Welcome to Small Plates. Now celebrating our 10th Anniversary, Small Plates has been providing Detroit and her visitors a dining experience unlike any other in the city. Under new ownership, Small Plates will continue to serve an unparalleled level of diverse dining adventures, while maintaining the identity of our loyal patrons and this great city.

In Greece they have Mezze. In Spain they call it Tapas. In China they have Dim Sum. Italy has Antipasti. And in America, we have Small Plates- a uniquely communal dining experience where the only thing more stimulating than the culinary collision of flavors in our signature dishes is the company of those around you. Unbound by the limitations of regional flavor or color, Small Plates offers the palette a selection of cuisine as diverse as the city itself. My daughter and I love to attend events in downtown Detroit. We both have always enjoyed Small Plates. However, the last two visits have been not favorable. The service was slow, however, the waitress was very helpful to the children. It just seems that they have lost their touch. Pasta was over cooked, scallops were small. I was disappointed the first time we weren't happy. However, we gave it another shot, and I don't think we will try again. WE will look for dining at a different location just up the street.

Went here before a concert and it was delicious! The idea of sharing different items is great. We are appetizer people and being able to sample a lot of different things instead of one huge meal is very appealing to us. We loved the different combos of flavors and textures.

I had planned a special lunch for my daughter that day to try Small Plates, specifically. It was our mother/daughter day. To our dismay, we had made a reservation well in advance. I even changed the time on the day of the reservation. Not once was I ever contacted that the restaurant was closed for a private party that day. We arrived well before our time, and saw the sign on the door, and waitstaff setting the tables up. I would've loved to have tried the food, but I'll hesitate on going back any time soon.

Great place to eat before a game. You can have as much or as little as you want with a good variety to choose from. Servers are always friendly and helpful in making selections. Best small plate is the tenderloin bruschetta.

Our first trip here will not be our last! We ate here before a concert, sat at the outdoor tables. The server was very friendly, and knowledgeable about the menu. The food was really good, our favorite was the Chicken Tostadas. The fish tacos were also really good. Even thought this is a tapas-style place, the portion sizes on the "small plates" is generous. It's always fun to sit outside, but one downside here is that 3-4 homeless people came into the outdoor area asking for money during our meal. We would go back here, but would think twice about sitting outside because of that.

This was my first time to Detroit. My research on food turned up this place. We were very happy with it. Started with the Dragon Shrimp and Lotus Flower Tuna. The shrimp were wonderful. The highlight of the meal. The tuna was very good. We then ordered a couple more plates... the Mack and Cheese and the Fried Green Tomatoes. The Mack and Cheese was excellent. The shape noodle they used held the cheese sauce perfectly. The tomatoes were a bit disappointing. They'd clearly been breaded some time ago and the breading was too think anyway. The tomatoes were too thin and not very juicy. I'd say skip that dish. The service was great and the ambience was great. Looked like a fun bar, too. Overall, a really good find.

Wanted to dine close to the Detroit Opera House after a matinee performance. Small Plates is not only close to the Opera House, but it would have been worth driving to, because the menu is perfect for sharing with friends while discussing the musical we all watched that afternoon. We enjoyed the performance but the food took center stage. Great variety, and professional, friendly service. Another memorable day in Detroit.

This was our first experience dining at Small Plates. I have heard excellent comments about the restaurant and thought we could try it after the show. I was not disappointed. The idea of sharing your entrees with your group is outstanding we got to try various menu items and found a few that we absolutely loved. Recommend that you make reservations I speak from experience because I have tried to dine there two times previously with no success. Thus I used Open Table to make reservations for this occasion and it proved successful and was easy to make them from my pc.

I have to start out by saying the management of this restaurant apparently doesn't care about its patrons. There is a tiny restroom for Men, and when I visited the one and only toilet was "Out of Order"! What? Are there no plumbers in Detroit? Putting that aside, the food was mixed -- the tuna was great, the fries were soggy and very very salty, the Asian salad was disappointing, and other small plates were mixed. There are many other good dining options downtown. I doubt I'd go back.

Small Plates' location and menu are appealing, but after two recent visits we probably won't be back for a while. The food is very good, though perhaps a bit overpriced. The main problems: 1) For me the place is much too crowded and loud, and I'm not a fan of the the dark blue walls and strangely cold graffiti-style art. 2) I know with a "tapas" concept that the food may not arrive all at once, but at other tapas places the dishes come out maybe five or ten minutes apart, not fifteen to twenty minutes. If you're sharing orders here, you get a couple of bites and then a long wait. If not sharing, it means one person gets their food long before the others and must decide whether to eat or wait politely while their dish gets cod.

A lovely summer Sunday afternoon experience was delicious and memorable. We were given a choice of an inside or outside table and were seated right away at a table outside where we could watch the passing scene of a diverse group of people taking a Sunday walk or coming into town for either the Tigers game or the play at the Opera House, both a short walk away. Both the brunch and regular menus were available and we chose items from both. The "small" plates were generous in size, beautifully presented, and delicious. We especially enjoyed the Asian salad (light and cooling) and fish tacos. There were many other options representing many corners of the world that we could have easily selected. Our server was friendly and well-informed.

I should have listened to the other reviewers who ranted about the poor service, but I SO wanted to find a great tapas restaurant! We had a reservation & were seated promptly but, after about 15 minutes, we had to flag someone down to even bring us our first round of water. And then we waited. Each time we hailed someone for service (because THAT was the only way to receive service), they would go off into the twilight zone and we would wait. I certainly could have understood if they were short-staffed and I'd seen the waitstaff was running around, but everyone I saw was "moseying" about & making too many trips with empty hands. To top it off, the food was mediocre: we tried 8 different dishes + 2 desserts and departed underwhelmed.

We came to Small Plates before a matinee performance at The Detroit Opera House, which is right across the street and as usual everything was great, expect the pretzel bun on my slider was charcoal burnt. I did not mention this due to our time restrictions. I am sure it would have been replaced. I was disappointed that no one in the kitchen or our waitress say it before serving. The other two on our plate were not burnt. We will return though next time we go to The Opera House.

Pacing was perfect. Service was OK. We ended up with a bit too much food, but it was nice to sample 5 dishes from their varied menu. If you are thinking tapas, this is not your spot. It does have bar food (wings, tacos) prepared with a somewhat better-than-usual eye for taste, ingredients. The Deconstructed Caesar salad is a great idea and tastes great if you skip the extra dollops of creamy dressing. The various Buffalo things on the menu (wings, calamari) should be avoided -- overcooked, tasteless except for the vinegar and, once again, the extra dollops of sauce. Beyond that, the ribs and tacos are goopy but good. And then there's a lot of fried stuff with, you guessed it, extra dollops of sauce. The low service rating is because I waited at the front for 10 minutes before the greeter showed up. And then waited another 10 minutes at the table for the server.

We love this downtown restaurant. The menu is unique and never fails to deliver. We are always satisfied with our meal. The noise level is fairly high though, so don't come for an intimate conversation. The portions are quite large for "small" plates. My husband and I usually pick three items and it is more than enough.
