from food to service was certainly very good, my only negative notes would be that the room seemed a little cold, and I am not referring to the temperature, and the prices a tad ambitious."

  • "The atmosphere is wonderful in this old fort that's now used as a restaurant Good steak, as you'd expect from S&W. Be sure to ask for Sean as your waiter. He's awesome! He took really good care of our family of 4. Ask him about wine -- he's extremely knowledgeable."

  • "I took my wife for her birthday dinner to the Smith & Wollensky on Arlington Street. The experience was wonderful from the host greeting my wife with happy birthday wishes to our wonderful server being extremely attentive. We both ordered steaks and they were prepared exactly to our specifications. Dessert was a mountain of chocolate cake that fed us both for several nights after at home. All in all, if you are looking to dine on the highest quality steak in a relaxed and caring atmosphere, Smith & Wollensky should be your destination."

  • "Smith and Wollensky Back Bay was Great in everyday! I have dined at countless high end restaurants all over the US and confidently put this experience in my top favorites. Not only was the food prepared to perfection, our waiter Travis made the experience ten times better. One of the best/most knowledgable servers I have had yet. "

  • "This was my first time at Smith & Wollensky. Our waiter was attentive and knowledgeable about the drinks and the food. He answered all of our questions about the different kinds of steak and delivered our orders in a timely manner. The space itself is incredible--the original armory of the Volunteer Corps of Boston. The manager offered me a private tour to the upper levels of the Castle, showing me antique books, weapons, uniforms, and flags. The architecture alone was stunning. The seafood appetizers were delicious--we had tuna carpaccio, oysters, and a crab cake. Our filets and sirloins were cooked to perfection, and the side of french fries was delicious, sporting big salt crystals. Perfect for a special occasion! Thank you!"

  • "Everyone in our party had some kind of steak and they were all delicious. We also shared a garden salad and a wedge which were good as well. Onion rings were very plain with no taste. would not recommend them but the potato pancake was delicious so would recommend that as a side. It was pretty slow there, thought the wait staff could have a little more personality because our waiter had none. Also went missing and none came back to see if we needed anything. He forgot my beverage and we had to ask him to bring it. He did take it off the bill for us though. Other than that it was good."

  • "We were a party of eight celebrating a group achievement so we pushed the boat out and we were not disappointed. The waiter was fantastic, patient while we dithered over our ride and guided us through the wine list. His recommendations were spot on. The food when it arrived was fantastic. Thanks for a wonderful evening."

Sean has a great personality and made our dining experience fun and enjoyable for a large party of 10 people. The food and ambiance was wonderful and we look forward to coming back to celebrate the next special occasion. Best regards, Lisa"

  • "I would highly recommend this Smith and Wollensky for special occasions. The "palace" is beautiful and the waiter give you a history of the place before taking your order. It is crazy expensive, but the portions are huge and the steaks are fabulous. "

  • "We went for dinner to celebrate my college graduation. They were incredibly accommodating, as our reservation number kept changing. The service was wonderful and they made sure everything was to our liking, and even gave me a congratulations card signed by all the waiters! You really do get what you pay for, as this is not an inexpensive place. But highly recommended for those extremely rare go-all-out events."
