A word from Small Plates
Welcome to Small Plates. Now celebrating our 10th Anniversary, Small Plates has been providing Detroit and her visitors a dining experience unlike any other in the city. Under new ownership, Small Plates will continue to serve an unparalleled level of diverse dining adventures, while maintaining the identity of our loyal patrons and this great city.

In Greece they have Mezze. In Spain they call it Tapas. In China they have Dim Sum. Italy has Antipasti. And in America, we have Small Plates- a uniquely communal dining experience where the only thing more stimulating than the culinary collision of flavors in our signature dishes is the company of those around you. Unbound by the limitations of regional flavor or color, Small Plates offers the palette a selection of cuisine as diverse as the city itself. Small Plates is a place for friends, a place for family, a place for Detroit.

Diner Reviews
  • "We really enjoyed all of the dishes we ordered! Fried Green Tomatoes, Sun dried tomato crustini, calamari were all excellent. Server was knowledgable and advised us accurately of the spice level of all of the dishes."

  • "Good food, okay wait staff but inside was very noisy and it was hard to converse with a table mate. I would have enjoyed sitting outside more to escape the noise level inside. The seating proximity of the tables next to us was extremely close."

  • "Small Plates' location and menu are appealing, but after two recent visits we probably won't be back for a while. The food is very good, though perhaps a bit overpriced. The main problems: 1) For me the place is much too crowded and loud, and I'm not a fan of the the dark blue walls and strangely cold graffiti-style art. 2) I know with a "tapas" concept that the food may not arrive all at once, but at other tapas places the dishes come out maybe five or ten minutes apart, not fifteen to twenty minutes. If you're sharing orders here, you get a couple of bites and then a long wait. If not sharing, it means one person gets their food long before the others and must decide whether to eat or wait politely while their dish gets cod."

  • "A lovely summer Sunday afternoon experience was delicious and memorable. We were given a choice of an inside or outside table and were seated right away at a table outside where we could watch the passing scene of a diverse group of people taking a Sunday walk or coming into town for either the Tigers game or the play at the Opera House, both a short walk away. Both the brunch and regular menus were available and we chose items from both. The "small" plates were generous in size, beautifully presented, and delicious. We especially enjoyed the Asian salad (light and cooling) and fish tacos. There were many other options representing many corners of the world that we could have easily selected. Our server was friendly and well-informed."

  • "We came with another couple before a Tiger game. It was perfect as we ordered 6 different plates and could share a variety. All were very good but our absolute favorite was the beef tenderloin bruschetta! It was jam packed but didn't take too long for food to arrive. Very friendly waitstaff."

  • "I should have listened to the other reviewers who ranted about the poor service, but I SO wanted to find a great tapas restaurant! We had a reservation & were seated promptly but, after about 15 minutes, we had to flag someone down to even bring us our first round of water. And then we waited. Each time we hailed someone for service (because THAT was the only way to receive service), they would go off into the twilight zone and we would wait. I certainly could have understood if they were short-staffed and I'd seen the waitstaff was running around, but everyone I saw was "moseying" about & making too many trips with empty hands. To top it off, the food was mediocre: we tried 8 different dishes + 2 desserts and departed underwhelmed."

  • "Enjoyed pre theatre...service was not consistent...food was very good, hard to hear conversation at table of 4. But I would definitely go back if I was going to Opera House again."

  • "We came to Small Plates before a matinee performance at The Detroit Opera House, which is right across the street and as usual everything was great, expect the pretzel bun on my slider was charcoal burnt. I did not mention this due to our time restrictions. I am sure it would have been replaced. I was disappointed that no one in the kitchen or our waitress say it before serving. The other two on our plate were not burnt. We will return though next time we go to The Opera House."

  • "Amazing food! Get the Caesar salad, corn bread, fish tacos, and chicken sliders. Service could be faster on the drinks but it was permissible given that Detroit is burgeoning."
    Dined on 6/28/2014
  • "We enjoyed our experience however, we were unsure of what to order. My portion of fish tacos was adequate with half a salad, but the order of lettuce wraps was scimpy."

  • "Great find, right across the street from the Detroit Opera House. Great atmosphere. Also just a a different way to eat dinner. Small plates, you get to sample several different food choices. A fun place to eat before going to the see The Wizard of Oz at the Opera house."

  • "My wife and I love Small Plates. This evening we brought a guest with us whom had never been before. He couldn't stop talking about his experience. The Dragon Shrimp is one of our favorites, as is the Chicken Lettuce wraps for my wife, and the ribs for me. Again, simply wonderful."

  • "Had dinner prior to seeing "Wizard of Oz" at the Detroit Opera House across the street from Small Plates. Ordered 5 dishes for 3 people. Food was great! Presentation was beautiful. Pacing was perfect. Service was OK. We ended up with a bit too much food, but it was nice to sample 5 dishes from their varied menu. Not expensive for for the quality and quantity of food in my opinion. Would certainly dine with them again."

  • "Enjoyed Small Plates with my wife and friends for my friends birthday. Great food and atmosphere. Service was good and we were out in time for our concert (Lionel Richie at DTE Music Theater!)"

  • "We went in a group of four and ordered a bunch of different things. EVERYTHING was delicious. The drinks were great too! They were VERY busy so the waiter couldn't be super attentive, but we still were by no means ignored. Would highly recommend!"

  • "If you are thinking tapas, this is not your spot. It does have bar food (wings, tacos) prepared with a somewhat better-than-usual eye for taste, ingredients. The Deconstructed Caesar salad is a great idea and tastes great if you skip the extra dollops of creamy dressing. The various Buffalo things on the menu (wings, calamari) should be avoided -- overcooked, tasteless except for the vinegar and, once again, the extra dollops of sauce. Beyond that, the ribs and tacos are goopy but good. And then there's a lot of fried stuff with, you guessed it, extra dollops of sauce. The low service rating is because I waited at the front for 10 minutes before the greeter showed up. And then waited another 10 minutes at the table for the server."

  • "We love this downtown restaurant. The menu is unique and never fails to deliver. We are always satisfied with our meal. The noise level is fairly high though, so don't come for an intimate conversation. The portions are quite large for "small" plates. My husband and I usually pick three items and it is more than enough."

  • "Haven't been in a number of years my wife and myself decided to have supper before attending our concert. Still a wonderful place, food was excellent, service excellent, a great way to start our evening. TX's Small Plates"

  • "Lotus flower tuna is awesome! Chicken tostados awful tasted like bad frozen food - 3 out of 4 ordered this too! None of us liked the dish at all. "

  • "Stopped in for a meal before catching a show at the Detroit Opera House as a matter of convenience since it is...across the street! Blown away by the tapas style/small plates concept. Each plate that came out was both beautiful and delicious. With a mixed group, it affords the opportunity for everyone to have their own favourite. The service was top notch and friendly without being overbearing. This is my number one pick to grab a bite before a Tiger game (Comerica is around the corner), a show at the Fox, Filmore, Gem or Detroit Opera House (all within a block) or just if you are down town. Can not recommend this place any higher! You gotta eat here!"

  • "My daughter and I happened across Small Plates while visiting Detroit. It was the highlight of our dining experiences during the week long visit. Inventive food combinations, excellent presentation, very friendly and helpful service, and a nice ambience. The sizing of the portions made it easy to share with enough to go around but not so much that we couldn't try multiple offerings. "

  • "We went here for my daughter's graduation dinner, right before the graduation - which was across the street in the Detroit Opera House. Service was prompt, suggestions very helpful, and dinner was delicious. We have one vegetarian, one very picky eater, and two lactose intolerant people, and there was something for everyone. I hadn't even left, and was making plans to come back!"

  • "We had dinner at Small Plates before our twin sons graduation ceremony across the street from the Detroit Opera House. The waitress was knowledgeable about the menu and pointed out the items that were either gluten free and dairy free or could be modified. Food was excellent. We truly enjoyed ourselves. "

  • "Great spot to have dinner before a performance at Detroit Opera Theater. They are quick and good. Really enjoyed our experience with friends before Turandot."

  • "We found the food to be adequate, not outstanding. Very small venue and you sit close to your neighbor. Good for a drop in spot to catch something before an event or for a drink. Service was slow to start but then the waitress was very helpful. "

  • "I love this little spot in the heart of Detroit. We were going to a concert at the Masonic. There were 4 of us and we got plenty to eat. The only odd thing was that the dessert seemed to take forever. Everything else was pretty quick. It makes for a nice casual dining experience. Sometime I want to go when I don't have another obligation after. "

  • "Read of you restaurant in the Hour magazine. I have been there four times now over the last year. Twice we have brought another couple. Your food is excellent. Service could be more attentive, not meaning that it was slow. Give me a offer to return. "

  • "Loved the food selection and tapas style sharing. Would definitely visit again. Easy to walk to the Fox after dinner."

  • "The decor was nice and the waitress/hostess was kind and professional. However, the food was simply inedible. Nothing we ordered was good--from the bruschetta, the fried green tomatoes, to the sliders. The iced tea was over brewed but OK. "

  • "This place was outstanding. There was a bit of a wait for our table but with how busy they were that is understandable. "

  • "What a lucky find!! Walking distance close to many downtown venues...Comerica, the Fox Theatre, Detroit opera house etc. Many interesting and delicious items on the menu and as the name suggests "small" servings so you can sample a bunch. The seared tuna Lotus flowers and the seared scallops with roast fingerling potatoes were particularly good. Will definitely return to sample more items on the menu. "

  • "It is appreciated that there are 14 (of 38) vegetarian items on the menu. Honestly, only 3 of those are non-appetizers (1 slider and 2 pizzas). The other items are soup, fried things (I love fried food), Mac and Four Cheese Gratin without any vegetables, and salads. Look at all of the entree type items for fish and meat dishes. They are immensely creative and usually served with significant amounts of yummy vegetables. Your vegetarian diner would also appreciate a plate with a combination of items and vegetables. Look at all of the colors and textures on the Lotus Flower Tuna plate or the Baja Style Fish tacos. It would be relatively simple to create similarly exquisite vegetarian/vegan options. We love good food, too. "
