A word from Small Plates
Welcome to Small Plates. Now celebrating our 10th Anniversary, Small Plates has been providing Detroit and her visitors a dining experience unlike any other in the city. Under new ownership, Small Plates will continue to serve an unparalleled level of diverse dining adventures, while maintaining the identity of our loyal patrons and this great city.

In Greece they have Mezze. In Spain they call it Tapas. In China they have Dim Sum. Italy has Antipasti. And in America, we have Small Plates- a uniquely communal dining experience where the only thing more stimulating than the culinary collision of flavors in our signature dishes is the company of those around you. Unbound by the limitations of regional flavor or color, Small Plates offers the palette a selection of cuisine as diverse as the city itself. Small Plates is a place for friends, a place for family, a place for Detroit.

  • "First time the food was good for the price not good"

  • "Sadly, we arrived for our reservation and was seated, but it took over thirty minutes before our order was taken. It was as though we did not matter as guests. Then, our food arrived separately, so my guest was eating before I so her food would not get cold. We felt as though we were thrown away. We have been eating at small plates before coming from the YMCA during the day and evenings, and the service/food was never like this."

  • "The food was amazing! Excellent service and recommendations! The Sangria was amazing!"

  • "This was my second time at Small Plates and I love the atmosphere and the sharing of food. It is very enjoyable sharing several different plates with the rest of the party. I can't wait to come back next time! Definitely my go to place in Detroit!"

  • "Kid-friendly because the tables have butcher paper and they offer crayons if a child is with you. Not that it's really necessary; the food comes out shortly after you order it. The pizza takes a bit longer to make but the end result is well worth the wait. Their sweet potato fries are amazing. I cannot tell how loud this restaurant usually is because it was Opening Day for Comerica Park when we went, but when we were there it was filled with people wearing Detroit Tigers memorabilia and a live DJ had good music blasting. While I enjoyed dancing along, several of my friends didn't enjoy having to shout over the music to hear eachother. Overall I did enjoy it."

  • "On weekend evenings, when there are events at the Opera House or Fox, make a reservation, walk ins will have a long wait on prime nights. When there are no events in the theather district or at the sports arenas, you have the place pretty much to yourself. Great for a light meal before an event, many selections to choose from, even when you do not want to share your dish. Experiment for food and wine paring, pan seared scallops and their oaky Chardonay match very nicely, this particular evening. Ask to limit seasaoning."

  • "If you ever go to the Detroit Opera House, please stop at Small Plates. It's a good place for quick and good food."

  • "Our reservation was for 6 p.m. upon arrival we were seated promptly. I wasn't happy about the location of our seats right at the door, but it was theater night and there was a crowd. We were waited on by a very courteous young woman. We both chose salmon and it was great. It was really great perfect, not too dry and very flavorful. We ordered fried green tomatoes, I was disappointed in those the coating was crispier than I cared for and they weren't as flavorful as home grown. Our deserts were great both the brownie and the apple dish with ice cream went down very well. My overall experience was wonderful, I think I've found a new spot for a nice meal when going to the opera house."

  • "What a fun restaurant. Smaller servings meant to share. Everything from salmon to coneys. The mac & cheese is to die for. Everything we tried was delicious. Service was pretty good. Prices were reasonable. We shared 4 items, each had a drink (2 proseccos and a white sangria, and 3 desserts. Our bill, each, split 3 ways with tip was 36.00. As full as we were 1 dessert would have been plenty."

  • "We were looking for some place different to eat before the wings game and decided on SmallPlates after some googling. There were 4 of us and we walked away happy. The service was quick, food came out fast and hot and very tasty."

  • "I have been a customer for at least five years including the facility in Royal Oak. No wonder that facility failed. When I entered the restaurant I was told to select a table and sit down. 20 minutes after the "waiter", some guy named Indigo, tossed down the menus upside down, he returned to take our order. After another 20 minutes he brought my guest's salad. In about another 20 minutes, he brought me my crispy spring rolls, stone cold. It continued that way until we left including 40 minutes for an ice tea refill. I won't even get into the "deconstructed caesar salad'. Yuck !!! I could not wait to get out of the place, and I would go to Denny's before I would ever return."

  • "You need a reservation, no matter what. We watched at least 2 dozen people walk in and walk out. The food and service were very good. It is a small space, and a little cramped. The price in relation to the portion size is a litte on the high side. And Interesting find."

  • "We had a great experience at Small Plates, great food and service."

  • "A great place to try different selections of foods. We had numerous small plates that were all good and the White Cheese pizza was awesome."

  • "Delicious food, but portions were much larger than I remembered, so we ordered too much food. Great waiter, but way too noisy. We had to shout to be heard."

  • "My boyfriend and I went to eat here before going to the Detroit Film Theater for a show. We took our time and perused the menu ordering things as we went. The whole experience was pretty great. The service was really good. The front of house manager noticed that my order of cornbread was taking too long and went back and brought it out herself. It showed initiative I generally don't see anymore. All the food was good but I can not stress enough my highest recommendation to get the chicken and waffles. I thought how do you get chicken and waffles onto a small plate? Well they do it perfectly. Delicious waffles are sandwiched around perfectly breaded and cooked chicken and crisp bacon and drenched in syrup. Totally Awesome!! Must have!"

  • "The restaurant had a very pleasant atmosphere and a great selection of tapas items. Also a very nice craft beer menu. The waitress was very helpful with suggestions for both the food and beer. My 14 year old niece loved her chicken and waffles and Sweet Potato fries. I loved the fish tacos. I would recommend Small Plates to anyone visiting Downtown Detroit."

  • "I had a reservation on Valentine's Day. My waitress was AWESOME! Very fast, attentive and kind. The food was delicious as usual, props to the chef. Such a great gem for downtown Detroit. Thank you, Small Plates!!"

  • "Service was great. Overall the food was outstanging, the tenderloin in the bruschetta was a bit overdone & maybe on the dry side. Otherwise could not find anything to complain about. Everything else we had was excellent, and look forward to coming back again."

  • "Overall, this place was a nice spot in Detroit. The food overall was decent - the fries and fried green tomatoes were very tasty, but the fish tacos and lotus tuna were a bit bland (need salt?). The ambiance was great - funky and hip, the service was very good. Dessert was excellent - a made to order peach cobbler. I was unimpressed by the cocktail list so opted for wine, which was good. I think the logo makes it look a lot more like a diner than it is - it's a neat place, but not amazing. I think i would go back if in Detroit to try some other menu items. It was a lot of food for the price so value was great."

  • "OK for a light dinner before a ply etc. I thought the small plate could have been more interesting but everything was good. They got us out on time. Not a place for a leasurely quiet dinner."

  • "We love this restaurant. Fun atmosphere, amazing food and great location if you are attending an event downtown. Wish we could get her more often-we love everything about this place!"

  • "Food was very good, our waitress was great. Would definitely go back."

  • "We ate here before a show at the Detroit Opera House. The four of us enjoyed the smaller portions and sharing of the dishes. We sampled a variety of the menu. All the dishes were visually delightful. The dragon shrimp was spicy, the pork sliders were delicious with a touch of coleslaw, the portabella mushrooms were tasty. All our 9 dishes tasted flavorful and appetizing. The wine list is limited and could be improved with a better selection of more mature red wine. Liked its contemporary ambience. Would recommend it to friends."

  • "WE enjoyed our window table and first course caesar salad. The pizza was not our favorite..would rather a thin crust, lighter version. Not up to our previous expectations. Our server was attentive, but got the drinks wrong (bar tender came over to straighten out0 and doubled our second drink order...do not like upselling. We will go back and pick and choose more carefully and stay on top of the server a bit better."

  • "I was pleasantly surprised that this is not the original Small Plates and that it is now under new management. The atmosphere was very good and menu was revised. If your looking for a good place for tapas I would recommend Small Plates."

  • "Great food ,tried several different plates and enjoyed them all."

  • "... but it was so cold in there it felt like their furnace was broken. Granted, it was very cold and windy that day, but still. The food was good, but it seemed like even the plates were cold and food went to lukewarm quickly. It's too bad, because it has a nice menu, and our server was good. I suppose I'll try again on warmer weather."

  • "We have dined her several times. The good is very good and many items to choose from. We love ordering things to share. A great place to eat when downtown since it is so close to the People mover stop. The only concern was the food was not very hot when served. Will definitely return again."

  • "They got rid of their brunch on Sundays. Only reason we went. They don't even have the make your own Bloody Mary bar anymore. Used to be our favorite brunch/breakfast spot."

  • "Some plates were wonderful and others were forgetable. Stay away from Waffles and Chickendish - very dry and salty."

  • "We stopped in after a show opening at the Detroit Artists Market where there was wine and munchies, but not really dinner. We had a pretty diverse group so it was really nice to have the food diversity that Small Plates offers. We had the chicken waffles and little fillets which were both terrific. It was not crowded so we talked to the bartender Indigo about local distilleries, including the one we are working on up in Hazel Park. It was a very pleasant ending to a pleasant evening."

  • "Great food. Love the fact that you can order and share a variety of delicious food. Loved the lotus, lamb chops, beef bruschetta, and sweet potato fries. Definitely going back to try a different selection. But we will order the lotus again, that plate so far was our favorite."

  • "Came over after the Alumni game at Comerica park on NYE and was a perfect setting to warm up and have a tasty and diverse meal after the game. Service was extremely quick and they moved food out to all the tables very efficiently. Food was excellent - the tenderloin bruschetta was delicious in particular. The special mulled wine and apple jack drinks to help warm up were appreciated!"

  • "Though the menu looked very interesting, the quality of the food did not live up to it. Soup and hot chocolate were barely hot, and virtually everything ordered was a major disappointment. Won't go back again."

  • "Honestly after going to small plates it has become my favorite resturant I want to go back almost daily just to try all the different foods which are perfectly portioned. The prices are perfect for how much food you get and I love it there."
