A word from Smith & Wollensky Boston – Back Bay
Eat like royalty in Boston’s most famous castle.

Indulge your senses and sense of history with the unique dining experience of our Boston steakhouse. Located in a historic stone and brick “castle” built in 1891, the structure originally served as the headquarters for the First Corps of Cadets and is listed on the National Historic Register. The first floor gunroom, social hall, and museum floor have been converted to the main dining room. The castle also boasts an impressive collection of private dining rooms, and the fourth floor Battle Room is one of Boston’s most coveted locations for large parties.

Diner Reviews
  • "We went to the restaurant on Easter Sunday. The staff on the entrance was negotiating that I made a mistake on reservation because I did not add the kids. Then when we entered the restaurant was semi-empty. The calamari we ordered as appetizer was very salty, neither me nor the kids ate it. My steak was very fatty that I had to take Tums the rest of the day. The staff was not friendly, and I never seen a smile - as if they are just doing their job on a day that they don't want to come. At the end, the manager gave the kids very cheap egg shells with chocolate inside that peeled before we even reached the car."

  • "Of course the steaks and service were wonderful; that's what one would expect. But the unexpected happened from the moment we walked into the intimate and lovely bar/dining area, and our drinks arrived. The Carpano Antica sweet vermouth transformed a great manhattan into the sublime category. Compliments were sent to the chef for the salad dressing, of all things. And the seafood was perfectly done. The waiter took excellent care of us and made sure we were out of the restaurant for our curtain time at a nearby theatre, a fact we had mentioned in the Open Table reservation form which had been transmitted seamlessly to the wait staff. Thanks for an experience that felt very special. "

  • "Terrific experience as always. Whenever we go we ask to have Michael, the head bartender be both our bartender and server. He is amazing."

  • "My boyfriend and I celebrated my birthday here. When booking the table I told them it will be my birthday. The staff was extremely nice and took great care of us throughout the dining experience. I would recommend this for anyone celebrating a special occasion or looking for a nice place with amazing food for a romantic dinner for two. Couldn't be happier with this restaurant!"

  • "Bait and switch deal having to order sides sullied the experience."

  • "Went for our anniversary dinner and was treated to a hand signed card by all the staff and champagne to celebrate. A very nice special touch I wasnt expecting. Great steaks and a good bourbon list. I will be going again for sure."

  • "We dined at Smith & Wollensky Boston - Back Bay during Dine Out Boston. The service was great - everyone was friendly, from the host to the servers. The food was excellent - steaks were perfectly done and the sides were delicious. Sides really are portioned for sharing - especially the potatoes (we were shocked and amused by the size of the potato brought to the table)! The atmosphere was quiet and conducive to conversation, and the waiter came by frequently enough to check in without being overbearing. All four of us enjoyed our evening at Smith & Wollensky and plan on returning in the future. If you've never been to this restaurant, give it a try - you won't be disappointed!"

  • "Went to S&W on Arlington st - Boston and was overly impressed with the bar staff. Mike and Luis were very friendly and made some great drinks. They educated us on the craft beers and turned us on some to new cocktails. The food was excellent and the service was quick and precise."

  • "We went for restaurant week so I cannot review the entire menu, but I'll definitely be going back to try again. The reason this review is 4/5 is because medium rare felt more like medium."

  • "It was nice dining in this large castle. The steak was above average. The service was ok, nothing to complain about, but there is room for improvement there. The waiter looked like she wasn't enjoying her work."

  • "Simply amazing food! The steak was just perfection and so delicious. Also the service was awesome. They were very attentive and knowledgable about the food and the building history."

  • "The food was delicious and the restaurant week deal/menu was awesome! However, it took a very long time to get our check at the end. Other than that, no complaints at all. Would definitely recommend for the delicious steak and awesome location - very unique!"

  • "Restaurant Week menu was not great and no difference in price between the regular menu. Steaks, though tender, needs more flavor and mushrooms were overcooked. House wines are somewhat overpriced. Having tried many steakhouses in Boston, I am not impress by this one."

  • "Took my 90 year old grandparents there for dinner. Everything was tremendous - service, food, ambiance. They especially enjoyed the location, historical building, and it wasn't too loud for them to have lively conversation. I highly recommend Smith and Wollenky's; I think it would be appropriate for almost any occasion - bday, date, romantic etc...."

  • "We went to celebrate our engagement and had the best time in the bar area - excellent wine/drink recommendations, delicious oysters and everything Michael recommended was outstanding. We originally planned to sit in the dining room but had so much fun in the bar area that we snagged a table by the fireplace ate until we were stuffed. Everything was outstanding. The only reason I am not giving 5 stars is that we were 45 min early for our reservation and the restaurant was 1/4 full, we were directed to the bar (where we ended up staying as we loved the bartenders so much) but were never offered our table until we asked an hour later. Poor on the front of the house front."

  • "We went for restaurant week, but there is no doubt we will return as regular customers. Beyond the delicious, well-seasoned, fresh food (get any steak!) and beyond the excellent wine list and cocktail menu, was the service. Our waiter made our experience exceptional! He explained the menu to us, made us feel comfortable and we didn't feel silly asking any questions. He's recommendations were spot on, it was as if he knew exactly what we liked! My boyfriend didn't like the first cocktail he chose, the server immediately recommeded something new and had it made for him. The reommendation suited my boyfriend very well, I was impressed. We did go fairly early, around 5:30pm on a Thursday."

  • "It was both my fiance and I's first time here and it blew my mind away. The service was great. Everywhere you look there is someone always around to clear your plates, refill water/sparkling water in your cups, just everything. Our waiter was wonderful and went over the menu with us. I decided to do restaurant week and everything came out perfect. I had salad, oscar steak which was very delicious, and chocolate cake. My fiance ordered the coffee & cocoa steak and he enjoyed it very much. It was very flavorful. We also ordered the mac & cheese as a side and this is something everyone must try! It was sooooo good!!! I was very impress and I think we will come back in the near future."

  • "Charles was our waiter. I don't think I have meet anyone in my entire life that was so good at their job simply because they love what they do. Thank you to him and the staff for making it a special night for me and my girls friends . Tickled silly Lisa :)"

  • "We went for the special due to restaurant week. We ordered from that menu plus some extras like the mashed potatoes and asparagus. The dining room is so impressive and the service was excellent. The food was outstanding as well."

  • "The restaurant was not what I expected. The idea of dining in a castle seemed so exciting however upon arrival, the staff was not friendly. I expected the servers to be welcoming and they were just the opposite.I felt like I was in a factory as so many different servers waited on us and not one of them were accountable. They were not friendly, had an attitude and made no effort in their delivery. The $38 salmon was farm raised which was a surprise. I would have expected this quality of restaurant to have wild salmon. Despite the farmed salmon, the food was really good, however due to the poor service and dated ambiance I would not return."

  • "We were a party of 6. 4 out of the 6 people received steaks that were over cooked. One people in our party received a totally different steak than what they ordered. The filet was not a good quality filet- possibly because it was restaurant week. It certainly wasn't as good as it normally is at this establishment. I will not be back."

  • "We got there early for our reservation so we went to the bar and had the pleasure of being taken care of by Mike who personally transformed our 'let's try (another Boston) steakhouse dinner for two' into a lifelong memorable experience. He sat us at the table in front of the fireplace, then suggested everything from our wine selections to the best possible dinner choices anyone could make, although I think you'd be hard-pressed to find a bad choice on this menu. If I do one thing the next time I go to Boston, it will be to go back to Smith & Wollensky and hope that Mike is working. We had Wollensky salad, the best crabcake I've ever had (no cake, it's all crab), prime ribs w/hash browns, mushrooms, & a never ending chocolate cake. Amazing!!!"

  • "My fiance and I like to try new restaurants in Boston a couple times a month. We look up the top restaurants in the area and then make our reservation. The steak was not what we expected. For 60$ a steak we thought it would have had a much better flavor. Compared to other steak houses we have been to we thought Smith & Wollensky was not up to par. We will not be going back there again."

  • "Dined here before, happy to see that the food and service were just as good mid-week as on the weekend. The servers are always good to split the generous portions so that you can enjoy an appetizer, salad and dessert with your entree and their fine wine list. We ate in the main room this time. The bar was quiet until group of 20 men arrived, but even then wasn't too noisy for diners. When we dine with family we especially enjoy the outstanding seafood platter appetizer. The seafood is beautifully presented, fresh, with a price more than fair for the portion size and selection."

  • "omg, please do not dine here. Overpriced, and over rated! Do yourself a favor, and dine @ The Capitol Grille. A true steak house. Our entire meal here was a disaster! We have made better steaks at home, and our sides at home were better as well. We entered an empty restaurant, and now we know why!!!!!!!!"

  • "I thought the food was great, prepared with care and interesting. I loved the skinny martini. The service was a little scattered but acceptable if not exceptional. The seating was comfortable; however, smaller room was a little too industrial"

  • "We had an international group of 9 for dinner. Table was ready, service was spot on, and the food was delicious. The waiter did a great job in guiding us to the right amount of sides, etc."

  • "I loved everything about this place. As someone who loves historic architecture and buildings, I loved that they kept the place very original and preserved a bit of our local history. The food was incredible and had quality wine to go with it. Highly recommend dining here for special occasions!"

  • "You cant go wrong at the S&W. Food was amazing, service is always impeccable and the building has so much character its wonderful to have a restaurant there."
    Dined on 3/15/2014
  • "We love the ambience of the "castle" where the restaurant is located, and enjoy exploring the upstairs rooms with guests. The dinner portions are huge -- think about splitting salads, for example -- and a pre-dinner manhattan would have put me under the table had I finished it. Dinners are expensive here -- our steak entrees were each more than $50 -- but the food was delicious, including the sides (again, the single order of hash brown potatoes could easily feed four)."

  • "Lovely dining experience and the steak was fantastic. Our server brought a giant complimentary piece of chocolate cake out for my birthday and had great recommendations. They really know how to make you feel special there."

  • "I don't mind paying extra for my meal if the food is great. Two out of three of my Trio Filet were fabulous, however, that is only a 66%. The service was wonderful. Too pricey for the taste. I'll continue to go to Ruth's Chris."
    Dined on 3/8/2014
  • "Can't say enough about the experience, great food, great service, the building itself is remarkable and they let you walk through all the floors to look at all of the history. I will definitely be dining here again."
