Diner Reviews
  • "I've become a regular, visiting at hours for brunch, lunch, and dinner, always able to find something on the menu to soothe the ache of hunger. The portions are of adequate size, presented in appetizing display. The waiters and owners hover, concerned for you rather than trying to run up the tab. Fresh bread and rolls, and ah, the Saturday night short ribs, which do not require a knife. Sly's is what happens when a well-studied chef gets to prepare the dishes he likes."

  • "Dinner at Sly's was delicious. My wife and I went there last year for the first time and the repeat trip was just as satisfying. The steaks were cooked perfect and melted in our mouths. The side dishes like the creamed spinach was excellent. My wife had the lamb which was quite tasty. Service was great. Our waiter Israel was very attentive and kept us entertained. Besides the high prices you pay for any top notch steak house, I would recommend this spot for any and everyone."

  • "Have gone to Sly's many times and the food is always delicious and the service always spot on. Love to go there for lunch. Only complaint was we felt rushed, clearing the table before everyone was finished with their food."

  • "The roast lamb under Prix Fixe outstanding, so tender. Super mussels. Delicate and good broth. Fresh rapine, my favorite greens. Good Baseball steak but wasn't baseball round. Rather like a filet and tender, tasty. My guess felt impressed. I felt content."

  • "Chef Sly's restaurant is an Awesome find! 2nd time I have been there, Karissa, our server was Wonderful. Very attentive and not overwhelming. Penny's serving of the Dover Sole was done with exquisite care and showmanship. the Voinier wine was an excellent find. All of Karissa's suggestions for our dinning enjoyment were superb. Chef Sly's staff is Awesome. The Atmosphere and service made our Valentine's dinner most excellent."

  • "We moved to Carpinteria about 8 months ago and Sly's is our 'go to' place in town! So when we had a friend visit us for a few days, we treated her to a nice meal there. Love their burger and their onion rings....what can I say except they are THE BEST!"

  • "We were celebrating a friends decision to begin a new chapter in their life, and Sly's was the place to do it! Friendly staff, great cocktails, excellent menu. The atmosphere was fun and upbeat, casual and relaxed. I had a filet mignon that just melted, and very flavorful. Everyone enjoyed their food choices. I would highly recommend dessert...the coconut cake was light, and a perfect end to a great meal! Enjoy!"

  • "Sly's has an amazing menu with a huge selection. It is my favorite local restaurant. Service is outstanding and the food is wonderful, especially the abalone which you can cut with a fork."

  • "i choose Sly's restaurant because i was informed the chef had moved there from Lucky's restaurant in Montecito and the food lived up to the billing. Since it was my anniversary, I was disappointed by the fascade because it looked for like a tavern from the street but the seating in the rear of resturant met all ambiance standards; plus the service was great. I recommended the dining experience to a amateur gourmet cook friend of mine"

  • "This is the gem of Carpenteria, great atmosphere, fabulous food and exceptional bar drinks. The menu has a daily special, the menu is varied where it will appeal to anybody, meat eater or leaf eater. They feature a special drink menu that has historically famous drinks dating back to the early 1800's, made as they originally were. The preparation of the abalone is the best around and considerably less than the other restaurant in a neighboring community. The wine list will appeal to just about anyone and has a broad range of pricing. The Louie salads are made with a real Louie dressing, not a hybrid Thousand Island dressing. Highly recommended, reservations highly recommended."

  • "I wanted to do something special on Christmas Eve with my spouse (sans relatives and friends) to celebrate the season. I am thrilled to discover a pocket of quality in Sly's after our dining experience. The food was excellent and the service matched - my expectations were met and exceeded. The atmosphere was up-scale without being pretentious. After living in La Jolla for over 18 years I was accustomed to having many choices of great places to dine. I've resided in Ventura for 4.5 years now and finally have discovered Sly's just 30 minutes north...and worth the drive. I will return for future cocktail hours as I love the creative cocktail menu and would like to try a new drink."

  • "Had a great late lunch there,Monday, Dec 30th; party for 3, in the front area, at 3 pm. The mussels provencal -- amazingly good. Fresh oysters the best fresh taste of the year. Super, unique wine list. Super waitress. Good warm bread. 2 kinds. New Year's Eve, 2013, dinner for 3. Same waitress, same superb service. Seated fast with reservation at 7:15. Crowded, noisy, festive. Prix fixed: $35. $55 with wine. Nice calamari salad to start, paella good. Shell fish fresh. Great dessert of Flan with orange sauce-- excellent.. My friends both had lamb which they liked. We were out of there by 9:30 after okay cappuccino. We're spoiled by Lucky Llama coffee place on Carpinteria Ave. But Sly's is fun, and some dishes excellent. None less that good."

  • "We are regulars; everything is always top notch at Sly's; From your greeting at the door by Annie Sly, the wait staff, the fabulous food, a tableside visit by James Sly, the chef owner...it is without a doubt the best overall restaurant in the Montecito, Santa Barbara, Carpinteria area!! The only problem we encounter is trying to make a reservation thru OPEN TABLE!! This not only happens with Sly's, but several other restaurants in the SB area; we often have to call & make our reservations on the phone directly with the restaurant...not receiving the points; but more importantly very frustrating! OPEN TABLE needs to work on it's app!!!!"

  • "I've had several dishes there that proved outstanding and great drinks. To me the food is pricey but so good I can't complain. An entrée of brisket pleased my guest to no end. The spaghetti carbonate knocked me out. that good. A waiter there shook a vodka martini for me to excellence; exactly how I like it, with crystals of ice My salmon hit the spot. I'm going back for the steaks to see if they taste as good and memorable as Holdren's in Santa Barbara. I'm happy with Sly's in Carpinteria. Sophisticated, laid back, wonderful so far. Carpinteria has become so sophisticated and Sly's is responsible for most of that."

  • "I ordered the not so great A Great BLT. The menu doesn't say they toast the bread (they dont give you a choice ) or that it comes with fries (which I don't eat). the only thing that was good was the water and the pasta with pesto that my friend ordered."
    Dined on 12/4/2013
  • "But the food & service are more in line with your family restaurant - food was fresh & of good quality, but no WOW factor, rather bland."
    Dined on 12/6/2013
  • "The atmosphere and staff were great. My steak was cooked as requested. The drinks and wine were excellent. The green peppercorn sauce that came on the steak was really weird. The french fries were not crispy or seasoned well. The cheese plate for dessert was wonderful. I would come to Sly's again to try something else. There are a lot of great things happening there."

  • "Sly's is really two restaurants in one. With reservations (via opentable) my friend and I were seated with in minutes of our reservationi n the back dining room. Exposed brick walls, with vintage racing photo's from the local area, and a view of the wine room provided quite the ambiance. The wait staff was older and very professional. Reminded me more of the East Coast in the city or in Italy, than in a beach town in California. Quite the pleasant experience. I ordered the peppered New York Strip, bake potato (ordered as a side), a moderately priced bottle of wine $55). My friend ordered the daily fish special. The tab was $175 plus tip. So, an excellent meal in nice surroundings. Also, Sly's has free Valet Parking (tip if you want)."

  • "We Like to casual dining atmosphere at Sly's. The food is always, always exceptional. Our server make sure we have everything we want and goes out of his way for that purpose. We enjoy Sly's and wish we could eat there more often."

  • "This place has never failed to wow me. Same is true for the other night. Cocktails were out of this world, great wine at reasonable prices, filet chili and escargot appetizers were incredible, and my girlfriend's salmon was perfect. Even the apple crisp dessert was over the top! HOWEVER, I could not give out 5 stars because a blasphemy occurred during dinner that evening. First, my bone in New York came out VERY medium instead of the medium rare I ordered. Second, when I asked the server what she thought (obviously over cooked for medium rare), she said it looked fine. I will return to give them another chance, but not totally happy with my last visit - they do call themselves a steakhouse so they need to get those right!"

  • "You can always rely on the outstanding food, service & warm reception. SLY'S is our favorite restaurant in the Santa Barbara area, and it is only a 5 minute drive away...can't get any better than that!!"

  • "We go to Sly's about once a quarter. Every single time, it is absolutely excellent. And it's not cheap, so I'm holding it to a high standard. It's a formula that just works. Period."

  • "Sly's had been among our favorite restaurants in the SB area. Last visit Aug 1, a new to us waitress pretty much turned off our affinity towards Slys' to full off , maybe not go back again. The waitress was clearly not interested in her clients but only for clearing out tables. No recommendations from the daily menu, limited drink & wine knowledge, sour puss facial expressions and rushing to get her check. We have previously really enjoyed Sly's because of the genuinely nice staff whether at the bar or a table but this one waitress was able to turn a warm friendly, wonderful food experience into a average food and terrible encounter experience. May not go back, it was that bad."
