They acknowledged my son's birthday with a card on the table and a greeting from our waiter followed by an enormous serving of cake for dessert. The food and service were, as usual, superb. One could say there are too many steak places in Boston but for us, Smith & Wollensky is the most approachable of all and consistently delivers an outstanding experience. We made a mistake in booking because when we changed our Open Table reservation from 6 to 7 diners, it actually changed the date of availability and we did not notice it. So, we showed up a day early! I don't recommend this but when we showed up and they indicated that they expected us the next day, I was pleased that S&W accommodated us and we were seated right away. It wasn't the best seating (by the wait staff registers) but at least we had a place. We had to compete for our wait staff's attention some but all in all it didn't ruin the evening. The appetizers were really good as were the salads. We went for my sons college graduation. Everything was outstanding, the steaks were great, the service was very professional and proficient. I am looking forward to coming back. Everyone enjoyed their drinks and food, especially the steaks, which is why you come here to begin with. We even had one person who says he doesn't usually eat mashed potatoes that enjoyed them there (I wasn't a huge fan of the mac and cheese side, but everyone else loved it). The only knock was that they seemed to take some time in taking our main order, which didn't happen until after we had finished our appetizers. This restaurant is a standout. We brought our family to celebrate a special event this past weekend and were impressed by the attentiveness of staff and quality of food. Edgar attended to all our needs with grace and thoroughness. Victoria, our former server, even checked on our comfort. The food was cooked to perfection from the calamari and onion rings appetizers, to the various versions of filet mignon and huge rib eye, to the seven layer chocolate cake! We enjoyed a variety of sides that are good enough to stand alone. The staff, the food, the water view all make Smith & Wollensky a perfect choice for a meal fit to share with the people that are most important to you.5/18/2013 12:00:00 AMOf steak houses, the BestDecor is masculine, but here you don't feel hammered by it -- no stuffed buffalo heads staring from the walls, and there are even large floral arrangements tastefully placed. Also a distinction is the noise level: although there was a healthy amount of ambient conversation/bar noise, we were never interrupted or distracted. But what is really unique is the service: waiters are attentive, welcoming, completely versed on every facet of the menu, able to explain the ingredients, preparation and meaning of every menu item, and they seem to have memorized the wine list. The waiters are helpful without being obsequious, give good advice, and make you feel comfortable. Unfortunately one of my party's swordfish was overcooked and dry so had to be replaced, which messed up the meal timing, etc, but they fixed it efficiently and mgr came over also which was a nice touch. Other than that, the food was great quality. It was a Saturday night and by close to ten pm, and the place had emptied, so a fairly quiet atmosphere if you hang around chatting, but that's standard for this town. Definitely will be back there, still a great evening, and also as its close to work and the cocktails at the Intercontinental. This is a more expensive than your average restaurant for sure but it is in line with the better steak houses. Really is a special treat to eat here but don't save it for just special occasions!If you get chocolate cake for dessert, order 1 for the table. Our server was Mike, server #5. The reason I can easily recall his name and even number is due to the outstanding service. Suggestions, depth of knowledge concerning every aspect of the menu as well as memorization of the wine and scotch menu, he was personable when spoken to yet never intruded. And he kept an astute eye on the table without making his presence known, perfect timing for everything from water refills to the check. We were delivered to our table by the very friendly maitre d, who carried our drinks, to a well set yet simple table. First course appetizer fantastic - tuna on Himalayan salt block - tuna was fresh and delicious, veg garnish a light and tasty accompaniment. S & W Salad was light and full of flavor. Steaks...oh the steaks..melt in your mouth, full, oaky, juicy and cooked absolutely perfectly. Dessert, which was on the house for a birthday, was the biggest piece of choc cake I've every seen - Delish. The service was unparalleled - attentive without being over bearing.
